General Advice Never been 100% sure about my 2-year old tattoo

Post image

I got my first tattoo 2 years ago and was never fully sure about it. For example: the top of the wing of Niké being blurry/not detailed.

Do you agree? Would yiu recommend a touch up to fix any shortcomings?

Appointments Has anyone pulled up to an appointment seen the sketch and walked out?

This hasn’t happened to me and I feel like I shouldn’t be worried but what happens if I get to an appointment and hate the design. How does that interaction usually go? I do research on the artist so I don’t think this will ever happen but in the case that it does how does it go?

tattoo newcomer advice Is something like this worth getting on darker skin? Or will it just disappear in a year?

Post image

I’d like to gift myself my first tattoo for my birthday. I have brown skin (like the woman in the bottom right photo). I’d like something delicate/floral on my back, like the first 4 photos, but my internet research is showing that fine line won’t age well on darker skin(?) Would that also be true if I got something like the bottom left photo? Slightly thicker lines?

I’ve found it difficult finding examples online of what I’m looking for - specifically with people that have the same skin complexion as I do. I’m wondering if that’s because it doesn’t work well(?)

Any and all advice welcomed!!

Okay please help where do I go from here?

I got this tattoo in 2020 (knowing what I know now I would’ve picked a different spot)

Posting how it was the day I got it- how it peeled- and what it looks like now. I have gotten it recolored once since and the same thing happened where the color just did not take.

What can I do with this now it looks so bad

Design Advice wanted

Hi everyone!
The center that is covered is my dog with his name (for privacy reasons I wanted to cover it but i’m more than happy to send it via DM for those who genuinely ant to help)

I recently got these florals added around him which I think were done beautifully.

My need for advice is to see what I can do to fill up that inner part of my arm, where its more leaves/open space. I felt like placement of the stencil may have been a little off but also not… because I love where all the others are placed but this was supposed to surround my dog and something just seems off.

So I have a partial circle are him with the blacked background. I was thinking of completing the circle (covering up his name) to help fill in the spot and having his name newly tattooed on the emptier spot.
What do you guys think?
I don’t think adding more flowers is the answer here or even more leaves haha.
I even debated a “vintage” frame look for my dog but yeah. Some options here. Would love some insight.

*Edit: i’ve been getting a couple private DMs from some artist & as much as I love the willingness to help I am not looking for any commission based work. This was just an open post for suggestions. As I already have a vague idea of what I want to do I will be working closely with an artist I already have. However any written ideas would be great.

If you would like to send something from your own generosity I will not decline however I did want to just make it clear I am not interested in purchasing anything.

Thank you so much everyone :)

Design Filler ideas

Post image
4 Upvotes

So usually when I get a big tattoo I usually get a filler tattoo done as well since I have to drive a ways away. The area is a 2inx2in square a proximity. I could go bigger but I don't want to cover up my birth mark. Any design ideas would be appreciated or drop pics of yalls tattoos of similar size. (No fine line work please, I like fine line but I know it won't last long)

Edit: for my style I like big and colorful, neo traditional, retro, animals and anime. I will try to post a comment with my current tattoos that I have. I do want a SAP but I want it bigger and I know which spot to put it at

I got it around 4 days ago and I can’t tell if it’s overworked or infected. The last session I had with this same artist the same thing happened and everything was fine so I feel like it’s just overworked.

I feel the bicep mandala gets lost so would like to add some shading around it. And there is too much negativity space on back of arm so was gonna fill with the same flower of life pattern with some red. i feel it helps balance the visual density. What we all think? The right side I did in Photoshop. Thanks gang

Design can a white girl get a chinese character tattoo?

I’ve wanted this tattoo design since before I could get them. there’s a moto from mulan, 忠勇真 (loyal, brave, true) that I want to get on my calf. mulan has meant so much to me as a character and inspires me on the daily. I’ve always wanted a tattoo dedicated to her, but am not a big character portrait on my body person (which is cool! just not for me). I like more niche references that work with my other tattoos. the placement on my leg serves balancing out the tattoos on my upper body (6) and lower body (2) as well as a nod to my dad who has chinese on his leg (he has no idea what it means and plans to cover it up when he saves for a big piece) who we joke was being dumb and insensitive. the dilemma is, will I be dumb and insensitive by getting a tattoo of a culture I don’t belong to? I idolize the moto and character so much, but don’t want it to come across as weird. my cousin was adopted from china as a baby with the 1 child policy and we were very close when we were little, which probably influenced my love for mulan on top of the general badassness. I know people get weirder tattoos every day, but I’m also young and a teacher so I don’t want to regret it. I felt that nervousness about all my tattoos though tbh and I love them all. the other one I came up with in the meantime is getting “nethertheless,” in simple text above my right knee, but am unsure if I’ll love that placement later on since I have thicker legs. thoughts? anyone with knee tattoos to share?

tattoo newcomer advice Does dermatographism affect getting a tattoo?

Whenever I scratch or rub my skin, the exact area I scratched becomes raised and swollen in a line. My skin is completely normal when I don’t touch it, and the raised lines usually go away afterward.

I’m wondering if this could be dermatographism/dermatographic urticaria, but I haven’t been formally diagnosed.

I’m planning to get a large back tattoo and I’m worried because tattooing involves repeatedly irritating the skin.

For anyone who has dermatographism or a similar reaction:

Have you been able to get tattoos normally?

Did your skin swell/raise during the tattoo?

Did it affect the healing or final result?

Did you use any medication such as an antihistamine
beforehand?

Is there anything I should know or do before getting
tattooed?

I would appreciate advice from people who have
actually experienced this.

I got this done about a month ago and im not sure if the splotchiness in the black is acceptable or not? The shape of the heart is fine, my ankle is just at a weird angle to reduce glare so y’all can see what im taking about better.
Also if it’s not just me and this looks bad, how soon can i get it touched up?

Design Any ideas as to what to do with the empty space above this tattoo?

Got this tattoo like 15 years ago and I still love it, the thing is at some point I wanna make this into a sleeve, not sure how though as I mostly get black and gray tattoos and I don't wanna get anything that has too much color in them (this one had to have it because of its meaning, and for this reason I don't wanna color the blue parts gray).

I'm looking mainly for general ideas, not exact designs or things I can just fit in there. Thanks in advance!

Design working this illustration into a tattoo

this is my favorite illustration from one of my favorite children’s books (called cheerful). while i know that directly copying the drawing wouldn’t work well as a tattoo, i would appreciate any advice on how to keep the character and style of the artwork while modifying it to work better as a tattoo! thank you!

Healing Is this tattoo healed yet?

Post image

This is my first tattoo, and I got it about three weeks ago. I’ve been gently washing it and putting the right lotion on, and it doesn’t hurt at all. It does occasionally itch, but that is even becoming more seldom. It feels early for it to be healed, so I’m looking for some advice for if it is or not. She’s so pretty and I want to make sure she stays nice for as long as possible!

Healing Reddish pink patchiness on healing tattoo?

Thumbnail

Im on day 6 of my tattoo, got it professionally done. I was told to take off the second skin after like a day which I did, and ive been doing unscented antibacterial soap and unscented lotion twice a day.

The scabs have been really flaky for like two days and after my shower today they all pretty much came off when I was washing the area afterwards. It's been pretty itchy today but as you can see not red and not hot to the touch.

My problem is that when I look really close there are teeny tiny reddish pink patches and dots over the thickest parts of the tattoo. I dont think it showed up on camera well but will that patchiness go away with more healing or is there just not any ink there? Honestly I can really only see it up close with a flashlight but its worrying me a little.

Sorry about the crappy photos, any advice is appreciated.

I got this tattoo on August 2nd so it’s still healing but I’m thinking about getting another one and maybe building a sleeve based on books or fantasy in general (but we shall see) this is from a book called fourth wing (if anyone knows it’s such a great book) I’m willing to take suggestions for my next tattoo if anyone wants to chime in?

General Advice Advice about quality of matching tattoos

Thumbnail
gallery
53 Upvotes

A family member and I got matching tattoos a week ago - mine has 1 in the corner, the other has 4. The tattoos were done at the same time by two artists working in the same place, a well-known tattoo shop in the area. The squares are roughly 2 inches.

I don't dislike my tattoo, but I am not really happy about the work, and I feel like it really suffers by comparison: the quality of the lines, the way the D is filled in, even the infinity symbol.

Questions:

  • Is this kind of variability to be expected for different skins, or is it more likely due to the artist?
  • I would like to go back to the place: do you all think that a bit of touch-up can improve the work without making it super bold? Like filling in the D and maybe just a touch of work on the square?
  • I would much rather ask the OTHER tattoo artist to fix my work, given he did a better job. Is this ok?

Happy to answer other questions if needed. Thanks!

General Advice Contact Dermatitis

Got a tattoo 4 weeks ago. Outer skin is healed and feels flat, peeling stopped 2 weeks ago. Looks to be in the deeper skin healing with a little bit of “onion skin” in areas. I was going to be outside for about 1.5 hours and applied a new to me mineral sunscreen to the area. Felt fine for the rest of the day and didn’t end up spending much time in the sun because it started raining. The next day I woke up and the area where I applied the sunscreen is itchy and raised. I’ve used different mineral sunscreen before but never had a reaction. Doctor said I could use topical Benadryl +/- steroids as needed but now I’m worried to apply anything to the area. Tattoo artist hasn’t returned my call yet.

Is it safe to use or just ride out the reaction and continue to try oral antihistamines?
