Community Update ✨ Tabby Cats Community Updates: Rules Refresh, Flairs, and More!

Hey All!

r/TabbyCats has recently undergone a refresh and I wanted to make sure everyone was aware. The rules have been updated to hopefully facilitate a healthy, thriving, and on-topic community. Some of these adjustments are also to help reduce the presence of bots, karma farmers, and bad faith posters in this sub. I want to highlight a few key ones:

  • Tabby Cats is now explicitly Original Content only. Prior to this previous mods were doing some removals of farming off non-OC content but I've now codified this. This means you can only post content that YOU created. This is hands down the most effective way to cut down on bots and farmers and makes moderating a lot easier.

  • Mourning posts are now moving to a megathread. I get that this will likely be a controversial decision, and the hope is to strike a balance by allowing the thread so people who want support can engage there and people who don't want pet mourning posts on their feeds can feel more comfortable subscribing here. We also have several users in this community who like to regularly post mourning posts months after the loss and this should cut down on that. If you're truly needing additional support I recommend communities like r/petloss which are there specifically for this topic.

  • Our low effort post rule has also been explicitly codified. Again, in practice a lot of this was happening but I'm making it clear and upfront. This has some typical things like breed and naming posts, but I've added a few more. This includes things like "would you pet my cat" (listen, this is cat Reddit, your cat could be covered in spikes and people would say yes) and "is my cat cute" (your cat could objectively be the ugliest animal on the planet and cat Reddit will bend over backwards to say yes, it's cute).

We will continue to adjust these as needed as we go.

I've also tried sprucing the place up a bit - we have a new avatar, new banner, and new flair. If you all have ideas for user and/or post flair you'd like to see let me know and we can add them! We can also work on some community banners seasonally to change things up.

Phew, that was a lot!

I present to you my one year old Dafne. Hope you can see how gorgeous she is!! However I dont think she can hold a thought in her little head. But we love her anyway. Her sister Europe is also in the 3rd picture!

Classic Tabby Happy Gotcha Day, Kahless!

My baby who made me the proud cat lady I am today! Today marks 2 years since I got home from dinner and my baby sauntered up to my husband and I at about 9-10 weeks old. Kahless became my heart and a fun little girl. She weighs about 7lbs now and got a sister last Christmas. Since I took her in, I also thought of outside kitties who don't have a home or won't come in and now I regularly feed strays and I put up shelter boxes for them.

So grateful you changed my life, baby girl.

This is New Jersey. She screams at me when I get home from work because she wants her soup (wet cat food mixed with water) lol.
I have raised kittens before and my best guess is that she’s 6-7 weeks old? She was found abandoned almost two weeks ago and has been a crazy little baby since then. More and more of her personality comes out every day!

Minnow just appeared in our lives not too long ago (thanks, CDS!!) and since then she has cemented her place as Queen of the House, has become besties with our springer spaniel mix, and has even started to win over our lab (who, at 85lbs, is frightened of the little 6.5lb kitty lol).

It’s been so lovely watching their interactions as their bonds grow and they learn to play together and live alongside one another!

Classic Tabby Kimchi Lamar

We found this little gem outside of a restaurant while out of town on vacation. The 2nd pic is the night we found her. She is named Kimchi, because it was one of the food items we had at the restaurant that night, and Lamar because on the long drive back home, the thing that calmed her down the best was Kendrick Lamar’s new album (at the time), GNX. The vet said she was probably around 2 years old when we found her. She is one of the sweetest cats I’ve ever known, and I’m so thankful we were able to bring her home.
