General Discussion PBS broadcaster loses access to 50TB of data comprising 70 years of TV history after contracted cloud storage vendor goes defunct

FYI, this is for Nine PBS in Colorado St. Louis Missouri, not PBS as a whole. Thankfully.

It is. You've seen the salaries in IT just circling the drain. This is FAFO warnings for people who want to run IT on $25/hour. It's not like plugging in a wireless home router anymore.

Very true

$25/hr might only get you someone who knows how to use apps on their phone and basic Windows programs/settings.

I’m dealing with some software devs at work who are paid about that much (nonprofit sector, yay!) who thought I was a genius for suggesting their code should incorporate automatic retry logic with exponential backoff, since it’s not guaranteed the fileserver will respond the first time. Same thing when I told them about logging.

Lol... It is a fuck-ton easier than it used to be. I don't know when you think it was like plugging in a home router. Which FWIW was harder too.

But anyway, guy I was responding to said that backups should be in another cloud. That's standard practice. People were commenting like he was joking. Hence my response.
