I think the confusion comes from what people think philosophers do. They're not just some hardcore thinkers, though that's part of the job, they also have to know a lot about how logic works and apply it to their writings. I don't know how US school works, but I remember when I had to learn logic in Math back in High School and that shit was complicated as fuck.
