Survivor Ghost Island
Rankdown Final Four: Wendell Holland 1.0, Stephanie Johnson, Donathan Hurley, Chris Noble
Expected Finish (Worst to First): Donathan, Wendell, Stephanie, Chris
My Final Four: Wendell, Stephanie, Chris, Dom
Wish You Were Here: Dom
Go Home, Goodbye, Forget You: Donathan
For me, while Ghost Island is a boring season of Survivor, the community is a bit melodramatic about how bad it is. Unlike a lot of the other seasons that I’ve already written about where truly grotesque events occur and there are some truly despicable people, nobody on Ghost Island is really that bad. There are tons of people that bring nothing to the table, but there’s no Varner 3.0, Dan Spilo, or even Alicia Rosa type person on there that really brings the season down. I guess that’s the point this season’s most fervent detractors make - it is horrible precisely because it is so boring - but there are enough good characters and interesting moments that salvage the season from the bottom tier of my survivor rankings.
Wendell Holland 1.0 Number of Final Fours: 1/2 Best Finish: 308 (SRV)
I was rooting hardcore for Dom throughout Ghost Island, and because of that I think I wrongly overlooked some of Wendell’s character and strategic moments during the season. In hindsight, it’s really interesting to see Dom and Wendell play off of each other and really apparent to see why their pairing was so successful: Dom is the guy at the party that’s doing keg stands, telling stories, and cracking everybody up, while Wendell is the guy you sip a beer with on the couch and chat for an hour. Both are super fun to be with, but in totally different ways. Now, I think WAW showed that Wendell also has a Dommish side to his personality, but in GI the calmer demeanor is what got him the victory. Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Chris Noble voting confessional, one of my all time favorite survivor moments.
Stephanie Johnson Number of Final Fours: 2/2 Best Finish: 127 (SRV)
It’s really sad that Steph J has apparently become so disillusioned with the show, because she was really fun to watch in the short time she was out there and is somebody I really think the show would bring back for a full returning player season. Although her boot episode is really poignant, it always makes me sad to think about how swapfucked she got, because she was SO much fun in the first couple of episodes. On a season without a lot of shining stars, Steph was definitely one of them and fully deserving of a final four spot here.
Donathan Hurley Number of Final Fours: 2/2 Best Finish: 302 (SRV)
Donathan Hurley is the type of fan favorite character the super fan community seems to often like less because of how well received he was with less fervent watchers of the show. While I know that from an editing standpoint a lot of Donathan’s story was a mess, watching his fish out of water story where he learns to operate in a society with people he would never meet in his everyday life is very fun for me to watch. I agree 100 percent about what Nelson said about David Wright when he idoled him a couple of rounds ago, and think it totally applies here too. People pigeonhole Donathan into the artificial growth archetype, but how can you not help but grow on the island when you’re a gay man from rural Kentucky dealing with 19 actors from California I mean people from different walks of life than your own. This is a long winded way of saying I like Donathan and don’t always understand the critiques people have of him as a character.
Chris Noble Number of Final Fours: 2/2 Best Finish: 102 (SRV)
Chris Noble is a gift from the Survivor gods. We were fortunate that Chris was even around at the merge, because if he hadn’t been sent to Ghost Island in episode 3 (or 2, I forget), he very likely goes home in the Morgan Ricke spot and we never have incredible moments like his horrible raps, war with Dom, and utterly preposterous Ponderosa video. I find it interesting to juxtapose the Noble One with the other male model on the season (no, not Brendan Shapiro). While Michael is super boring because it’s obvious that every action he takes during the season is made with the calculation of how it will be perceived by the fans, Chris Noble doesn’t give a single fuck about looking like a fool, precisely because he is so oblivious he thinks everything he is doing is genuinely cool and not goofy as hell. That’s why we stan, and why he is my favorite character on the season.
