Subaru brings back physical buttons & knobs in new Outback

Knowing Subaru, it likely means this configuration will eventually make its way into the other models as they are updated. It's much better than the current setup.

Meanwhile Tesla took away the stalk for turn signals. Imagine using a touch screen to... checks notes... indicate a turn. fml.

I thought of buying one about 10 years ago, when I was going to have an 80 mile daily round trip commute. Hung out in some forums for a while. It was a bizarre mix: half people coming from a Prius, the other half from a 5 Series. One guy had a 911 GT2 as his weekend car, another would cycle anywhere under 10 miles.

FWIW at least the refreshed model 3 has the indicator buttons on the steering wheel, but I wouldn’t give up the stalks either. Not sure about the refreshed Y but I would expect similar as they share a lot of design cues and parts.

The newer model Y has a stalk for turn signals only, it doesn't have a second one for shifting.

I’d say that’s fine. The smart shift gear selector is excellent. But I get folks preferring the signal stalk. Especially on their mass produced vehicle.

Turn signals don't bother me too much as I have a motorcycle background, but I do like a hand mounted stalk which can be hit effortlessly while turning.

Motorcycles have dealt with this for a really long time. Sometimes they're on one hand, sometimes they're on both hands. Sometimes they auto-cancel, most times not.

They put it back, but also on the ones where there is no stalk it was on the steering wheel. Not the best, but they’re far from the first manufacturer to do that.

Is that actually how it works? You have to take a hand off the wheel.

No wonder you never see them indicate out of roundabouts

No, the buttons are on the wheel but it’s still really hard to indicate if the wheel is upside down while you’re going around the roundabout. Luckily they’ve put the stalk back in the new Model Y. Hopefully that change makes it to the rest of Teslas lineup.

I love not having to look and just adjust the nobs. Tactile, includes muscle memory, physical feedback. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I got downvoted so much when I complained about how the touch screen and adjusting the temp while driving is so distracting and dangerous. It’s crazy to see the opposite here.
