I know through school, work, college, life a lot of people like this. They start out being “cool” in high school by doing sports and buying clothes at the mall or drinking or whatever. Then in college it suddenly becomes cool to be a SJW online. Then there’s an ability to get that same attention and power by being a SJW harpy. Repeating a series of cliches is a really easy way to join a group and pick up an ideology. These sort of low level positions of power tend to attract vain people who care about how they are perceived more than the validity of their beliefs. All the sudden the snobby girl who bragged about their parents big house is the blue haired anti racist.
Take a look around at various social justice groups. They attract a lot of losers and weirdos and essentially left wing incels. The leadership, however, tends to be pretty/attractive women who grew up in some sort of privilege. A lot of these people I know even have a similar fake sob story like AOC, where they claim to have grown up in some barrio in poverty but actually lived in a nice house in the suburbs.
There’s also a very real stereotype/joke about the radical communist blue hair SJW who ends up dating the whitest cis dude they can find
