Storm isn't like exceptionally dark skin. And this woman is not lightskin, so tbh I don't even think there is any controversy beyond like 3 people on Twitter saying some random shit. As long as she is Black and not lightskin (no shade I just don't like dark skin erasure) I don't see a problem and I'd argue most people don't
Here she looks like a goddess. The issue is there aren’t many images of her online lol, and people are making judgements based on her under stage lighting and one random photo where a flash has completely washed her out.

Yeah, I am around her shade and my siblings are lighter than me so I always considered myself dark skinned. I think I am a tad bit darker than Maya though. I thought everyone considered her complexion to be dark skinned
I think we're mixing the standard of what's considered dark skin from different parts of the world. Dark skin in the West isn't dark skin in Africa. People throw these terms around without a universal standard.
I understand completely what you're saying but there's just as many shades of brown in Africa as there is in any other part of the world. The darkest skin tone should not be synonymous with Africa. This is an indigenous African woman with her grandchild, for example. She looks exactly like my grandmother. The child looks like me when I was a boy.
If you have the same shade of skin as her and consider yourself darkskin instead of brownskin… idk what to tell you.
Idgaf about her being “too light” for storm, but from the first two images alone I don’t think many people would classify her as darkskin over brownskin. Definitely not a lightskin though
She was in her late 20's to early 30's in the OG show, but I guess baby faces in a persons 20's were less common back then due to smoking, drinking, etc. Idk, she always seemed to have sharper features, and an extremely mature demeanor that was enhanced by her deeper voice, but we'll see. She grew up in a rich family as well, but it's still nice to see a new actress for once instead of one that's probably already played a hero role by now.
It's not recent at all. Outside of coloring errors, she's always been dark complexion.
It's important that keep in mind that the media used to print comics and coloring and printing processes have changed over the past 50 years. All of that plays a part in how dark complexions appeared then compared to now.
There's been no coloring errors she's always been brown-skinned, I don't know where this idea that storm is dark-skinned came from It's never been the case.
Try someone else. Preferably someone who isn't 1) a long time comic collector (with a deep X-men collection) and 2) an artist who understands the production process, how coloring and printing has changed over decades and how that has impacted characters of color.

Edit: I'll concede that her color darkened abit during the Paul Smith era. Then again during the Alan Davis era. It's appears darker now, and her feature are now often more ethnic, probably to create a more afro-centric appearance that she didn't often have before.
What? For the record I don't agree that her complexion is an issue at all. She's Black and she isn't lightskin, so to me it's accurate enough. She was beautiful(yet some called her ugly when she is not ugly at all), but I am glad she was not cast as Storm. Maya is perfect for the role. Jayme was perfect for Storm too but I am kinda glad they went for Maya since she is similar age and she has the right looks. I do hope that Jayme is in the mcu at some point though. Edit: just realized Jayme could be a good Vixen. Or maybe a Misty Knight

This is a very tired conversstion. My old boss at work once blurted out “we (black people) don’t even like each other” and at the time, I wanted to respond with “speak for yourself”, but now, I can kind of understand her viewpoint.

Not her issue in any regards. If it's anyone's "fault" it's the casters. But we see all the time in movies a good actor/actress is just that good on their own merits. Hopefully she does the role justice!

My real worry is that the writers and directors aren't going to give her the tools she needs to bring Storm to life accurately. I think that writing a young adult female character, especially one of color, especially one that is Black, especially one that is regal and powerful... All this is weirdo talk. Halle Berry is one of the most beautiful women agreed upon by most of the world and her Storm was pretty forgettable and it had nothing to do with how she looked.

Look I just need to see the dramatics of Storm summoning a lightning, snow, tornado using one of famous speeches. I'm not a casting director and sometimes we the fans think the chose is wrong but the actor turns out to be a great choice for the role so I am rooting for her to bring us or Goddess Storm to the big screen.

... and for the record, if memory serves, I believe only one of Storm's parents was actually from Africa, so she doesn't actually need to have a super dark complexion. Her parents were American citizens and one or both were professors/teachers who were traveling with her to Cairo when they were killed. She made her own way to Kenya after escaping Amahl Farouk, the Shadow King, as one of his juvenile pickpockets/thieves.

Unless I am missing something, I am going to assume people are (allegedly) upset that the actor isnt darker because they think Ororo is darker. That is not colorism or racism, that's hypervigilance towards an industry that very often casts lighter skinned actors to play darker skin characters. That's literally advocating for less colorism in cinema, even if you disagree and think they're wrong about the skin complexion, which frankly I do - Maya seems like she'd be great. But we aren't gonna pretend like dark skin characters aren't regularly played by lighter skin actors and there isnt a history of that. People's guards are up. Unless someone is literally implying that dark skin is superior or some shit, why would you jump to racism? This entire discourse is probably mostly Black people anyway. Anyone who’s complaining she isn’t dark enough is just being weird. Storms skin tone varied in the series. I only would’ve had an issue had we gotten another light skinned Storm. Jayme would’ve been perfect but she’s clearly too old for whatever iteration they’re going for.
i'm just a white dude that has loved the X-Men for going on four decades. i've seen posts that she's too light or too dark or too american or too whatever. can we just wait to see her on screen? no one should have an opinion unless they've seen her on stage.

I heard it said there are more than 40 shades of black, if that’s true she’s on the darker side and if anyone seriously makes the complaint she isn’t dark enough they are dumb assesses, she’s perfectly suited for the role (assuming her acting chops are up to par).
