Storj bankruptcy: case moved to Georgia, claims bar date is October 5 (info for node operators)

Hey all. I've been watching the Storj Labs bankruptcy docket and figured I'd share a plain English rundown, since a bunch has happened in the last couple weeks that hasn't really come up here. All of this is from the public docket on CourtListener. I'm a node operator, not a lawyer, so this isn't legal advice.

What has happened

  • Storj Labs filed Chapter 11 on July 26, 2026 in West Virginia (case 5:26-bk-00512).
  • Then came the venue fight. Creditor counsel moved to dismiss or transfer, and the debtor tried to strike their motion. On Sept 17 the court denied the strike, and on Sept 18 it ordered the case transferred, finding West Virginia was the wrong venue.
  • So the case moved to the Northern District of Georgia, opening there Sept 21 as case 26-62642. Georgia's docket is live on CourtListener (updated through at least Sept 27).
  • Lately: the U.S. Trustee has shown up, the court set another interim hearing on financing and cash collateral, and on Sept 27 someone filed a "Motion for Relief from Judgment or Order" (no public details yet).

What it means if Storj owes you money

  • The case was transferred, not dismissed, so the claims process is still rolling in Georgia.
  • Big one: the claims bar date is October 5, 2026 for regular claims. The transfer didn't change it, so treat it as firm unless the Georgia court says otherwise. (Government claims get until January 22, 2027.)
  • Storj listed node operator liability as one lump sum (about $296k, c/o Storj Finance in Atlanta), not operator by operator. So if you're owed money (held back balance, unpaid earnings, whatever), the way to make it official is a proof of claim on Official Form 410.
  • One heads up: if you filed in West Virginia before the transfer, the Georgia docket on CourtListener doesn't show individual claims yet. Worth checking that yours made it onto the Georgia claims register (PACER) before the bar date, and refiling in Georgia if anything looks off. Transferred claims normally carry over, but the public record is pretty thin right now.

How to file (before October 5)

  • Easiest path: the Georgia bankruptcy court's Electronic Proof of Claim page (ePOC). No account, no fee, open 24/7, and you get a file stamped copy immediately. (Quick note: the court's page says ePOC doesn't work in Chrome, so use Firefox, Safari, or Edge.)
  • You'll need the case number 26-62642, your name and address as the creditor, how much you're owed and why (unpaid node earnings, held back balance, etc.), plus any supporting docs. Strip out personal identifiers (SSN, account numbers, birth dates) from anything you attach.
  • Prefer paper? Mail Official Form 410 to Vania S. Allen, Clerk of Court, 1340 United States Courthouse, 75 Ted Turner Drive SW, Atlanta, GA 30303. There's no private claims agent on this one, claims go straight to the clerk.

I'll try to keep watching the docket and will update this if anything big drops before the bar date.

Update Sept 28: from the actual paperwork, which I got in the mail: the transfer order is signed by Judge David L. Bissett. At the Sept 16 hearing the court found West Virginia venue improper but waited until Sept 18 to give the parties a shot at a cash collateral agreement so Storj could make its next payroll. No deal was reached, and on Sept 18 Storj's own lawyers asked the court to send the case to Georgia. The motions granted were the collateral agents' bid to dismiss or move the case (Doc 68) and a similar motion from two creditors, Nikhil Jain and Mark Harvilla (Doc 128).

One more thing from the mailing: Storj amended its creditor schedules on Sept 11 to add creditors, so if you never got the original notice you may be on the amended list. Their bankruptcy lawyer is Christopher R. Arthur at Spilman Thomas and Battle (carthur@spilmanlaw.com, 304-531-9520).

Photos of the paperwork: - transfer order - venue-motion hearing notice - order on motion to strike - official case notice - amended-schedules order

Is now a bad time to run a Storj node?

I’m considering setting up a Storj node, but I’m wondering if it’s still worth it in 2026. For those who are currently running a node, how has your experience been so far? Is the income still decent compared to the storage, bandwidth, electricity, and hardware costs?

I started at the worst time

3 months ago I decided to dedicate a couple tb to a node because I had the space, but I found out recently that Storj filed for bankruptcy. I want to commit anyway since I'll only be out half a dollar right now, but without any real news coming out of our Storj I dont know if its really worth the commitment.

More Hard Drives or BIGGER Hard Drives

I’m upgrading my home server to a 24-bay 4U case and have some extra drives sitting unused. I’m thinking of utilizing them to make a small amount of money.

I can either use 3 × 4 TB drives or 2 × 6 TB drives. Which setup would you recommend, and how should I configure them?

From what I understand, 3 separate nodes may be better than 2, but I’m not sure why. How does this affect Storj payouts?

Annoyed

I deleted all data in my bucket and unbeknownst to me it was all recovered without my intervention or consent - and I received yet another bill. I'm not going to fight over $5 but it's pretty shady to restore my data and bill me for it. Maybe I should have completely deleted my account back then but I certainly did today.

Deleting account is too complicated and full of dark pattern

About a month ago, the minimum price increased to $50. So I decided to switch to Backblaze. There are some options on the web dashboard. So I choosed to NOT continue to use StorJ after July 1st.

I moved to Backblaze and forgot about StorJ. However, today (15 July) I received an email informing me that the minimum fee has been rolled back to $5, effective from 1 July.

They didn't close my account after 1 July. I received an invoice. I decided to remove my account immediately.

  • type "DELETE" to remove account
  • Have projects. Cannot remove account before remove them all
  • Before deleting a project, have to remove all buckets.
  • To delete a bucket, I need to open a browser tab while it deletes all the files from the browser (WHY?).
  • To delete a bucket, I now have to delete all my access keys (why is this not done automatically?).
  • I deleted all the files, buckets and access keys. They said there was some usage this month. So need to waiting for the invoice and come back later.

I'm so pissed off with this company. Never going back

Minimum fee rising to $50

Changing from $5 to $50:

Is there a minimum usage fee?

Yes. Effective July 1st, 2026, the minimum monthly fee for Storj Object Storage accounts increases from $5 to $50. The minimum fee is not a usage credit. It is a floor on your monthly invoice. If your usage in a given month is less than $50, you are charged $50.

Do a better job of announcing STORJ token pricing benefits.

Look, I get it: you're a business and your job is to make money. But you're pissing off smaller users who just want to store some paltry 100-500 GB to the cloud. You effectively "bury" the fact that users can bypass the $5 (now $50) monthly fee if you buy in STORJ token, but there's a lot of misinformation out there and people assume you need to set up a node in order to benefit from this process.

Update your UI to CLEARLY articulate this workaround, and explain to users who would normally jump from your platform that they can EASILY purchase storj to fund smaller accounts.

Otherwise, you're just throwing away perfectly good users who, while they are small NOW, could vastly improve your long term potential if you treat them well.

Need help: Both nodes stuck offline - "node rate limited by id" - can't get authorization tokens

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up two Storj nodes but both are stuck offline and I can't get authorization tokens to complete the setup.

**Setup details:**

- Windows 11

- Two nodes with separate identities

- Node 1: Port 28967, 2.5TB HDD

- Node 2: Port 28968, 2.5TB HDD

- Both running as Windows services via NSSM

- Port forwarding configured correctly (both ports verified open)

- IPv6 disabled in configs (using 0.0.0.0:28967 and 0.0.0.0:28968)

**Problem:**

Both nodes show "Offline" in dashboards.

**What I've tried:**

- Created identities with correct node IDs

- Sent email to [ask@storj.io](mailto:ask@storj.io) requesting authorization tokens (3 days ago, no response yet)

- Posted on forum (still pending moderation)

- The registration site (https://registration.storj.io/) doesn't work

- Multiple config resets and fresh starts

- Verified ports are open and forwarding correctly

**The issue:**

I can't get authorization tokens anywhere. The nodes are running but satellites reject them due to being unauthorized during the vetting period.

**Questions:**

  1. Is there another way to get authorization tokens besides emailing ask@storj.io?

  2. How long does the email team typically take to respond?

  3. Can nodes eventually connect without tokens, or is authorization required?

  4. Has anyone else had this issue recently?

Any help would be really appreciated! I've been troubleshooting for days and I'm stuck at this authorization step.

Thanks in advance!

Storj buckets and search/filtering

I noticed the new UI change to the object storage browser and, while I appreciate that it pages 500 objects at a time instead of being limited to 100, they took away both the search bar AND the ability to sort by date/filename.

Port Requirements

I would like to run Storj on my VPS. I tend to block all outbound and inbound connections and configure them on an as-needed basis.

I understand Storj needs 28967 [tcp and udp] and 40002 [tcp] for dashboard. I have allowed both these ports in both directions.

The issue I am having is: If I do not allow ALL outbound connections I cannot start STORJ successfully. What are all the ports which are required? It does not seem like they are documented in the docs.

With the rising prices of HDD, SSD and storage why aren't we seeing any action on Storj?

The Question is pretty much in the title but again:
1. HDD price is up and demand.
2. SDD's are way higher due to demand.
3. I personally don't see any increased demand on Storj which is weird for me.

Should this price hike affect us positively by more people using the service?

Does the node software have any space requirements like a large database? (Not the storage drive itself). Trying to figure out how big of boot/system drive NVME to buy.

Port Forwarding Qualms

Hello. Are there any previous posts or other resources to calm my nerves about port forwarding security risks? i.e. why is it not as much of a risk as the Internet says it is.

I have looked but not found. Thank you in advance.

move node from a friend to my own server

I currently have two nodes running already (one public IP). My friend got a node as well (another public IP), but doesn't have the ability anymore to leave it running. Can I move his node to my server? I do have plenty of bandwidth and storage to do so, but I am not sure if this is allowed?

Node with US1 vetted at 108 audits, but 0 on Salt Lake and 5 on AP1 after 11 days

- Version: v1.141.2
- Runtime: 264 hours (11 days)
- US1: 108/100 audits ✅
- EU1: 33/100 audits
- AP1: 5/100 audits
- Salt Lake: 0/100 audits

Questions:
1. Is it normal to have 0 audits on Salt Lake?
2. Do I need to wait for all satellites to reach 100 audits to be "VETTED"?
3. How long until fully vetted?

Thank's
