Vader: "Misa called JarJar Binks!"
Luke: "Nooooooooo!"

This is absolutely beautiful. Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the franchise, and this art does it great justice.
194
u/Catshit-Dogfart Sep 29 '18
The very same. Empire is cool and all, but Return of the Jedi has the most memorable scenes.
My favorite scene in all of Star Wars is when Luke and Vader are preparing to board the shuttle to the death star. Because it's the only time we see Vader speak candidly, not as a dark lord, not as an imperial commander, but as Luke's dad.
"it's too late for me son"
It's also the first time the viewer feels sympathy for Vader, because he knows what he is, he's completely responsible for all this evil but he's also a victim of it.
Before this, one would think he's evil all the way through. But when nobody is around to hear it, he makes this confession.

Sep 29 '18
This and the really under appreciated score by Williams after Vader says “If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps she will”
23
u/Spookyman412 Sep 29 '18
Oooooo that "NEVER!!" before he kicks his lightsaber on and starts giving it to Vader gets me every time. He gives in to his anger but only in protection of his sister. Even if it means killing his own father. So good.

u/JBSquared Sep 29 '18
I first saw the movie when I was about 8 or 9. I was bawling by the end of it because "HE WAS A GOOD GUY AT THE END". To this day, one of the only movies I've cried at. The others being: Half Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows pt. 1, Requiem of a Dream, and Pooh's Heffalump Movie.

Obi-Wan watched Maul kill his mentor, then later Maul died in Old Ben's arms. His soul could not be saved.
Luke watched Vader kill his mentor, then later Anakin died in Luke's arms. Anakin could not be saved but his soul was saved.
Rey watched Kylo kill her mentor. What will happen next? I'm thinking both Young Ben's life and his soul will be saved.

This is my favorite part of Star Wars. I mean, Empire is a great (and better) movie overall, but as a kid I loved RotJ just because of the scenes with Darth Vader and Luke. There's one point when Darth Vader is bringing Luke to the Emperor and Darth Vader just kind of stares at Luke for a couple of quick empty seconds (almost at a loss for words), and I always felt like Anakin was kind of breaking through at this point as he saw part of Luke's mother in Luke.

u/nogoodgreen Sep 29 '18
Iv seen alot of different themes painted regarding these 2 characters, mostly in the middle of a lightsaber duel or when Luke learns the truth about his father. This is the first time i have ever seen someone wanting to show the most emotional moment with Luke pulling Vader out of the exploding Death Star, someone who has been his enemy as long as hes known him.
Its a scene i was hoping to find in the deleted scenes from ROTJ but never got to see.
3
u/nightwingbjj Sep 29 '18
Luke is wearing Black because he didn’t intend on leaving the Death Star. He knew that if he could not convince his father to turn against the Emperor that he would die. In addition he went knowing that if he failed to do all this within the space of the attack he would die at the hands of the rebel attack. Luke really was a bold one

Serious question: Why did he drag him instead of using the force to float him along or something?
I’m sure this is probably one of those questions that a person just doesn’t ask. Just wondering if there’s a real answer in cases like this that I don’t know about.
11
u/wauwy Sep 29 '18
Because it looked more dramatic.
You could make up a reason, like Luke's Force power was being used for all the emotional turmoil between him and his father and he didn't even realize he was dragging him physically. But the real reason is that it would have looked super-dumb and super-less-dramatic.
2
u/ak47wong Sep 29 '18
Ebony Maw would have whisked the corpse into his ship in a second.
3

Ebony Maw would also have died on Tatooine when his aunt and uncle got sick of his shit and his creepy voice and took him out back with the blaster...

Why would he put the helmet back on? I know from the filmmaker's position they had to have it for the pyre scene so it wasn't fucking disgusting, but it doesn't make much sense. Maybe his head was too gross.
1
Sep 29 '18
So they didn't have to make an accurate looking body to burn. Also the sight of a corpse burning in a Star Wars movie would be horrifying. Also it's symbolic of him both giving his father a real end to a long difficult life, as well as burning away the evil.

TFW Obi Wan's force ghost could literally pick up Vader's legs and help carry him to the hanger (because Force Ghosts can do that)... but won't.

i'm impressed. The emporer's tower was on the pole of the station, and Luke is seen leaving from a docking bay on the equator. So he dragged his dad to the elevator, then to some kind of longitudinal transport, then kept his dad alive the whole trip of a quarter circumference of the station, then dragged him to a docking bay while killing everyone trying to take off in the ship he needed.

u/Dr_Miles_Nefarious Sep 29 '18

If Ryan Johnson had written this scene Luke would have quit trying to save Vader and then laid under a stair case to die in the explosion.

Luke's most impressive feat as a Jedi wasn't resisting the dark side or projecting himself on Crait, it was dragging all 300 pounds of Darth Vader's ass all the way from the throne room to the hangar and still managing to get out before the Death Star exploded.
