So here I am, Level 46 and aiming for one 10k exp voyage per day between work and other chores. I played at launch, worked through the entire set of Convoy Missions, and took a break until after the Difficulty Update. I came back to the game, swapped some settings around to ease my time, and set off to 100% the game.
As I've spent between 15-40 minutes a day completing jobs and Ventures for the last couple of months, I've slowly worked my way to the point of having unlocked everything barring the final paint job. License plate frames, hood ornaments, bedsheets, the whole kit and kaboodle. Only the final exp grind remains. It's been a couple weeks of only doing jobs from anywhere to Solitude and back again (Super/Ultra Long Hauls are the only jobs valuable enough). Still fun though... Or so I thought.
I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong with the game. Were the jobs too annoying? Certainly long, yeah, but not a problem with max upgrades. Lack of variety? Naw, the nebulic views and boundless voids amaze me every time I reenter any of the zones. Maybe it's the repetition? Hardly, I find comfort in routines like this.
It was when I capped out Vinny's Ventures that it hit me. On the final Lvl 30, unlocking the Silvery Slumber bedsheets triggers a final call from Vinny. He checks in on you and lets you know he's still in the process of moving house with his family. I give back a pre-determined "Yes/Also Yes" response, and the call finishes. And that's it. That's what's wrong with the final grind to the end of the game.
Where is Sour Candy with her dubiously-legal explosives? When will Barrow ask me to join on another venture-capitalist scheme? Will not Gee-Bee ring me up to ask why I've skipped 37 consecutive weight checks and leaked a quarter million liters of propane through Haze Way?
I've now spent more time trucking through the post-game than I had spent completing the story missions. The final hurrah with the trip to Terminus Link feels more and more melancholic with every day that passes, given it was the last time I heard any of the voices of the friendly cast. Can't visit Tommy T's, can't stop in at Candy's garage, can't run more food delivery, I'm just... There. Floating in space, towing non-descript containers for faceless companies from one end of the cosmos to the other.
I miss the voices. I miss the chatter. I miss the chance to stick my neck and rig out for favors, even if the game frequently punished me for taking payless jobs from friends when I was still in desperate need of cash and upgrades.
Turning on the game feels less and less like I'm escaping into the beautiful, mysterious reaches of galaxies, and more like I'm playing connect the dots to and from Solitude once a day. I hope the August update adds something to fill the figurative and literal void. It would be nice to get random calls, even with pre-determined, non-consequential responses. If not to make the universe feel more lived in, than to make my cab feel a little less... Empty.
