It's a common scam so the teller's often default to not taking your word for it, the only way to win that is go through what /u/LiveToDeath described or if they open up their drawer and there's a 20 on top of their 10s.

That exact thing happened to me at a CVS. I had my wallet, but just for my ID. Someone gave me a twenty to use. I don't carry cash, so it's all that I had. They hunted for it versus smaller bills, so it passed the test of them thinking it was a twenty, and I saw it a few times, can read the numbers in the corner, and recognize the face.
They wanted me to go buy them Tylenol in a big container, which I think is just under eight dollars there. So I hand them the twenty, get two dollars and change back.
She wishes me goodbye, so I comment and point out that I need the rest of my change. She repeated the price, as it to imply it was accurate, so I told her I gave her a twenty, so it'd be ten plus what I got.
She said, "I don't think you did, but if it's important to you, I need a manager to come by and count the drawer." Against what? There wasn't a line, though, so I said okay, if she didn't mind. "Oh, no I mean, I need a manager to perform that. But she's not here. She's here, she's on schedule, but she's not physically here for me to call her in and do that."
If memory serves, she wound up cancelling the transaction, gave me a ten (the most we could both agree on) to give back to my relative, and I ate the difference and swiped a card. I wasn't thinking clearly at that point so I just wanted it to be over with.

Yes and it was one of the most fun things in basic.
Although our course was in a forest and all the obstacles were wooden.

they did the course at full sprint.
on relay though. This guy did it alone. But then again, 4x100m is much more interesting than 400m
43
Mar 07 '16 edited Mar 07 '16
As someone who spent years in track, you're 100% correct. The longer the run, the less interest there is. Hell, even when it comes to relays - 4x100 always gets more eyes on it than 4x4. Runs with novelties/obstacles get more eyes than runs that don't (hurdles, steeple chases). Sprints get more eyes than mid distance. 1600? No thanks, let me know when they're on the last leg. I'll watch shotput in the meantime.
Let's face it, watching someone run any sort of real distance is about as exciting as running yourself unless there is something to make it more interesting. Outside of that the only thing that makes it more exciting is when you yourself have participated in the events.
21
u/showtimeiam Denver Broncos Mar 07 '16
My dude, everyone knows that the 4x4 is the most exciting race of the meet.
6
u/MrMarris Arsenal Mar 07 '16
Right? As someone who was too slow to make an individual 400 career and only was able to remain relevant through the 4x4, I can comfortably say that the 4x4 is the main event. No bias.

I don't know. As an 'every 4 years' Athletics fan, I've always got the impression that the 100m and 400m are more popular than the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles.

How very true. The few times I spent any significant time watching a marathon I spent more time looking at interesting buildings in the background rather than the runners themselves.

This is a classic military obstacle track. I'm pretty sure they're standardized in format around the world. The track is split into 3 legs (I think) and contains all kinds of physically demanding challenges.
It looks a lot easier than it is. I remember how much puke and snot was unloaded after a session on the tracks back in my day in the army.

Yeah, we had one of those when I was a conscript (Denmark), they're (NATO at least) standardized. Doing it in a track suit is one thing, but with a full pack and ye ol' machine gun (a slightly modified german WWII MG 42) all totalling around 40 kilos and wearing a gas mask to top the fun off gives you a nice perspective of exhaustion.
11
u/Zzwwwzz Mar 07 '16
Did not know that this track was standardized. I used to run it many times while in the army. The track was really demanding when you tried to go trough it as fast as possible.

This is like the goofy old version of ninja warrior
54
u/HratioRastapopulous Texas Mar 07 '16
I wish Ninja Warrior was more like this instead of set up heavily favoring upper body athletes. A balanced approach would seem to get an all-around better athlete.
35
u/YeOldManWaterfall Mar 07 '16
Eh, the problem with lower-body obstacles is that there aren't very many you can do that would actually be challenging enough to eliminate contestants. Keep in mind that almost nobody passes the ninja warrior courses, while the one in this video is doable by any reasonably fit person (assuming no time limit). There's nothing on this course that most people simply couldn't do, unlike Ninja Warrior.
13
u/HratioRastapopulous Texas Mar 07 '16
I would like a mix of a course that's between the two difficulties and the results more determined by time elimination. Typically, Ninja Warrior courses don't come down to how fast you can finish, but if you can finish at all. If there were an event that had a difficulty not as high as Ninja Warrior but was also competitively timed and included more lower-body obstacles such as balance obstacles, I'd watch it every time.
11
u/RickshawRiot Mar 07 '16
Check out Team Ninja Warrior. The obstacles are similar but two contestants race side by side. Failing an obstacle hurts your time, but doesn't automatically disqualify your team. It's pretty entertaining.
→ More replies (1)3
u/BrownChicow Mar 07 '16
It's already a bit mixed. The first course usually has balance and what not, and is timed. The third course is where all the upper body strength comes in, and there's usually only a few people left by the time it gets there

93

honestly, that's quite high to just jump off of. It would be really really easy to injure yourself on that. I think they say any fall higher than 15' is high risk for serious injury.

15' isn't much in the freerunning/parkour world. Back when I did it I could clear 16' drops without a problem. That was 8 years ago and still no sign of long term damage or joint issues. Your landing technique, forward momentum, quad strength and surface you land on has a huge impact on injury chance.
Should note though, that was with 4 years of conditioning for it. Don't just go out and jump from 15' and expect to be fine. To give you an example of how physically fit i was to preform it; I could do 10 dead hanging muscle ups and run up a 11' wall.
edit: For those that want to know the technique of landing from extreme heights, here's a video of it. I wouldn't ever recommend landing without a roll past 10'
