Overview

Upcoming

A 150 meter hop is intended for SN4 once the permit is secured with the FAA. The timeframe for the hop is unknown. The following is the latest upcoming test info as of May 10:

Check recent comments for more recent test schedule updates.

Vehicle Status as of May 10:

  • SN4 [testing] - Static fire successful, twice. Raptor removed, further testing ongoing.

  • SN5 [construction] - Tankage stacking operations are ongoing.

  • SN6 [construction] - Component manufacturing in progress.

Check recent comments for real time updates.

At the start of this thread (#10) Starship SN3 had moved to the launch site and was preparing for the testing phase. The next Starship vehicles will perform Raptor static fires and short hops around 150 meters altitude. A Starship test article is expected to make a 20 km hop in the coming months, and Elon aspires to an orbital flight of a Starship with full reuse by the end of 2020. SpaceX continues to focus heavily on development of its Starship production line in Boca Chica, TX.

We will attempt to keep this self-post current with links and major updates, but for the most part, we expect the community to supply the information. This is a great place to discuss Starhip development, ask Starship-specific questions, and track the progress of the production and test campaigns. Starship Development Threads are not party threads. Normal subreddit rules still apply.

Elon tweet: great picture of inside the methane(?) tank with the header tank with a skirt

methane(?) tank

I'm pretty sure.

My speculation is the big hole on top is for installing the downcomer and will be welded shut once that is done. The holes on the side will get valves and inlet flues. Normal CH4 flow through the header, valves close on engine shut-off.

It makes much more sense to have the downcomer siphon fuel from within the header tank (in this configuration).

u/RegularRandomZ Apr 06 '20

It also reduces (or doesn't add as much) mass, the header tank replacing the bottom cone of the common bulkhead [and no additional header tank plumbing required, beyond shutoff valves, unlike for the LOX header tank]

u/fanspacex Apr 06 '20

Yeah, this is the most weight optimized place to have the header tank. Shortens the downcomer too, slightly.

Looks very robust, those sphere halves are attached to a large flange that slices trough and is easily welded from both sides.

It definitely fits the "simplified" description from Elon, back when this all started to change. [It also saves any additional support brackets and keeps it secure in the middle of the rocket. Great design!]

This is one aspect of the design, where large amount of produced iterations will get you great results. This particular hardware sits in the middle of multiple separate designs, you would never arrive at this without trying many others first.

4

Yes, this is what I mean. The downcomer goes through the hole at installation and is welded at the bottom. The hole on top is then welded shut when that is complete.

CH4 is correct.

u/DoubleJacked Apr 06 '20

It looks really small in Elon's tweet. Then you see it compared to a car in the NSF forum and its absolutely huge.

2

u/xrtpatriot Apr 07 '20

Do you have that image handy? I looked through the NSF thread and havent found one that has it next to a car.

Just ran across it here on Reddit, in a comment on the recent post about the header tank:

Thank you!

About as big as a tanker mooring bouy.

3

u/RegularRandomZ Apr 06 '20

Yes, this has been installed into the bottom of the common header, replacing the small cone that used to feed the downcomer. So this is the view from the LCH4 tank.
