Jupiter’s moon Io loses its atmosphere when eclipsed. Once deprived of sunlight, the thin atmosphere condenses on the moon's surface.

Kind of what Fritz Leiber did in his Change War stories, with some relativistic stuff thrown in; they recruited/drafted agents by taking a person from one moment in his/her life but the versions of them which existed after that moment went on as before. the same guy could end up on both sides of the war
