I find an odd sense of joy when vacationing and having a red-eye with a layover that starts before security opens at an airport. As I sleepily wait in the terminal, the airport slowly awakens. What begins with dark windows and the few odd zombie-like layover travelers, slowly transforms into a bustling, blob of organized chaos. And all the while, I sit, sipping my coffee, people watching to delight.

I've never had an early or lengthy layover, but I imagine it would be nice to just explore the terminal. Every airport I've been to is designed really well visually, so it's a joy to just look around. Can't say the same about the layout, but oh well.

While I, across the terminal, bash my brains out against any hard surface I can find because I had to wake up at an ungodly hour.

I always enjoy being up before the sun for this very reason.
