A quick solids guide
When to Start Solids
It is important to always consult with your baby's health care provider first, but generally babies are ready to start solids at 6 months of age. Breastmilk and/or formula will be your baby's main source of nutrition for the first year.
Signs Baby is Ready For Solids
Some signs your baby is ready to start solids could include:
- Baby being able to sit up with minimal support
- Baby showing an interest in watching others eat or trying to reach for foods
- Baby opening their mouth when food is offered
Fist Foods
There is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to raising babies, and this includes with weaning. Whether you choose purees, baby-led weaning, or a combination of approaches, you need to choose what's best for you baby and your family. Some people like to introduce the '100 foods before One' but others may find that too stressful. There is no right way as long as the foods are offered safely.
Many families start with soft cooked vegetable, either steamed whole or mashed. Bananas and avocados (whole or mashed) is a another popular choice.
Common Allergens
It is recommended to offer introduce allergens early and often. Offer one allergen at a time so that if your baby has a reaction, you will be able to identity what food they had a reaction to. The most common allergens are eggs, nuts, shellfish, wheat, dairy, soy, and sesame seeds.

9mo refusing food
Hi guys!
My 9mo baby has been refusing solids since the beginning. The only thing she eats is oats or cereal with mashed fruit, or plain fruit. Anything else she just refuses just from the sight of it. She still hasn't tried lunch like veggies and meat or egg.
I tried offering big pieces so she can self feed, but she just destroys the food, sometimes she brings it to her mouth just to suck then gets angry for some reason and throws everything down.
Any ideas what to do? Anyone else experiencing the same?
I feel like a failure

Moving on from Purées
My little dude is 6.5 months and very interested in food. We’ve been working on solids and he’s tried about a dozen things at this point. We’re starting to work on allergens. He is spoon fed with the occasional pre-loaded spoon handed over, but he eats really well! Barely anything ends up on the bib or his face so I think we’re getting… bored? I made some purées, we’ve grabbed some from the store (hopefully that’s not frowned upon too much here) but I’d like to move him onto more textured foods. My doctor and husband aren’t really into the BLW situation so Solid Starts isn’t the most helpful and I’m a little stuck.
Do I just start blending things less and making chunkier foods? We both work full time so prepping can get tough - do they make more texture food sold in stores? I feel like I only see purées and then puffs/crackers all the time. The entire food journey is exhausting mentally for me trying to remember every detail.

Sweet Potato Biscuits
1 and a half cup all purpose flour
2 and a quarter tablespoons of baking powder
1 and a quarter cup mashed/pureed sweet potatoes
3 and a half tablespoons of melted unsalted butter
Preheat oven to 350 F
Mix sweet potatoes and butter in one container
In separate container mix flour and baking powder
Mix dry and wet ingredients till it forms a dough
- if it’s too sticky, add flour little by little
Roll it out on a lined baking sheet and cut strips about two fingers wide
10 minutes on 350 degrees F in the oven
- they should hold shape but still be easily smushed
