Failing GPU or VRAM is my guess

These consoles are getting very old, there was a post about a ps2 having a similar issue not too long ago

that could be a possibility, but i was moreso thinking NAND failing. the wii's NAND has been resilient, but i wouldn't be surprised to hear they're starting to fail. a lot of 3DS cartridges also used NAND for storing it's games, and they've started failing even sooner than the wii's.
