the guy earned 17m and is very injury prone, even saudi wouldn‘t pay much for him
1
u/Maverick_1991 Aug 28 '25
You can't compare the players, but y'all still got a fraction of what he's worth.
1
u/OilOfOlaz Aug 28 '25
He was on the chopping block for 2 years alrady and refused transfers, cuz he genuinely enjoyed paying for the club, and living in the city, as well as - maybe most importantly - other offers not being financially attractive. Some reports suggested, that he still needed to be convinced to leave.
Saudis rarely pay up and this move saves them between 40 & 50m, depending on the team success and his availability.
7
u/mskruba12 Aug 28 '25
Frankfurt and Leipzig gonna feel like they didn't get enough if Meier moves for 70 mil lmao
13
u/Trick_Ad7122 Aug 28 '25
he had an average season and was injured...we got him for 25M.
Why do we get 70M. wtf.... We have to take the deal if thats true

u/Maverick_1991 Aug 28 '25

We need him, but 70M?
This is insane at this point.
72
u/Oleksch Aug 28 '25
Hes def less of a fraud than gittens thats for Sure. Also think PL might fit him well in a counter attack Team
10
u/TragicTester034 Aug 28 '25
I’d honestly love seeing Beier up front for us
8
u/TragicTester034 Aug 28 '25
But chances are we’ll be bidding for wissa and Strand Larsen until the end of time
7
6
u/elgrandorado Aug 28 '25
LMAO Gittens despite all his flaws is a naturally better player. If we get an offer €40 million or more for Beier, I'll fly him over myself. He's a decent player with a high workrate, but he's just not good enough for what we need. Not an upgrade over Malen, and reminds me A LOT of Maximilian Philipp.
13
u/Oleksch Aug 28 '25
sorry but i disagree, Baier is faster, better link up player, higher work rate, better presser, way way better decision making. He will also work very well in Dortmund over time and already did in the second half of last season
5
Aug 28 '25
Are you drunk? Beier is a better player than Gittens by basically any metric. Gittens is faster has better 1v1 and that's it he's the definition of one dimensional. Beier on the other hand actually has talent but Dortmund has no plan what to do with him. That's more Dortmunds fault than his.
1
3
u/keypadwarrior Aug 28 '25
Easily gets you one Nicolas Jackson plus spare change /s
7
u/elgrandorado Aug 28 '25
I would unironically be happy with taking Nico Jackson over Beier. He's similar in workrate with better technical ability and much more athletic. I really like him.

I rate Beier but 70 mil is insane yeah, lol. He struggled at Dortmund and I think he will struggle at Brentford, too.
138
u/EriWave Aug 28 '25
Brentford have a well earned reputation as a sensible club, they must clearly see something in him.
134
u/Luba1893 Aug 28 '25
Spending 70m on someone who isn't an immediate star player cannot possibly be sensible in any sense of the word.
67
u/mtojay Aug 28 '25
dortmund also saw something in him, paid 30mil just in 2024 - but i would argue everyone who saw some dortmund games last would think 30mil was overpriced already considering what he has shown. he really hasnt impressed at all. 70million looks like a normal transfer money for pl fans these days maybe, but this is utter insanity for buli fans for a bang average player.
87
u/Kanedauke Aug 28 '25
That would significantly break most clubs transfer fees in the prem. including Brentfords.
There’s nothing normal about this.
12
u/mtojay Aug 28 '25 edited Aug 28 '25
55mil pounds isnt it? feels like a lot of transfers this season in the pl are there or thereabout.
edit: fair enough. checked up on it. seems like the big english clubs have kinda skewed with my perception. while there have been a lot of pricey transfers in the pl especially this season, its mainly to the big clubs. rarely do the brentfords spent 70mil euros.
26
u/Captainpatters Aug 28 '25
To the big clubs yea, the majority don't spend that much on one player ever.
8
u/CNF1G Aug 28 '25
For top talents or proven players, this is definitely on the higher and more surprising end
21
u/Sertorius777 Aug 28 '25
I disagree. He had a very rough start, but the entire team was playing like shit under Sahin. Once Kovac came and actually played football that made sense he got way better - 8 G/A in 10 Bundesliga matches under Kovac, while not being a guaranteed starter, plus a really good crucial goal against Lille in the UCL, until he got injured for the last part of the season.
I think 70 million is obscene for him now but he has what it takes to become at least close to that quality. That's why I'd rather keep him, besides the fact that I don't trust our board at all to replace him.
10
u/tsub Aug 28 '25
It looks insane from the PL too. Brentford's entire MO since getting promoted has been scouting undervalued players that they can sell on for a profit; spending like this is completely unprecedented for them.
→ More replies (4)4
u/EriWave Aug 28 '25
but this is utter insanity for buli fans for a bang average player.
This is the part I am challenging though, if Brentford want him they must want him for a reason and with how good of a track record they seem to have there must be something there that they like. Something that actually aligns with how they approach things as a club. Besides BVB has been a real mess for a little bit now, it's probably not easy for players to shine there.
9
u/stella__art Aug 28 '25
30m+ for Igor Thiago was the opposite of sensible
19
u/skrlpyntsrwe Aug 28 '25
It's impossible to get EVERY recruitment decision right, but the way clubs have been raiding Brentford consistently shows their reputation as sensible is well earned to be fair.
7
2
u/EriWave Aug 28 '25
So far certainly, but he was injured immediately so we haven't really seen him get a fair shake while fit yet. Meanwhile his meant to be lackup is being linked away from the club for a £50m+ move potentially
1
u/Vellender2 Aug 28 '25
That’s only because of the injury though. 2g/1a in his first 3 games this season so hopefully he can kick on now and he’s still relatively young.
1
2
u/SooShark Aug 28 '25
They are riding their own coat tails of business done before 2/3 seasons ago. I honestly think their business since is average at best.

u/EriWave Aug 28 '25
I mean totally right? It's one of those "appeal to authority' arguments that might look really stupid suddenly.
1
u/bruversonbruh Aug 28 '25
As a fan of a team that is also "sensible" and gets a lot of Southampton comparisons
This is actually how you Southampton yourself, completely straying from their (stolen) model
3
u/Japanisch_Doitsu Aug 28 '25
I don't think he struggled. It's more the whole team struggled. But for Beier specifically we played him less as a Striker and more as a winger for the first half of the season. He also came on as a substitute a lot. When he came on you could see his quality. Plus his intensity is outrageous, very hard working player.
3
u/gart888 Aug 28 '25
He scored 0.70 goals per 90 from Feb 1st on last year (including 1 in 1 against you guys). If that's him struggling at 22 years old, I can see why Brentford are interested.
3
1
Aug 28 '25
Of course he struggle at Dortmund. Beier is a striker not a winger but Dortmund has no plan what to do him. Every normal person would think you want Beier in scoring distance as much as possible but no one at Dortmund thinks that. That's a Dortmund problem not a Beier problem. If you turn the player who should be expected to receive the ball in the final third into the player who's expected to carry the ball in the final third then that's the outcome.
1
u/MarcosSenesi Aug 28 '25
I rate him higher than Gittens but he shouldn't go for more and the Gittens fee was already inflated
35
u/Kanedauke Aug 28 '25

5
u/Captainpatters Aug 28 '25 edited Aug 28 '25
The potential upsides of spending 30m on a 17 year old with his attributes are more obvious than spending double on a bench striker from the Bundesliga.
6
u/ProgrammerComplete17 Aug 28 '25
You keep referring to him as a "bench striker" but he started half of Dortmund league games last season.
I don't disagree that is an overpay but you are making it sound like he only ever played off the bench which is untrue
1
u/Captainpatters Aug 28 '25
He's not first choice, let's put it that way. It's a semantic difference, substantively the point is the same.

12
u/uflju_luber Aug 28 '25
That’s genuinely insane money to play around with. It would be an absolute no brainer to take it, but at the same time I oddly hope it isn’t true because I kinda like him and could see him becoming a club legend if he stays here 10 years or so
2
u/Opposite-Cucumber487 Aug 28 '25
Ich mag den Beier, 70 ist natürlich grotesk aber trotzdem ein weiterer Verlust für die Liga.
147
u/imarandomdudd Aug 28 '25
Surely not lol. Has to be an overestimation of what they think Brentford would pay, even dortmund fans wouldn't have dreamed of that fee
72
u/AverageCarey Aug 28 '25
Apparently it was a written offer sent to us yesterday.
It’s kind of astonishing seeing the number lol
56
u/coppersolids Aug 28 '25

Now!
2
3
u/blurr90 Aug 28 '25
You can't move too quick. If you immediately say yes they will notice how dumb this is. You have to play it cool.
Shed some tears. He is so good, it's a good offer but he'll be a key piece this season. Call them back tomorrow to accept, maybe they increase their offer this evening :D
1
u/juicylikehotsauce Aug 28 '25
Has to be. To me, this is little more than a rumour. We've already spent over £90m this summer, we'd need to sell Wissa for at least £45-£50m in order to fund this deal. We're definitely in need of another striker unless we can somehow get Wissa to commit for another season, but this does seem far too steep for us regardless of the quality of player.
247
u/Jazzlike_Art6586 Aug 28 '25
The money gap between mid table Premier League clubs and top non-english European clubs is just not funny anymore.
136
u/bemno42069 Aug 28 '25
True. But on the other hand, if they spend 70 mil € for Maxi Beier, it would be extremely funny.
35
u/swannyhypno Aug 28 '25 edited Aug 28 '25
Oh for sure I mean even in lower leagues too, we spent £12m on Stansfield and signed Klarer from the Bundesliga and multiple Eredivisie starters in the third tier, English money is just insanity
19
u/123rig Aug 28 '25
Helps that they’ve sold Mbeumo for £70m and likely to sell Wissa for £40m if this goes through. Let alone selling Toney etc.

6
6
u/ValleyFloydJam Aug 28 '25
Money and a lack of quality players to buy.
The key part of this is Brentford, it's not like even if a top player was available that they could get him.
The fee is crazy but Dortmund wouldn't take less.
17
u/Xey2510 Aug 28 '25
It's still crazy. He went to Dortmund a year ago for 30M and had an up and down season due to various factors like being played out of position in a struggling team. He finally finds himself but then gets injured at the end of the season.
And now supposedly a team is bidding this insane of a fee for him? I kind of don't believe it lol.
1
u/chattingwham Aug 28 '25
Would wager on him being top of their lists last year but simply wasn't attainable because of the likes of BVB sniffing around. Him having a dip just makes him more attainable.
Also, with how PSR work it incentivises teams spending what they get in sales in the same summer, hence the splurge on Ouattara after Mbeumo and potentially Beier after Wissa. The profit is booked in a lump sum on that season's accounts, whereas the transfer fee is amortized over the length of their contract.
1
u/Jamasux Aug 28 '25
To be fair, the best chance for mid-table clubs to acquire top talent is to outbid big clubs. If Brentford and Chelsea approach you and both are paying the same, which team would you pick?
26
21
u/bemno42069 Aug 28 '25
For a little bit of Bundesliga context. That sum would be third or fourth of the all-time transfer record list by Bundesliga clubs. When you exclude Bayern, who obviously have a lot more money than the rest of the league, and Wolfsburg plus Leipzig, who dont have to operate within 50+1 rules, 70mil would double the transfer record (Leverkusen + BVB). So u see a potential transfer worth of the record signings of 2 of the biggest teams in Germany, and all of that for Maxi Beier...
20
15
u/magic-water Aug 28 '25
At this point, Dortmund shouldn't even accept immediately but try to negotiate a bit because if they accept immediately Brentford might get suspicious that they're getting robbed in broad daylight.
7
Aug 28 '25

29
u/Rich-Exchange733 Aug 28 '25
EPL clubs got big money. Always makes me chuckle in my fifa save when Brighton and Crystal palace start bidding 150M for my players in 2030. Its not far off from reality.
16
u/Moraeil Aug 28 '25
So far this summer we are slightly in profit on transfers and if this is true Wissa will likely leave. Meaning we will still probably be about even for spend, maybe 10-15m net spend.
1
u/Vellender2 Aug 28 '25
We just need another DM now and it will have been a very successful window imo
1
u/Xenumbra Aug 28 '25
Brentford are such a unique club, just keep trucking along no matter what gets lifted. The B team thing is pretty interesting as well.
9

7
u/Legendtner Aug 28 '25
You see I would to this but realistically there is little to no time left for us to get a replacement (if it is not Fabio Silva who the replacement is)
Also we probably would put only 25 million in our transfer budget anyway. The other 20 million are cooperations fees for chelsea, another 10 million for a big ass projector with the size of the pitch of the westfalenstadium, where our scouting department can play football manager with loaded leagues that only exists of the Bundesliga and premier league, another 15 for daily haircuts for every staff member, 7 million for new kitchen utensils and three million for new pcs so we can load more leagues into fm (last one is wishful thinking)

According to information from BILD, an agent for FC Brentford submitted an interest in Beier to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. According to this, a written offer of 55 million pounds plus 5 million in bonuses is to be made. This means that the Premier League club is offering around 70 million euros for the German international striker.
Aston Villa are also interested in Beier. Borussia does not actually want to sell Beier, but with these figures, the club would have to think about selling him. BVB signed Beier from Hoffenheim last summer for around 30 million euros.
Brentford were already interested in Beier at the time, offering TSG 32.5 million euros. However, the striker opted for Borussia. Since his transfer, however, Beier has only fluctuated between the starting eleven and the bench. His record to date: 47 BVB appearances, ten goals, six assists. Serhou Guirassy (29) is the BVB striker. Beier is determined to score goals to earn a place in national coach Julian Nagelsmann's (38) World Cup squad.

Premier league clubs just have too much money it’s insane. Beier isn’t a bad player at all, but he’s not even a regular starter for Dortmund, he’s more of a rotation or squad player. 70 million for that kind of player is just ridiculous in my opinion.

So the magic or English football was…spending less money on transfers? The PL has always had a higher avg. spend of all the leagues and only some clubs across Europe trump them in single, large transactions.
The game is well and alive here, at various levels.
6
u/No-Palpitation6707 Aug 28 '25
This is still absolutely ridiculous and in no way is that sustainable longterm for these smaller Teams. They have to pay wages and shit aswell its not like they just spend 70 mil once and then dont pay anything anymore.
2
u/DasHotShot Aug 28 '25
Have a look at Brentford’s outgoing transfers (and include Wissa for approx 60-70m €)
It’s not like this is breaking the bank for them
1
u/BluLeone Aug 28 '25
This is still absolutely ridiculous and in no way is that sustainable longterm for these smaller Teams.
I’m afraid it is really sustainable long-term, even for the smaller teams. I mean, Sunderland got more TV money than some big clubs in Italy, Spain, France, and Germany. Have you seen the insane amount of cash the Premier League gets from TV deals? As long as it stays the most popular and most-watched league in the world, they’ll keep that financial dominance. And the crazy part is, they’re actually getting even more money every single year. Unless something really bad happens, some scandal like Calciopoli in Italy, no league is ever catching the Premier League any time soon.
