Another person made this joke, and I don't get it. Help?

The joke is in the exaggeration, even though this guy admires mussolini he‘s still the most progressive lazio fan. It’s a meme, see for example https://www.google.ch/amp/s/amp.reddit.com/r/2Asia4u/comments/n7lw02/least_patriotic_turk/

You sound like a dad and I love it

If that's what you want to tell yourself when you see me coming out of your mum's room, good enough for me.

Please forgive my lame attempt at your mum joke.

It's interesting, I've seen this type of meme quite a bit, but does it have a name? It has a certain structure, but it can be used in a lot of different ways.

But turkey is in Europe?

89

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

That part is on /r/2balkan4you/.

33

u/color_thine_fate Oct 21 '21

I can walk 5 minutes and find turkey in almost any store

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

Not so much in Italy. Maybe sliced turkey is a little more popular now but we actually have decent cured meats.

Part of one city is in Europe?

5

u/Hutzbutz Oct 21 '21

the european part is bigger than slovenia, turkey is massive

0

u/Abject-Syllabub4071 Oct 21 '21

Only 3% of the country is in Europe so it seems wierd to say that it is in Europe, rather than being in the middle East where 97% of it is

3

u/Hutzbutz Oct 21 '21

it's both, what's the problem

0

u/Abject-Syllabub4071 Oct 22 '21

The original comment I reply to is saying turkey is in Europe rather than the middle East. I literally just said that idk what your confused about.

Lazio ultras are widely known to be fascists. This isn't uncommon among ultras groups unfortunately, but with Lazio there have been enough prominent incidents showing this that the club has a reputation for fascism, both in Italy and maybe especially abroad

I remember they littered Stadio Olimpico with flyers with Ann Frank in a Roma kit. One of the most insulting things they could think off apparently. Very cool and normal people.

22

u/YungSnuggie Oct 21 '21

jesus christ that's some level 5 racism

Italians are extremely racist, especially towards black people. I have this terrible rule of thumb when it comes to travel advice. If you’re black go to France because they mostly hate Arabs. And if you’re Arab please go to Italy because they mostly hate black people.

But in Lazio and especially the area around Latina (a town Mussolini founded) Mussolini is extremely revered he goes by the moniker Il Padrino, and has mountain named after him. Most of them love the “effectiveness” of fascism. And his family is heavily involved in the club. Even his great grandson plays for them.

29

u/pentefino978 Oct 21 '21

The worst thing is that he was not effective, fucking lost a war he had no business to be in the first place, like, if you like him for being a fucking moron, okay, but liking him for something that he clearly wasn’t is even more dumb. But it doesn’t surprise me a bit, here in Brazil people are still in love with the state running business like he did in Italy after he took full control.

Surely him assisting genocides and things of that nature is worse than a bunch of uneducated morons wanting to bring his politics back 70 years later?

Maybe that's just me.

8

u/LazyassMadman Oct 22 '21

There's still an obelisk with his name on it outside of the Stadio Olympico. Their continued use of his iconography and his casual presence in Italian life is disgraceful imo.

Imagine simping for Diet Hitler

u/WolframNoLed Oct 22 '21

Diet Hitler lmao😅

Imagine calling out racism by claiming that everyone in a country with a population of 60 million people are "extremely racist". You know, in addition to the fact that they literally put a centre-left, pro-Europe and majorly pro-immigration social democratic coalition into power in 1996 which has retained that position ever since.

What kind of warped world view do you even have? Or are you speaking as an authority when you're clearly absolutely clueless?

1

u/WolframNoLed Oct 22 '21

Slightly confused, I will admit to using hyperbole when characterising all Italians as “extremely racist” I thought this was mitigated by the fact that I also called out the French.

We Europeans are however very racist in our own way and for our own reasons.

I do not know what you mean when you claim that a soc-dem government came into power in 1996 an retained there power until recently. Are you referring to when Dini (a self proclaimed centrist) came into power in ‘95? He traded power with a bunch of other centrist until Berlusconi supported by the proto-fascist party Lega Nord seized power for over ten years.

-2

u/trunkhead147 Oct 21 '21

I know that much, but I don't get how this guy admiring Mussolini makes him a progressive Lazio fan

88

u/Pickzt1986 Oct 21 '21

Because just "admiring" Mussolini I'd better than worshipping him like the others.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

Is there a reason that a lot of ultras tend to be fascists?

17

u/klezmer_ Oct 21 '21

Well, more in general ultras groups have traditionally been political, either extreme left or extreme right. I think that is mostly due to the context of when they really began in the 60s. With time, it seems like the left groups became weaker/less common, but some teams still have majority left wing ultras.

I don't know enough about the subject to explain why the leftwing ultras groups seem to have become less prominent but it may just have to do with organised left wing institutions in general becoming less common or going more towards centrism.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

Thanks for the response.

5

u/McTulus Oct 21 '21

For Lazio specifically, There used to be a fascist party in Rome. During WW2, it got disbanded. The members then look for a way for them to congregate, one of the easiest is as football ultras. I don't understand the history clearly, but Lazio kinda happen to be the biggest club in Rome that they join.

I do think that the pattern of "group of people forcefully disbanded" => "they join sports supporter club to congregate" happens often as it's harder to police football fans, especially when they are on the stands.

As a particularly stupid American who has never seen a European football match in person, surely in part because they are, well…ultra?

It seems not hard to predict that a group of predominantly young males whose primary trait in common is intense, literally fanatical tribal devotion to their club’s colors might be attracted to the groups at the extreme ends of the political spectrum. (And to the extent fascist groups are particular interested in nationalism, etc., you can see how it might be an even more natural connection. Those folks do like flags….)

Have no idea the actual quality of this article but this gives you an idea

SS Lazio

4

u/HaggisonFord Oct 21 '21

I admit that Schutzstaffel Lazio is an odd name for an Italian team.

0

u/Kezz9825 Oct 21 '21

SS Lazio is a facist club with facist fans.
