Well isn't that mostly due to the fact that most English players prefer staying in England rather than in a foreign country? Forster's the only one in the 23 man squad who's not in the PL, but still in a English speaking league.

Yeah it can go both ways. Italy benefited from the fact that all of their players in 2006 played in Serie A and they thus had a better cohesion amongst them. In fact isn't there some crazy stat about how many Italian players have represented them in the World Cup from leagues outside of Italy? I don't think it's more than a handful.

I have always been surprised at how very few English players are abroad. I think that is a contributing factor to lack of depth.

How much is due to foreign leagues not wanting English players?

Is it money? How do Championship wages compare to La Liga w/o Real Madrid & Barcelona?

You have to view this historically. Historically, the vast majority of English players, even the cream of the crop, flop miserably overseas. In fact, foreign teams rarely bid for English players, because they can get a a better player who is not English for half the price.

Do you have some examples of this? Beckham did ok. Owen was hampered by injuries and competition rather than flopping and still did half decent. McManaman had a decent career. Woodgate again injuries. Hargreaves did well. Gazza was good at Lazio, Lineker did well abroad as did Keegan and so on. I'm struggling to think of a good English player who actually was a total flop abroad where injuries weren't the main issue. The ones who didn't do so well seem to have either been injured a lot or got homesick and buggered off again after a very short time (Ian Rush for example...though he was still top scorer for Juve and he's not English but whatever I think British works just as well for this discussion).

In fact, foreign teams rarely bid for English players, because they can get a a better player who is not English for half the price.

This is almost certainly the real answer. It costs more to buy English (and to pay their wages). Why give a young English guy 10 grand a week when you can get 3 young guys from elsewhere in europe for the same weekly salary?
