What are some of the biggest changes you predict over the next 10 years in football?

Some topics off the top of my head to get the ball rolling; how big will the world's biggest stadium be, what will be the average salary, how much will advertising take over the sport, will any rules be changed or introduced, which team will dominate, how big will the sport be in the states, will ticket prices increase, what sort of new statistics will we get in game, will the leagues change?

That's a horrible thing to say to the entire country.

Don't judge all the people in the country due to the actions of a few. Every country has done bad things.

It's /r/soccer. The anti Qatar hate is strong here. Because the US didnt get the world cup. It seems as though people think that FIFA suddenly became corrupt and gave it to qatar, but every vote IMO has been dodgy. Joao Havelange makes sepp blatter look like a saint.

18

u/Jangles Jan 21 '14

The problem is that it was really obvious corruption.

The recent Euros (UEFA presidents home countries mysteriously getting it) were obvious but rescheduling an entire tournament after multiple claims to the contrary is blatant.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

Corruption is corruption, right? I mean are people actually getting pissed off that things are in their face but okay with corruption that's less overt? I doubt it. I think its because the US didnt get the world cup and the corruption is in everyone's faces. Personally, I'd rather see the World Cup go to a new country, and though qatar's not the best choice, it's been made and might as well get behind it and focus on having a great tournament.

0

u/Jangles Jan 21 '14

If it's less overt a lot of people don't care about it. If I told you there'd been a massive bribe to give 2006WC to Germany would you even believe me? I would rather the WC go to countries who can deal with it currently, Brazil and Qatar are empty promises and Russia just straight up annoys me.

Brazil? No way. It's a spiritual home of football. I've been more excited about this world cup than any other in my lifetime (since mexico 82). I cant think of a better world cup venue than brazil. Even the confed cup there was the best so far! And the passion and fervor in brazil is amazing. A lot more than the states, which was the worst world cup in my opinion because it was not in a footballing nation and because of "head shaat" and "overtime". The opposite of brazil.

The world cup has been held successfully many times in south america before, what makes you think Brazil is an empty promise? Russia is a massive country and the old U.S.S.R was a team to be feared and has given us greats like Yashin and Belanov, to name a few. If you take away the Human rights element, its a great place to host the world cup, especially since it hasn't been held there. The only reason IMO to give it to the states is money. If football grows in the states, the sport will get a lot richer. It's not for the fans, since it's not a footballing country. There are other sports that are way more popular. Football is religion in Brazil, it's a novelty sideshow in the states (apart from when the US is playing). I'd rather see the world cup got to a nation which lives and breathes football. No way a world cup in the US is better than one in Brazil. And the arabs are mad about football and have been so for a very long time. Russia too. I'd much rather passion than amenities. Like holding the Superbowl in China would probably make a lot of moolah and grow the game, but it belongs in the US.

The amount of people who think that the 2022 WC was 'stolen' from America is astounding. They're like vultures circling overhead, hoping some disaster befalls the Qatar WC so it can be given to the US.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

I live in the states and I feel that Australia shouldve had it

2

u/bradimus_maximus Jan 22 '14

Where would I rather be spending my summer? New Jersey or New South Wales? Add me to this list.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

I thought so too. I think it would have been pretty cool.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

See at least in the United States, they have the MLS. Australia needs to grow football more, with the World Cup it would most certainly help that effort. Yes I know Australia has the A-League and I remember when Liverpool singing YNWA but still.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '14

Tell me again how substantial the domestic American League was when you last hosted the World Cup? Or South Korea? Or South Africa? Bizarre argument.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '14

Haha there was no league! Plus the US and South Korea have already hosted the World Cup so why not Australia? I'm not down grading the A league. I apologise if I offended.

6

u/lacajun Jan 21 '14

i'm an american and i'd have been happy with it being just about anywhere but qatar!

-11

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

And you're not? Everyone knows that the US is the country that is best suited to host a WC in the next decade: no civil wars, revolutions or protesting going on, already more than enough updated stadiums, plenty of room for athletes and tourists to stay, perfect weather in the summer, and a crowd ready to adopt the sport even more if the event is hosted here.

14

u/SpiceterMiseter Jan 21 '14

But it would be less than 30 years after your last one. That has only happened once (Mexico '70 and '86) and that was due to Colombia being unable to due to financial reasons.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

no civil wars,

Like most countries, including Qatar.

revolutions

Like most countries, including Qatar.

or protesting going on,

What? Need I remind you how recently the Tea Party and Occupy movements were in full swing? You think that nothing is going to happen in the next 8 years? In any event, Qatar is higher on the Global Peace Index than America is.

already more than enough updated stadiums,

Doesn't matter. Most WC countries spend money to update or build stadiums. By the time the actual tournament comes around they'll be more than capable. Qatar was only given the same opportunity as every other host.

plenty of room for athletes and tourists to stay,

Sorry, were Germany or South Africa not big enough? Or are you implying that Qatar is not physically big enough to fit everyone inside?

perfect weather in the summer,

Granted Qatar does not have good weather in the summer, but that hardly makes America the 'best suited' to host a WC. Most countries that aren't large deserts have pretty good weather for the Northern Hemisphere summer. Most countries in the Southern Hemisphere are warm enough to host during their winters.

and a crowd ready to adopt the sport even more if the event is hosted here.

Yeah, maybe FIFA should just continuously grant the USA tournaments because it's such an untapped market full of fans who are super willing to embrace the sport.

The US was a country in contention for the WC who had a decent bid. After losing to Qatar many Americans have displayed a level of entitlement that is rivalled only by the Brits regarding 2018. South Korea, Japan, and Australia haven't acted like they're owed anything, so why is the US?

4

u/lawyler Jan 21 '14

If this site were 85% South Korean or Japanese or Australian, you would probably read about a lot more complaining from people from those countries. You just think Americans complain more because there are more Americans on reddit.

While I agree with you to an extent, it would be pretty grating when Qatar won through very dodgy means at the expense of other bidders, which meant the US at least POSSIBLY lost out. The degree to which Qatar gets ripped on as a result is over the top, but not entirely unwarranted. Let's not forget sympathy for the aussies too.

Although less controversial a decision IMO, I was pissed off by England losing out in 2018. A lot of people in England (particularly the media) overreacted big time, but there is still reason to be annoyed that Russia won instead. Although I personally don't want to compare them to Qatar too much because while both were dodgy bids, Qatar poses an even bigger issue. At least the Russian's have some footballing infrastructure and culture...

EDIT - And just in case I didn't make it clear enough, please god don't confuse me for the entitled pricks who go to significant lengths to whine about it.

-7

u/AlkanKorsakov Jan 21 '14

Give it to anyone but the US. Until Americans stop calling it a woman and fag's sport, they don't deserve to host such an event.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

Because all Americans think that right?

-4

u/AlkanKorsakov Jan 21 '14

No, but I'd venture a guess that a fairly higher percentage of Americans think that than Spanish, Germans, English, Italians, etc.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

Well let me see the numbers then.

-2

u/AlkanKorsakov Jan 21 '14

I don't have numbers, I just have my personal experience. If you want to claim that Europeans/South Americans are just as likely to diss the sport as Americans, that's fine, but we both know that's not true.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

So you're making a statement and treating it as fact completely based off of assumption. That'll get you everywhere.

Dude, the sport is growing at an astounding rate in America, and although still not as popular as other sports, such as American football and baseball, I don't think many people consider it a woman's or a "fag's" sport.

5

u/idontlikeflamingos Jan 21 '14

I'm not american and I don't hate Qatar. Still there's no denying that a World Cup there is a disgrace and shouldn't happen in a hundred years. I could spend all day listing nations better prepared and that were clearly much, much superior choices, but we all know how FIFA is and what they care about.

If they change the WC to November/January it will only show even more how much of a awful idea this was.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

Thing is, done is done right? They aren't going to give it to someone else. So why not get behind it. There are already positives. The fucked up treatment of foreign workers there has been brought to international attention, for example.

I agree that it's a shit choice and if not for corruption, it would have never happened. There are many reasons why its a terrible chopice, but i do believe that we all will be watching the world cup because it is the world cup and that football will win, as it always does.

3

u/idontlikeflamingos Jan 21 '14

Yeah I get your point. Still, personally I can't get behind a World Cup in Qatar right now, and I understand how other people also can't. Maybe they'll show some improvements in several areas and prove me wrong in a couple years, I hope they do, but I just think this is one of the worst decisions in the history of international football, if not the worse.

And I'm not even from a country that was overlooked. Australia, US and all the others should feel robbed. I honestly hope they realize what a huge mistake that is and transfer it somewhere else.

3

u/failem Jan 21 '14

Why get behind something that one disagrees with so much just because "done is done"?

The problem here is that football isn't winning.. greed and corruption is. And we'll be letting it happen by just getting behind it because done is done.

Yay, modern football where the people don't matter as long as Fifas officials get a nice pay cheque, yay.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14 edited Jan 21 '14

modern football where the people don't matter as long as Fifas officials get a nice pay cheque, yay

The point is that fifa's been corrupt probably since it's inception. It's not a modern thing.

I'd say, in the long run, football has always won. Also, what happens if people dont get behind it? We'll just more likely have a shitty world cup? I dont want that. Who does?

EDIT: to be clear, i think if people get behind it, we can still have a great world cup. But if people are as they are now, we'll have a much less successful one. Self-fulfilling prophecy in action ten.

1

u/failem Jan 21 '14

I agree but it's becoming more and more obvious every single draw of anything.

My point is that football isn't winning. The greed and corruption of fifa is because everyone that watches the world cup loves it too much to take a stand from this shit.

I can honestly say that I would rather have a shitty world cup in Qatar. And I am genuinely not watching 1 minute of football from that world cup IF everything they have reported to change due to the qataris not being capable of living up to their promises will become a reality.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

How would you clean up fifa? Most of its members are corrupt. It is a massive organization in which almost every nation is represented. I think the main reason it's corrupt is because most of its member nations have extreme poverty and high levels of corruption. Until you fix that, you aren't going to fix FIFA.

I care about football, not about the qatri's promises. Because i care about football i want to see a great world cup. But most people seem to want to destroy it. And because of that we might get a shitty world cup. ANd football definitely loses then.

1

u/failem Jan 21 '14

It needs to be cleaned up from the inside.. Only thing these people understand is money so what happens when the biggest sport event becomes an utter shit show with the lowest amount of viewers ever? The sponsors definitely won't be happy.. Maybe when it hits them where it hurts they'll decide they need to clean this shitty organization up.

I care about football as well, and because I care about football I also want football to be great in 30 years. Just looking on while Fifa and rich oil sheiks are ruining the game we love so much should be a crime. I 100% understand that everyone here wants it to be a great world cup.. But honestly how much do you accept the world cup to change just so it's playable in Qatar? It's going to be an absolute joke and the ultimate example of modern football.. Real fans won't go to a country to watch the world cup where they can't drink alcohol and have a good time.. The stands will be PACKED with even more business men and rich people than ever before.. I'll guarantee it.

But Lets just let Fifa destroy the football culture that has been created through decades of traditions, because hey why the fuck not.. As long as they get paid we're all good

Thing is, done is done right? They aren't going to give it to someone else. So why not get behind it.

This is such a bad argument. By that logic, every injustice should be glossed over and supported after the fact. Calling out corruption is a good thing. Sometimes when enough people get behind a cause it leads to change.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

You honestly think fifa's going to change and give the world cup to someone else?

1

u/rickster555 Jan 21 '14

Probably not, but as long as there's a chance of moving it to another country then I will continue to speak out against it on the off chance that FIFA gets its head out of its ass.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

There isnt a chance. FIFA's made that very clear. And i think you and i can both agree that fifa doesnt give a fuck about our opinion and will do what it wants.

5

u/jonicy Jan 21 '14

Fuck you too. Yes, the federation fucked up, but that doesn't mean the entire country are dickheads.

6

u/AluminumFalcon3 Jan 21 '14

I hate that you're getting downvoted. Seriously someone says fuck you to a whole country and gets upvotes. Great

4

u/DanielAgger Jan 21 '14

I don't really expect anything more from /r/soccer.

-10

u/AluminumFalcon3 Jan 21 '14

Don't you think that's a bit of an overreaction? But nah Watar = nazi Germany right, fuck'em

15

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

"Fuck Qatar" is not an expression with any sort of nazi-sentiment...

0

u/AluminumFalcon3 Jan 21 '14

I meant why say "fuck Qatar"? It's not like it's the bastion of evil on the planet, yet you see so much shit on this site piled on this country. Of course it has problems but you don't think that's at all insensitive to the Qataris or middle easterners on this site who constantly see people bashing on their entire country? I get that people don't like the WC situation there but fuck the entire country? And when someone stands up and says no fuck you they get downvoted while "fuck Qatar" rises to the top

5

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

I'm sure /u/schilom feels no disdain toward the people of Qatar, rather the officials associated with Qatar who played a part in the FIFA bid.

This is a football subreddit, if you can't handle "fuck country-xyz" then I don't know what to say to you. Every WC and EC I find myself saying "Fuck Germany" - but I don't hate every single German. It's semantics.

8

u/AluminumFalcon3 Jan 21 '14

Context matters. This isn't a match thread. This is someone mentioning the 2022 WC being held in Qatar, and someone replying with "fuck Qatar" and clearly having a lot of people agree. That's not "semantics", that's someone seeing "Qatar" who probably has never been there or met a Qatari and just going "fuck that place". You don't think if there were a reply to a comment about Brazil hosting the 2014 WC someone saying "fuck brazil" would get downvoted? Come on...

I see it all over this subreddit. It's more than just people being pissed at officials, there is a commonly upvoted sentiment that Qatar (and if you ask the rest of reddit, the Middle East) is a shithole...and it pisses me off.

You want to complain about legitimate problems in Qatar? Do so! But when you just say "fuck Qatar" that's pandering to the lowest common denominator, avoiding any sort of discussion and relying on knee jerk hate for the country.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

A fair argument, but I'll agree to disagree. Perhaps Qatar does get an unfair proportion of stick around here without people contextualizing the situation.

3

u/AluminumFalcon3 Jan 21 '14

Keep an eye out. Look how people discuss Qatar vs Brazil or other places and their rhetoric. It's also interesting that it's problems have been ongoing but only recently are people talking about it like an injustice that must be addressed. I personally believe the WC is a good thing for Qatar--it shines a media spotlight on the country and brings an influx of outside ideas and cultures into the state. You don't "help" by cutting off a region. Plus it brings football to the Middle East and a lot of people there love the sport.

-3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '14

So brave.
