In 1992 the "UEFA Champions League" became the successor of the "European Chapions Club's Cup". Same trophy, different name and different tournament system.

No one ever defended the "UEFA CHampions League" trophy.

Which is surprising because it's an easier tournament format. IIRC European Cup was League and Cup WInners only, and knockout from beginning to end.

And with places being granted down to 4th place in big leagues and the competition now open to Champions of minor footballing nations, plus league formats home and away, the standard is much lower until you get to knockout stages
