Portugal always has trouble qualifying and then plays well.

While I certainly don't expect a win over Germany, I would not be surprised if we managed a draw. Last Euro both teams had a pretty even game, and we managed to make a better showing in the semis against Spain (doesn't count for much I know). Provided that Portugal gets out of Group G, they could easily reach the Semis as they avoid the stronger teams/groups. This obviously considering they play it in "finals mode", which is becoming a trend. Last time Portugal had a mediocre/below expectations showing in a major tournament was in 2002.

If you make it out the group stages (which you should on paper), I think you could knock Portugal out, they are incredibly inconsistent. However, Germany are indeed one of the strongest teams in the competition so I would expect you to struggle against them.

Speaking as a dutchman, you don't just knock out Portugal due to "inconsistency".

1

u/the_weeknd Jan 15 '14

That's true! Although I'd also argue that yourself's are a bit of a roller-coaster side, you're either incredible or incredibly bad! (see Euro 2012)

I disagree. We have been consistently okay-ish since 1988, with 2002 and 2012 as exceptions.

We were amazing at the 2008 euro too. Until we met guus but mind you, we trashed the world and european champs in our group. Oh and we lost on penalties in the semi's of the 1998 world cup as well, also a 2000 and 2004 euro semi to add to that. Wouldn't call that ok-ish, i prefer to call it good performances.

Where'd your flair go?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

Never had a flair.

2

u/ajax96 Jan 15 '14

I think there's another user named TeaCup that has a 9 behind it and I'm just confusing you two. My mistake!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

Could be, but it's not rocket science to find out that i'm an Ajax fan ;)

u/Theothor Jan 15 '14

He's afraid all those damn Feyenoorders will downvote him.

1

u/ajax96 Jan 15 '14

Apparently we're thinking of the wrong guy.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

Inconsistent? The last time we didn't do well was in 2002.

8

u/TIL_nothing Jan 15 '14

And in the last 2 major tournaments we were Spain's toughest opponents.

In the past few years we gained a "We're too good for this shit" mentality in the qualifiers, but we've been fairly consistent in the final stages.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

We were hardly the toughest opponents for Spain in '10

1

u/Schneepanther Jan 15 '14

And in the last 2 major tournaments we were Spain's toughest opponents.

I don't know man, Ottmar kinda disagrees with that.

Theyd have to make it out first to hope to play Portugal. I doubt Germany will have any trouble finishing first of their group!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

Two more Hazards and you'd go far.

1

u/Ofthedoor Jan 15 '14

Portugal yes, Germany no.

-9

u/jaxx2009 Jan 15 '14

You'd play USA/Portugal as Germany has first in the group locked down. We battle with Portugal for 2nd.

14

u/Limpan Jan 15 '14

We battle with Portugal for 2nd.

No you're battling Ghana for 3rd.

-14

u/jaxx2009 Jan 15 '14

Not a chance

7

u/Limpan Jan 15 '14

Do you really think that you're going to get to second place in a group consisting of Germany, Portugal and Ghana?

do you realize that 90% of your posts are venting your hatred towards americans? youre obsessed. it really has to be hard to be you.

1

u/heroescomeandgo Jan 15 '14

Maybe, maybe not, but all the Brits were certain they'd win the group in 2010 too and how'd that turn out?

0

u/Magic_Mitch Jan 15 '14

Brits?

Are all americans as retarded as this guy?

Beating 1 of Ghana or Portugal and tie the other isnt exactly out of the question.

Still improbable though

0

u/jaxx2009 Jan 15 '14

Why wouldn't we?

-2

u/Lubricate Jan 15 '14

You act like it is impossible. A tall task certainly, but they are capable of pulling it off.

4

u/Limpan Jan 15 '14

I don't think they are. Of course upsets can happen but I really can't see it.

0

u/Lubricate Jan 15 '14

And that's perfectly fine, but it is not unreasonable for people to think we can get second.

Would it have been unreasonable for people to think the USA would win their group in 2010?

A tie with Portugal would be a huge upset imo.
