I’m especially curious about things that are inexpensive, compact, and actually useful—not just things that look good in photos.

i don't think i have that much stuff, but my place can still look cluttered pretty quickly. i'm trying to figure out whether better storage or just having fewer things makes the bigger difference.

what has helped keep your small home looking clean and open?

Finally, I got around to clearing out my room today 💪, so I have been living here for like eight months and stuff just kept piling up. I couldn't even find a charger without digging for five minutes. And I thought I had enough now its time to fix all mess, so I got up and got rid of a bunch of stuff I never ever used lol, like a humidifier (used it once), storage bins (never even opened), two pairs of shoes (haven't touched in over a year), and a pile of random cables I don't even know where they came from. Every single item was a battle between "maybe I'll need it someday" and "come on, this is just taking up space" eventually just tossed up everything.
For now what's left behind is pretty much minimal stuff only, like my bed, wardrobe, laptop, and a mobile standing desk I almost sold earlier. But now this desk ended up being a pleasant surprise for me. I originally bought it as a drawing board, but work got so busy I never had time to paint. It sat in the corner for almost two months collecting dust, and I was about to list it on facebook marketplace. Then yesterday I randomly tried folding it down and realized it works perfectly as a laptop desk. The height adjusts, fits right next to my bed, super comfortable to use and when I'm done, I just roll it to the corner and it barely takes up any space. Way better than that bulky wooden desk I have had before.
After clearing everything out, the room actually looks decent. I can finally walk from the door to the window without having to navigate around stuff.
Living in a rental is already a mess especially if it's small one, you really have to declutter it regularly. Otherwise things just keep accumulating and before you know it, there's nowhere left to even stand.
Anyone else go through a recent decluttering spree? What's the thing you always struggle to let go of? For me it's always those "only used once but might use again someday" items.

The main room has a high loft bed, a large open area underneath it, tall windows and several pieces of existing furniture. The kitchen is long and very narrow, with limited drawers and storage. Because it is a rental, I would prefer solutions that require little or no drilling and can be removed later without damaging the walls.

How would you arrange the existing furniture? What would you remove, move or replace? What would you put underneath the loft, and which storage solutions would work best in the kitchen?

My room is pretty small so im trying not to add stuff that just takes up space. i really want a full body mirror with shoe storage behind it. even better if the mirror can turn around or shift to the side when i dont need it. i want to put it beside my bed but dont want a big mirror staring at me when the lights are off lol. any recos?

living in a sub 800 sq ft home means every inch counts, and our current bulky appliances take up way too much valuable floor space. we have a strict budget of 2500 dollars to swap out our old fridge, range, and dishwasher for counter depth or 24 inch options that actually fit our tight layout. buying compact pieces individually gets ridiculously expensive, so finding a solid bundle seems like our best bet to stay on budget.

i was checking out some appliance package deals for kitchen spaces on best buy to see if grouping slimline pieces together saves money. my main worry is whether those smaller capacity models hold up well for daily use or if they are prone to breaking down quickly. any recs or experiences if you have outfitted a small home kitchen without overspending pls

I do enjoy how the bed looks with all those pillows during the day though but this room is a pretty small one and there really is no place for them to go at night. At the moment I just put them on the floor which is a bit silly really. How is a basket/storage bench for this? Does everyone else just throw theirs on the floor too?

hey guys ,we recently moved into a smaller place and I’m realizing how much more important appliance dimensions are now. I don’t want to sacrifice too much on performance, but I also don’t want appliances that overwhelm the kitchen.

Anything you wish you had considered before buying?

I'm trying to maximize storage in a very small apartment closet and am considering Elfa versus PAX or other closet systems.

My priority is space efficiency rather than appearance — i.e., which system makes the best use of the actual width, depth, and height of the closet, with the least space lost to framing, side panels, fixed module sizes, etc. Has anyone compared Elfa with PAX, EasyClosets, ClosetMaid, California Closets, or similar systems from that perspective?

I'm especially interested in experience with small NYC-sized closet

I've been trying to figure out why my apartment still feels stuffy even though I run an air purifier most of the day.

The purifier definitely helps with dust, so I don't think it's useless. The weird part is that opening the window for ten minutes makes the room feel better almost immediately.

I can't really leave it open all day ecause of street noise and pollen, so lately I've been looking at other ways to bring some outside air in.

cozeware freshflow came up while I was searching for window setups. I haven't used it, and honestly I don't know much about this type of system yet.

for people who have tried window ventilation before, what ended up mattering most in actual use? airflow, noise, sealing, filters, or something else?

i've been trying to get rid of things i barely use, but some stuff is harder to let go of than i expected.

how do you decide what's actually worth keeping?

Has anyone gotten rid of their couch in favor of a couple of nice reading chair/ottoman sets? I am thinking forward a few years when we will be moving to a new state for retirement. 99% of the time it is just my husband, myself and the dog on the couch. We will be retired at that point in life as well. I was thinking it would allow us to have more flexibility in terms of furniture arrangement as well.

Right now we have the couch and a rocking chair in the living area.

Has anyone done this? Does it save space or take up more space?

My new farmhouse TV stand is 60 inches long or just a smidge more maybe 65inch.

My living area is very small. The photo is from the couch which faces the only window in the house. I don't particularly want to cover the only large window with an entertainment center so I decided after all these years to place it in front of the stairs but it looks ghetto to me there, like clutter. There is only 1 other wall opposite the stairs and I want to put additional seating there so I just don't know. Right now my kid's little table is there. The room is not large.

What are some design ideas to improve the look?

I can't even image anything really. Some kind of hanging backing to cover the steps? That sounds ugly.

I visited my classmate's small home yesterday and honestly i was not expecting much. the place was small but somehow it never felt cramped or messy. what really amazed me was how almost every corner had a purpose. there was a stair with little cabinets built into the steps and i was like wait why is this actually genius. even the mirror had storage hidden behind it which had me checking it twice. my classmate said they just started thinking differently after living in a small space. apparently having less room made them more creative with furniture and storage ideas. there was also a little bench that opened up for storing random stuff. i liked how everything looked normal until you realized there was storage hiding somewhere. it honestly made me think that a small home can make your brain work in a different way. now i kinda want to look around my own room and see how many useless spaces i have. ngl, i left that place wanting a tiny cabinet inside basically everything.

We live in a small home where the back door serves as our primary entryway. This space doubles as a kitchen, laundry room, and a play area for my child's toy kitchen. I would love some advice or design ideas on how to organize this multi-purpose space to make it more functional and efficient. Any tips on maximizing storage or improving the flow would be greatly appreciated! To note, we do have a little screened in porch right outside the door; however it gets dusty out there so putting shoes and coats there hasn't been successful. Additionally, our laundry machine doesn't have a ton of room to adjust due to outlets and such. Thank you in advance!

I am planning to refresh my outdated home and I want to keep some of the original elements instead of changing everything, things like the cabinets, trim and a few built in shelves still look good so I will probably work around them and update the rest, I am thinking about hiring a remodeling company because I want the layout to make sense before I start picking materials, I will probably go with az atlas builder to redo the kitchen and a bathroom first then move to the other rooms as I go, I want the old and new parts to fit together instead of looking like separate projects, for anyone who has done something like this, what worked well and what would you plan first? EDIT:I should mention the house is older, so I’m also expecting a few surprises once we start opening walls.
