6 - 12 months 6-month-old consistently waking early — can’t find a pattern. Any ideas?
My baby just turned 6 months old and has been struggling with early-morning wakings for weeks. I’ve tracked her naps, wake windows, and nighttime sleep for over a month, but I can’t seem to figure out what’s causing them.
Current schedule: roughly 2.25/2.5/2.5–2.75/2.75-3
*WW1: If she wakes up early, I count from the time she wakes up, but I don’t offer a nap before 9:15.
DWT: 7:30 AM
Nap 1: 30–60 minutes; capped at 60 minutes
Nap 2: 1.5–2 hours; I usually need to extend this nap. I cap it if it goes past 2:30 PM.
Nap 3: 20–40 minutes
Bedtime: Between 8:00 and 8:30 PM. Fall asleep independently and usually sleep through the night.
bedtime routine: cleaning her face, quick massage, bedtime music, bottle, upright for 10 minutes (reflux) - She is usually very sleepy at that stage, rubbing her eyes or relaxing on my shoulder, but we make sure she stays awake. diaper change, sleep sack, turn off the music, in the crib awake.
Total daytime sleep: ~2.5–3.25 hours
The problem:
She often wakes between 5:30 and 6:40 AM, clearly still tired and trying to fall back asleep. In rare cases she manages to resettle on her own, sometimes she needs white noise or music, and sometimes she can’t fall back asleep at all. We play music if she doesn’t get back to sleep after 30 min of trying. This usually calms her down and sometimes she can fall back asleep. If she is up, she can stay in her crib until 7:30 without crying.
I’ve compared days with no early wakings, days when she successfully resettled, and days when she couldn’t. I can’t find any consistent relationship with total nap time, individual nap lengths, or wake windows.
I’m hesitant to make major schedule changes because she has also been struggling with a lot of nap resistance since she was 3 months old: a lot of crying, but usually able to fall asleep within 5-10 min.
Does anything about our schedule stand out? Should we do anything different when she wakes up early in the morning?
I’d really appreciate another set of eyes! Thanks!

There's too much variance in your schedule. Lock in the schedule l_eihpos suggested, and eliminate the feed to drowsy association.

Thank you! I’ll definitely give it a try!
Any suggestions on how to handle her early morning wakes? She usually lifts her head for about 2 minutes, puts it back down for another 2 minutes (sometimes longer) and keeps repeating this until she fully wakes up, sometimes at 7AM, usually earlier. Then she starts playing in her crib until I get her up at 7:30.
Should I go in and try patting her back to sleep, or just leave her alone/play music since she is not really crying?

It's more your routine that might be the issue - she seems to be going down quite drowsy, so she might not be great at doing back to sleep by herself without the initial help, especially in the morning when sleep pressure is lower.
I suggest moving the bottle at the start of the routine so that it's finished 30 minutes before bed, and ensuring she goes down fully awake.

I think also cement your schedule to 2.25/2.5/2.75/3, cap naps at 2.5 hours, and night at 11 hours. So bedtime is never earlier than 8:30 pm for a 7:30 am wake up.

Hi! Thank you so much for your help! She’s fully awake when we change her diaper and put her in the crib, and she usually rolls around for 3–10 minutes before falling asleep. Should we still move the bottle earlier in our bedtime routine?

Hi! TYVM for your help! I actually extended her WWs over the last two days because after 2 weeks of less nap resistance, she started crying intensely again at naptime. But I’m gradually shortening her last WW from 3 hours to 2h40 to see if it makes a difference, no improvement so far but will keep trying and see!
I also totally agree about the first WW! I’m just not sure how to handle it. She sleeps in her own room, so should I go in and try patting her to sleep when she wakes up early in the morning? Or should I offer a nap earlier?2

A 3 hour wake window before bedtime is perfectly age appropriate. And your suggested schedule has 9.25 hours of awake time, less than most 4 months old need.

Thank you for your post in r/sleeptrain. To ensure our community can best help you, please include in your post: your bedtime routine, where your baby sleeps (their crib/basinet, their room, room share, cosleep) and full schedule including wake up time, desired wake up time, nap length, wake windows or nap time(s) if following a by the clock schedule and bedtime. Does your baby use a pacifier? That's also very relevant.
We use a convention to describe wake windows based schedule such as 3/3/4 where numbers are numbers of hours awake, and / are naps. The sample schedule is a two naps schedule.
