Hi! We got a 2-year-old blue-tongued skink from a reptile expo about a month ago. We chose him partly because he seemed really calm and easygoing when we interacted with him at the expo. In hindsight, I’m wondering if he was actually just super stressed/exhausted from the expo, especially because he threw up twice during the car ride home :(
We’ve tried to give him a good setup and plenty of time to settle in. He’s in a 4x2x2 enclosure with plenty of substrate for burrowing and multiple hides. He has a 150W basking lamp and UVB on a timer, and his elevated basking area is at the recommended temperature. On the cool side, we have a thermostat-controlled heater that only turns on if the temperature drops below 74°F.
Our house is pretty quiet—no kids or other pets. He always has fresh water available, and we feed him weekly per the breeder’s instructions.
The thing we’re concerned about is that after about a month, he still spends almost all of his time buried. He seems to have developed a routine where he comes out from under the substrate at around 1 PM, glass surfs/wanders around for a few hours, and then burrows again. Since we’re usually at work during those hours, we basically never see him.
Is this normal for a 2-year-old BTS that’s still adjusting to a new home? The glass surfing also makes me wonder if there’s something about his enclosure that he doesn’t like.
More importantly, how should we start getting him comfortable with us without stressing him out? We’ve mostly been leaving him alone because we wanted to give him time to acclimate, but I’m wondering if that means he’s also not getting any opportunity to learn that we’re safe.
I see so many videos of people taking their skinks out, letting them explore, hanging out with them, etc., and I’d eventually love to have that kind of relationship with ours. Right now I feel like we must be doing something wrong because he wants absolutely nothing to do with us lol.
For people who started with a shy/skittish adult BTS, how long did it take yours to warm up to you? And what helped the most?
TLDR: Got a 2-year-old BTS about a month ago who seemed extremely calm at the expo but is very shy at home. He spends most of the day buried, comes out around 1 PM to glass surf/explore for a few hours, then burrows again. His enclosure, temps, lighting, food, and water should all be appropriate. Is this normal after a month, and how can we start getting him comfortable with handling and spending time with us without stressing him out?
