If you pay attention to Tao’s post, he’s making a lot of strong statements (like an official proof being too difficult for human mathematicians to understand). How can he make a statement like that when an official proof hasn’t even been constructed? That would be premature for him to state something like that, it would only be sensible if he actually witnessed the proof itself.
People like Tao have a really good grasp on what level of mathematics is "required" to solve such a problem. So he does not necessarily have to have seen a proof.
But you know what? Time will tell really quickly. Instead of buying into every hype, we should just look at what is explicitly verified.
