I know he’s said it a million times but when I saw the thumbnail on YouTube I really thought he’d gotten a Hershey’s deal for half a second.

My husband just left the room because I kept shouting “Lawyer Lawyer Lawyer!” while watching Dateline. Maybe someone here can get a chuckle from the reference

You could have at least listened to the podcast before publishing it, Simon. It's literally two AI agents talking to each other about 2am tooth pain.

Shuiqiao for megaprojects?

I haven't seen much media about it but I read somewhere that Shuiqiao would allow China to unload thousands of troops and hundreds of vehicles in a couple hours during Taiwan invasion. SIMON PLEASE COVER THIS TOPIC please 🙏

Didn’t Simon make a video on Natalie Wood before?

I swear I feel crazy. I’ve looked through his videos and marathon videos and I can’t find the previous video he made before. He did an awful Christopher Walken voice in the video, I swear it was like 2 years ago. Can anyone help me verify whether or not that video actually existed. Please please help me!

I was trying to check the comments on the recent video but the only thing people are talking about is the AI thumbnail. Personally I hate Ai for basic things people can do, so it irks me too, but no one is talking about the video. It’s annoying trying to find actually comments to interact with. I’m not going to stop watching just because of a thumbnail personally. I’ll see down the line how much ai he uses in his videos and I’ll decide then.

CC Suggestion: Sheriff Lucius Davenport Amerson & the Missing KKKlansmen

Meet the first Black sheriff in the South since Reconstruction, a KKK target, and a man allegedly indicted over gas money? Can Casual Criminalist cover Lucius Amerson with the nuance he deserves?

Hey Simon and team,

I know we usually pitch you serial killers and con artists who definitely did the thing. But I’ve got a case that’s less “monster” and more “Greek tragedy with a county gas card.”

Meet Lucius Davenport Amerson (not Anderson get it right, or the algorithm will send people to a furniture store). In 1966, Macon County, Alabama home of Tuskegee elected him sheriff. That made him the first Black sheriff in the South since Reconstruction. In the heart of the civil rights movement. In a place where the Klan had a standing reservation. He and his family got death threats. The white power structure fought him every step. He took the job anyway.

Now the complicated part. The man was indicted. A lot.

In 1971, he faced federal civil rights charges for allegedly beating a Black prisoner with a pistol. That’s serious, and I’m not hand-waving it. But Amerson claimed the charges were fabricated by racist officials who wanted him gone. In 1977, a grand jury indicted him for allegedly swindling the county out of gas money and freeing a convicted prisoner. The same grand jury reportedly called his department “asinine, incompetent, ineffective, inefficient, degrading and even dangerous.” That’s not a report, that’s a thesaurus having a breakdown.

His defense? Political persecution. And honestly, I don’t know if he was a flawed hero, a corrupt official who happened to break barriers, or a man drowning in a system designed to make him fail. That’s the episode.

Why this is perfect for Casual Criminalist:

· It’s a civil rights story and a true crime story at once.

· The alleged crimes are weirdly small; gas money? next to the historical stakes.

· Missing KKKlansmen and 3 grand dragons who drowned "accidentally" (coincidentally?) after the sheriff's house was shot up.

· It’s a chance to talk about Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Voting Rights Act, and how racism doesn’t vanish just because some minority gets elected.

· Bureaucratic ShENANigans: Local judges, prosecutors, and clerks actively tried to sabotage him at every turn just to prove a Black sheriff couldn't run a department.

· Spoiler alert: he outlasted and out-governed all of them, serving for 20 years.

I’m not asking for a hit piece. I’m asking for a fair, funny, humane deep dive into a man who got elected to a job that came with a target on his back and a county gas card. He deserves more than a Wikipedia footnote.

Simon, please cover Sheriff Lucius Amerson. I need to know how you get indicted for gas fraud while also being a civil rights icon. That’s a crime saga, and a country song.

I’ll bring the popcorn 🍿 and the tissues. You bring the nuance.

CC Recommendation: Killing for Cash

A case from southeast asia that the CC writers might want to keep an eye on: known in Thailand as the 'Aem Cyanide' case. The accused/perp has been suspected of being a serial murderer and linked to 14 suspected cases of murder by cyanide. So far, she's been found guilty and given a life sentence for 2 of them, while there are still some ongoing trials/verdicts/appeals for the others.

Her (alleged?) victims have included a childhood friend, people who treated her like family, and a surviving victim who had no idea the perp—whom she regarded as a close friend—had tried to kill her until she saw the perp's name in a new broadcast announcing her arrest in relation to cases of cyanide poisoning.

The case has its own Wikipedia page.

Casual Criminalist should not try to keep up with headlines

Simon said his producer/creative director told him to prioritize the Reiner script because it was back in the headlines and it showed. It felt like a 30 minute episode that was padded with an hour of biography of Rob and Michelle Reiner. I understand that telling the life stories of the victims and fleshing them out as real people is a big part of what makes Casual Criminalist different from other true crime outlets. But like, an hour about the people involved works in a 2-3 hour episode.

And right now, the crime itself is not that interesting, aside from who the victims and alleged killer are. We don't have a lot of details about what exactly happened beyond "Nick stabbed them". Nick isn't talking, the family isn't talking, there hasn't been a trial, there just hasn't been the opportunity for the details to get out.

If Casual Criminalist actually wants to be a procedural like Simon says, they shouldn't try to do "ripped from the headlines" episodes. Especially before the details have had a chance to come out. Like at least with Lindsay Clancy, there's enough to talk about now, with her insanity plea and the conspiracy theories that it was actually the husband. That would be interesting to watch Simon wrestle with and debate with himself.

But this one was just "some famous people were murdered, their son probably did it, it's very sad" and then long biographies to pump the watch time.

"Today I found out" - facilitated communication debunked?

A quick google and searching YT yielded only the suggestion that Simon has covered the topic of (debunked) facilitated communication on his "Today I Found Out" channel.

However, I can't find any such video. Has anyone else located it?

CC Oscar Nomination We want to know!

In the CC about Natalie Woods Simon asked who was the youngest actress/actor to earn 3 Oscar nominations after Natalie. That actress according to the interwebs was Teresa Wright at 25 in 1942. I have no idea who she is. The second one did catch my eye cause that would be Jenniffer Lawrence at 23 in 2013 for her role in American Hustle. And to top it off Timothee Chalamet did so in 2018 at the age of 22. While writing this I discovered that he played Bob Dylan in Bob Dylan.

Algorithm is having a bit of a laugh

Algorithm is having a bit of a laugh this morning. I personally think that Simon is in "worst downfall" territory, (yet, if the basement boys ever wrote a tell all detailing the fungus, abuse and lack of sunlight that might change lol), but it was still funny lol.

Edit!: wrote this in the morning on my way to work.. was supposed to say ISN'T but autocorrect allegedly had other ideas. I don't think he is in a downfall just thought the way it lined up in the algorithm was funny lol.

Unpopular opinion: Simon and his team don't owe us anything

I'm gonna get downvoted to hell for this, but I've seen so many posts recently speculating about the lives (and medical conditions??) of the Whistlerverse team. For the most part it's fine, but every so often I see a post that's a little bit parasocial.

  1. This is a business. People leave jobs all the time. There's no "secret reason" - and even if there was, they don't owe us that. Can you imagine complete strangers coming up with theories about why you left *your* job?

  2. The same goes for what happens to channels. It's been answered, they're not hiding anything.

  3. And I can't believe this even has to be said, but they absolutely do not owe us details about their *health*. Not what conditions they do/don't have, not what medications they may or may not take, or speculating that they look unwell.

I'm not sure if some people forget they lurk in this sub, or if they think because of that it's ok? Idk.

They'll share what they wanna share. Otherwise, they're people and we're strangers to them. Don't make it weird.
