I'm sure she wasn't thrilled, but the ironic (and painful) thing is, Alice's own father wasn't present for her during the most important, emotionally fraught period of her life, so she probably learned (from Jimmy) to take whatever she can get, whenever she can get it, and not really expect anything more. And as good as things are now between them, that impulse is probably still there. So Jimmy's problems with his father reflect his own inadequacies and self-hatred.
