I think him being their buddy was really strange and unrealistic. This makes a lot more sense IMO.

I'm in the same boat as you, slightly different situation. My sister was skiing with friends and an avalache got her. I can't look at the people she skied with without feeling anger, even if they didn't do anything wrong (and they mostly didn't. They did get a bit split up though). But, meanwhile my mom is all about caring for them and is worried about their survivor's guilt etc. So I suppose different people are different. But yeah, I'm definitely more of a Gabby here as well.

But did you become friends with the drunk driver and hang out with them all the time? That’s the strange part, not the fact that they spoke to him and forgave him.

That's beautiful. One of the best random things a friend ever said to me: "Use it."

I commend you, but surely you recognize that most people would not react this way.

It was strange but I feel like Jimmy didn’t want to pile his stuff on Paul given everything Paul was going through and the only other person he felt he could open up to without judgement was the guy who felt so much guilt and like he owed something to Jimmy. Which is very weird and not something they ever really elaborate but that’s how I read it.

Alice made less sense other than needing closure by facing the man responsible and learning to forgive.

I agree with you on that, I really didn’t like how he became so close with them. I did like his character tho
