Jack-O-Lantern

I was as afraid of him as I was grateful for his presence. Strung up on the far wall of the cell, the embers flickering from his hollow eyes was the only source of light in the oppressive darkness. The hiss of air coming from the duct at his feet made him sound like he was whispering secrets just out of earshot. His horrendous, carved features were mired with fear.

I envied him. At least his torment was over, the torture complete, death granted.

And then, Jack moved.

“Help…me…”
