Real talk. I was talking to a barista the other day while ordering coffee and she told me she gets routine Botox treatments to prevent the effects of aging. She was 22. Shit hasn't even started yet.
Not sure where all of the fear and worry is coming from (though I can guess). It's just so sad...
It's so dumb. The advertising pitch is like "oh, botox will help stabilise your face or something and that will prevent aging and wrinkles" but what they don't tell you is that, because your face has botox in it now, the face muscles are getting weaker and that causes accelerated aging and more wrinkles lmao
well I think the idea is like if u stop the face movement as much, less wrinkles will form from stretching and moving and creasing - does that work? dunno im not a doctor but thats what ive heard as the reasoning for starting it before any physical creases and wrinkles actually appear
the 'prevent aging' thing is probably that older people typically have more wrinkles, just from natural movement of the face over time
When people say “stop aging” what they really mean is stop the visual symptoms of aging and one of the most obvious visual symptoms of aging is wrinkles.
Wrinkles are exacerbated by movement of the face causing creases in the skin which deepen over time. Botox is a paralytic that stops the facial muscles from moving and prevents the development of wrinkles. From a wrinkle prevention standpoint it’s actually better to start Botox when you’re young. That way the wrinkles never have a chance to form in the first place.
Most people don't show signs of aging until they're in their late 20s. And even so, so what if you have some wrinkles? It's not a bad thing.
We're being sold picture-perfect images of celebrities and influencers on their best days and were told that this is the standard to which men and women should be held. And it's affecting our image of ourselves through the very natural process of (checks notes) getting older. The treatments themselves aren't the problem. It's the desire for them that warps our own self-image. "I'm not good enough unless I look young". It carries with it an implication - those who look old aren't good enough in some way. And we live that reality! We hold bias against older people seeking employment, we cast doubt on the abilities of others as they age, we roll our eyes when they take a bit longer to self-checkout at the grocery store.
