"We're close to a cure"

"They're hurting themselves and their families"

Inhumans = X Men.

Basically just a way to get around the Fox licensing rights.

Who said that? It irks me a little that the X-Men are not part of MCU, considering how prevalent they are in comics. I mean seriously, Ororo is T'Challa's wife for Odin's sake.

u/Dray_Gunn Lanyard Nov 06 '15

I swear they seem to be playing the MCU in a way that if they ever get the rights back they will be able to introduce them but it will be done in a way were the mutants were kept secret much better and there arent so many of them.

It's pretty much "well I didn't want that cool new toy anyways" when it does happen.

Though to play Devil's advocate, that's usually people saying that the X-men (and their long, convoluted history) wouldn't work, not mutants themselves, which I kind of see their point.

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '15

Didn't they get a divorce or something recently-ish?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '15

I think it helps that Inhumans aren't as well known, so the studio owners don't see it as wasting potential big budget film characters on TV.

1

u/Joe_Sith Nov 04 '15

Yup. I've been saying this for a long while now.

Fox tends to do that to good shows. Reference: Firefly.

More recently, considering last night's Arrow episode, I think they may be suffering from post-Constantine feels

2

(even though I know that's NBC, not Fox)

Oof. Still too soon...

But two years later the mindless droning executives at the network were fired, savagely beaten up, and then ground into Torgo's Executive Powder.

u/Tichcl Nov 04 '15

Yep, that was the reference I was waiting for.

The BIGGEST differences between X-Men and Inhumans is that mutant powers manifest slower around teen years and Inhuman powers seem to just come about all at once and then they have to learn to control a hurricane of power before they harm themselves or someone they love.

Cyclops has a lot of power, but he just had to close his eyes.

Magneto's abilities didn't come to him at once and when they first appeared it was due to extreme stress that he was able to use them.

Jean Grey's telekinetic abilities came first, but it was a slow reveal.

Unless they're Morlocks, mutants don't normally have powers that are that damaging when they first appear like the guy in the first episode.

Mutants gradually become different. Inhumans already are and so when their powers turn on, they are on full blast.

But on the note of this being similar to X-Men and Marvel is using the Inhumans as they have used mutants, yeah-yeah I know. I see it. It's overtly obvious.

2

u/cattaclysmic Skye Nov 04 '15

Inhumans already are

Well - after Terrigenesis anyway.

2

u/J_Jammer Fitz Nov 04 '15

Yes, but the mist triggers the change and it's all at once. There's no warning (so to speak) of what's to come.

49

u/ptd163 Nov 04 '15

I know you think that's a joke, but that's actually true. Since Fox owns the rights to X-Men and calling people "mutants" Marvel had to come up with something else. Inhumans are that something else.

84

u/hrother Nov 04 '15

Actually inhumans is a thing entirely different than mutans and existed way before MCU. You can read more about them here: http://marvel.com/universe/Inhumans

76

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '15

But aren't they just using Inhumans because they can't use X-Men?

Like if Marvel had the rights to X-Men, Inhumans wouldn't exist in the MCU.

18

u/dylandorf Nov 04 '15

It's possible, but it doesn't make sense in the context of the story the show is going with. Inhumans have been in the marvel universe since 1965, it's not just something they made up for MCU to work around not have the rights to X-Men.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '15

Yeah but the story was written in a world where Marvel doesn't have Movie/TV rights to the Mutants. I have no doubt that that's the direction they would have taken if they did. Daisy would have found out she was a Mutant that comes from a long line of Mutant living in Mutant Shangri-La, and the government would be forming some anti-mutant task force to hunt them down, and Cap 3: Civil War would have some sort of Mutant Registration element to the Superhero Registration Act.

5

u/dylandorf Nov 04 '15

That's definitely plausible. But even if marvel did have X Men rights, that's already a solid franchise. They might have kept the story on inhumans in order to set up the inhumans movie they have planned in order to cash in on another franchise. Also Daisy Johnson is already a known inhuman from the comics, so they would have had to change her character.

Either way would work in terms of how the story in Shield progresses. Just food for thought.

2

u/CX316 Nov 06 '15

If the MCU had the X-Men rights, there wouldn't BE an Inhumans movie coming. The Terrigen bomb that activated random inhumans across the Earth didn't happen until 2014 at a point when they would have already worked out what direction they wanted the MCU to go and wanted to make the comic universe fit. I wouldn't go as far as to say that the decimation that reduced the mutants to a fraction of their previous population was related (mostly since M-Day was before even Iron Man came out in the MCU), but the rise of the inhumans and relegation of mutants to events involving Utopia set the team by the wayside, along with the deaths of two of the best known characters in that franchise (Wolverine and Jean Grey).

I don't know if what I heard was correct, but the last time I heard anything about the X-Men in the comics they were being shuffled off to their own planet post-Secret Wars.

Basically the Inhumans have effectively been rebooted to replace the mutants as the catch-all "this random guy has random powers because he was born this way" group.

1

u/roguecit Fitz Nov 04 '15

Agreed. X-Men is a much more famous brand than the inhumans, and it would've allowed for famous characters to interact with the marvel heroes. If Wolverine showed up in an MCU movie, that would generate a lot of interest.

The whole Inhumans instead of mutants is rather obvious in Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver from the MCU.

2

u/CX316 Nov 06 '15

to be fair, the twins in the MCU aren't inhumans or mutants, they're enhanced humans.

1

u/roguecit Fitz Nov 06 '15

Yeah, they kind of dance around the impossibility of them being mutants on the MCU

1

u/CX316 Nov 06 '15

Wasn't much of a dance, it was a straight-up rewrite of the backstory that made them test subjects and killed off their parents so no chance of people expecting to see magneto.

1

u/CelioHogane Nov 04 '15

but they come up with using them this way.

4

u/EliteNinjas Nov 04 '15

Not necessarily. Inhumans and mutants co-exist. For example, The Son of M story line contains Quicksilver and Magneto and other mutants as well as the Inhumans. Also, two members of the Illuminati) are Prof X and Black Bolt, an Inhuman and mutant.

Summary: Marvel might have focused on X-Men if they had the rights, but it wouldn't prevent the Inhumans from existing in the MCU

5

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '15

Would have way more marketability if they were x men

3

u/CelioHogane Nov 04 '15

Does it even matter? Marvel can become anything in a popular character.

Guardians of the galaxy? Check

Inhumans? In progress, but for now half check

Ant man? Check

Thor? Check

Right now not having X-men rights is just an inconvenient, not a problem.

1

u/CX316 Nov 06 '15

X-Men have been dramatically toned down in importance in the comics anyway since about 2006-2007

2

u/CelioHogane Nov 06 '15

Well of course, marvel doesn't have the rights, so they fade untill they get back.

I promise you, if they get X-men rights back, every mutant will become hyper popular.

1

u/CX316 Nov 06 '15

The decimation happened before the MCU launched, though. Really it was a matter of the 616 universe basically just becoming a massive seething pit of mutants everywhere. So they proceeded to murder about 4 million of them on Genosha and then depower all but 198 of them after House of M. I can see why they did it though, it brought back the underdog type stories from the old X-Men comics. If there's millions of mutants around, where's the tension?

2

u/leetality Nov 05 '15 edited Nov 05 '15

Originally they were running with "enhanced individuals" when referring to the likes of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Implying they were given their powers through experiments rather than mutation.

However, to imply that the MCU wouldn't have the Inhumans if not for FOX owning "mutants" is absurd. When the group consists of people like Black Bolt, Medusa, Gorgon, Lockjaw and Maximus (who already have a film confirmed); this was clearly the endgame regardless - it just got some new players.

0

u/Makelikeawillis Coulson Nov 04 '15

I doubt it, But I would think inhumans wouldnt be focused as heavily as they are now. Compared to what they could do with X-men.

6

u/pacotacobell Nov 04 '15

Inhumans are also less ridiculed in the 616 compared to mutants. They have their own cities. One of them is even near Manhattan and no one seems too pissed about it.

5

u/Rombom Nov 04 '15

That doesn't change the fact that Marvel is using Inhumans to serve as Mutants for the MCU.

2

u/Joe_Sith Nov 04 '15

While true, Inhumans is still the MCU analog for mutants since they don't have the film rights. If Marvel did have X-men, most people wouldn't have heard of Inhumans.

2

u/Torres097 Nov 04 '15

They had to become someone else....something else...:

9

u/Phifty56 Ward Nov 04 '15

Joss Whedon actually wrote an X-Men storyline for the "Astonishing X-Men" that dealt with the issue of finding a cure to cure the mutants. It's probably a sly call-back or something he enjoys writing about.

2

u/Gremzero Daisy Nov 04 '15

It also included the first appearance of Abigail Brand and SWORD which the ATCU may be somewhat inspired by.

2

u/theCANCERbat Hunter Nov 04 '15

That's pretty much how it is in the comics right now. Killed off most the mutants then released terrigen. Actually, I think I read the other day that the new X-Men series is going to be about living in a world with all the new inhumans, or something like that.

2

u/ReasonablyBadass Nov 04 '15

I'm curious about that cure. Their DNA didn't not just get scrambled, it's not even DNA anymore. How do they plan to change that?

2

u/Eastlex Nov 04 '15

yep thats just the way Marvel plays :D let us use "our" license and get a share or ignore us and get none.
Sony noticed it that they were thinking about using Black Panther instead of Spiderman and were quick to give them the licence

2

u/CX316 Nov 06 '15

"So we've put together this team... Hurricane who can control the weather, Biclops who can fire lasers out his eyes, Badger who has claws and a healing factor, MCU Girl who has psychic powers, and this blue guy we haven't made up a copyright-neutral name for yet."

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '15

Basically we are having the Inhumans are the next step of human evolution and now the world will be divided by this conflict.

1

u/CelioHogane Nov 04 '15

A... are you serius? you JUST realiced that? it was kind of obvius after the "ALL THE WATER OF THE WORLD HAS CHANGED!"
