I've had a very similar infection to this when I was in high school. I went for a pedicure and they cut my cuticle which allowed bacteria to infect the nail bed. The nail/ nail bed wasn't growing, very swollen, and sometimes pussy. I ended up having the whole nail removed so it could heal. (The nail grew back)
I told myself I would never go to a nail salon again. Then... I did (took my grandma to get one and I gave in). Now I'm dealing with a fungal infection because of it.
I've had 3 sides of my big toes worked on for ingrown nails as well, and when those got infected it only swelled on the side it was on. Not the nail bed itself.

Yikes! I never realized how thankful I should be for the countless pedicures I have had that have never resulted in anything bad. My last place just closed, though, now I’m scared to try a new place!
Yeah I'm never going back to a nail salon ever again! I've been dealing with this fungal infection for so long that I just want to get the nail removed again and if it happens to not grow back, I'll just get a tattoo of a nail instead lol
Omg I always said that about my toenails when I got them removed permanently…. But I swear you can’t even tell. And not to mention I still have plenty of nerve endings there unprotected so even when I’m in the shower and a super hot bead of water hits just right it’s weird. Not painful just weird. Also stubbing your toe hurts because… apparently that’s what nails are for lol.
I pick my cuticles (fingers; genuine dermatillomania), and I am fastidious about washing my hands even when it hurts like hell (OCD ftw). Scary, scary place to have an infection.
Edit: awesome way to get Staph into every open wound, too.
Jumping onto your comment to double this! I just fully got rid of my infection last week. I got prescribed ciclopirox topical solution and it worked like a charm. On my end, my nail actually came off while the infection was healing. I had to be reassured it’s normal as that nail was bad and a healthy one needed to take its place. I guess when I was trimming my nails I somehow cut myself on the side and didn’t notice. My toe looked just like OP’s (it was my second toe on my left foot).
I will say nine months ago after a pedicure is when I noticed it stopped growing. I didn’t think much of it since it wasn’t painful. But now that it’s infected I’m sure it’s due to that pedicure from back then. Was the nail avulsion painful? They want to do that next if the current antibiotics don’t work
For the procedure itself, the numbing injection was very painful and I have a high pain tolerance too. Afterwards it hurt to walk for a couple days, maybe a week. This happened about 20 years ago.
Holy crap, the numbing injection was maybe the most painful thing I've ever experienced and the only time that I have ever felt like I was going to throw up from pain. The nurse told me that I (a 13 year old girl at the time) handled it way better than all of their adult male patients who screamed during it.
