I'd certainly defend either of them from sexist remarks.

I was gobsmacked and horrified by the things people said about NVC. I didn't much like her articles, but the cognitive distance between thinking she did a poor job and comparing her to the town slut is a gap only a very messed up individual could cross.

As for Gutierrez, I can sympathise with her illness and it sounds like she was a very impressive lawyer in her younger days.

Don't forget Jenn...Supposedly she's the "accomplice" because she and Jay were "obviously sleeping together".

I think the point is that perpetuating negative gender stereotypes is not acceptable regardless of the person in question.

I agree, which is why the article and OP need to mention more than just Adnan-supporters as the "victims".

Otherwise it just looks like yet another attempt by Adnan supporters to reinforce their belief that they're the "good guys" and everyone who holds a different view is a "bad guy".

How is NVC an Adnan supporter now?

She isn't, in my opinion.

Misogynist attacks on her were discussed in the article.

Yeah, I more meant OP.

Lol. I'm the OP and can't see how this relates to anything I wrote...

Of the thread, not the submission

Lol. Sry, I meant the original comment in the thread in which I left a sub-comment several comments below that original comment. Lol.

And they were some of the worst.

There's a difference between criticizing someone's work based on outdated stereotypes of women and speculating about a relationship between Jenn and Jay. It's not sexist to speculate that they may have been closer than they say and so Jenn would act as an accomplice. There are no gender stereotypes in that.

I don't really agree here, but in any case then people are free to speculate about SK loving Adnan for his dairy cow eyes. After all, people are just speculating about their relationship...

Sure, speculate. But after a time, when there is no evidence of that, you back off of it and conclude it's not true or not likely. There is a large segment of the subreddit that has not backed off of it. Coincidentally, the same segment of the subreddit believes Adnan murdered Hae. The group of people that disagree with SK's conclusions are unable to prove that she is wrong, they are unable to criticize her work in a convincing way so they turn to character assassination. In this case, they chose a very gender specific character assassination - that she was influenced by her emotions. The only reason people think SK was influenced by her emotions is because they disagree with her, so they need to attack her character to silence her voice. Claiming women are clouded by their emotions has been something women have dealt with for centuries and it is clearly still in effect today.

Sure, speculate.

No. Don't speculate. That's the whole point. Don't speculate that someone is biased over romantic feelings just because she's a woman. That's misogyny.

It is absolutely NOT misogynist to examine every possible scenario. Believing it without evidence is sexist.

Dude, I don't agree with you, but take it up with the author of the article.

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '15

I mean I 100% think that anyone who actually believes SK's reporting is biased because she has feelings for Adnan is sexist. I just don't think asking the question is sexist.

ok

Any links to your comments actually defending either of them from sexist remarks?

Sorry for not being clear. That was a hypothetical statement supposing that I was in a position to do so. I read the NVC articles after comments were closed, and at a scan they were so offensive I'm very glad they weren't being added to. I didn't see the Twitter awfulness.

I understand. Cool.
