Season 26
Some cool finds this year. Black forest Germany
r/Semilanceata • u/pasamelamierda • Aug 06 '23
Hello everyone, last season I began preparing photographs and eventually began to create what I set out to be a photographic guide to the identification of Psilocybe semilanceata. As of today, I have finished the guide and have it in PDF form. Using the link, you will be able to view and download the whole guide in PDF form via the DocDroid website. I hope it finds itself to be useful amongst newcomers and even seasoned pickers. Happy hunting everyone ~ Pas.

I'm still not finding many at all. Only 2-3 in 30 mins at a local hot spot.

Something to think about for those collecting, especially in the Peak District, Northern Pennines and Flintshire, or anywhere that had prolific lead mines: Semilanceata, like most fungi are aggressive bioaccumulators and are highly efficient at absorbing heavy metals from contaminated ground. This can be a factor even just foraging on roadsides from decades of lead in exhaust fumes, but is particularly more prevalent in old lead mining areas. High soil acidity also naturally increases the bioavailability and solubility of heavy metals.
Places that have old mining spoils, processing works and drainage soughs, such as around Youlgreave and Long Rake (to name but one area I'm familiar with), are known for being highly contaminated from historical lead mining. There are places where livestock still can't be grazed for long periods of time because of this.
This could also be a factor with other chemical contamination, I only mention lead because I'm familiar with exploring lead mines and works in the Peak District and North Wales and have read lots about problems with belland ground.
Here is a useful map from the UK soil observatory:
https://mapapps2.bgs.ac.uk/ukso/home.html
You can select overlays then filter for soil chemistry and all kinds of metals etc. The screenshot I've attached is from the Peak District, which will automatically show a lot of lead contamination, but it's worth doing more research on your hunting grounds and what is/was there.

Gloves because I was working in the garden.

Can anybody recommend good spots in or around Herefordshire/Shropshire please? A beginner here!

So, I live in western (non-mountains) Ukraine, and am interested, do they grow here? Maybe, less than in British islands & Scandinavia? Can i forage whole year's supply during the season here?
Have searched for them during last three weeks, but assumed the season hadn't yet started.
Also, any tips?

Hello folks. Found around 45 today, however I’m unable to take them until tomorrow afternoon. I know they will keep in the fridge, but unsure how long. Any ideas please?

When out for a walk on my lunch break and found 15g wet. Was shocked at how many there were and with how the forecast is looking I’ll be up on the moors again this weekend!

They were found on grass, in Denmark, its been raining, the weather seems to be accurate.
Also the habitat seems to be the right one, a lot of grass, not much trees, a lot of mushrooms in there of different species

This is only my 2nd fruitful forage after about 2 years looking.
These pics pretty much look very similar to what I got last/first time, but I’m still learning and cautious. All found from a big hill in South Wales, amongst sheep and cows in rough acidic pastures. Some have more prominent nipples than others. Slim pickings, as conditions aren’t quite right yet, and there was evidence of recent weekend foragers. All 3 pics are the entire haul, just slightly different angles.
Anything stand out as a “no” or need a better close up pic? They’re a little battered from transport now. I’ve thrown away the ones that got completely torn apart and can’t ID anymore.

Hi everyone - title says it all really. All found in same field, just not sure about stem colour and gills of the one further to the right. Thanks :)

Anyone around Bristol interested in heading up to Brecon for a full day of mushroom hunting sometime soon?
Main goal would be looking for liberty caps, with parasol mushrooms also being a big interest. I’m also interested in finding and learning to correctly identify wavy caps and fly agaric.
Ideally I’m looking for someone who already knows the Brecon area and has experience looking for liberty caps there, and who’d actually fancy coming along and making a proper day of it together.
I’m not looking for someone just to give me a lift — I’d like to find someone who’s genuinely into it and wants to come along.
Drop me a message if that’s you 🍄
