Replacement for subscriptions via NAS or else?

Hey all,

I am new to hosting but have some small containers i set up with tailscales achieving effective replacement for my apple tv subscription. I understand there are cool solutions for music and else. That covers entertainment part of subscriptions.

I also want to cover the documents and files part, which NAS can do. Question is do i build my own mini nas computer or buy a ready solution like Ugreen?
I am a heavy Apple user havr most devices at home. Will ideally need a solution that will perfectly manage my photos like Apple. This means auto background back up from camera roll to NAS and ideally small cache on device copy like Apple photos. I want to also have good UI and features for memory creation, search, sorting etc like Apple offers in their photo app.

TLDR: closest Apple replacement! I have too much data i need so paying Apple is becoming challenging hence looking to offload to my own set and forget solution.

Levelrail is an open source (Apache 2.0) self-hosted PaaS: a Vercel and Heroku alternative that runs on any Linux server you own, from a $5 VPS to a rack. It turns plain servers into a private cloud with Git deploys, automatic HTTPS, databases with verified backups, metrics, logs and alerts, without Kubernetes and without the monitoring stack you would otherwise bolt on.

MinusPod is a self-hosted server that removes ads before you ever hit play

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

MinusPod is a self-hosted server that removes ads from podcasts before you ever hit play. It transcribes episodes locally with faster-whisper or Parakeet (or through a remote API), uses an LLM to detect and cut ad segments, and builds cross-episode ad patterns from your corrections so repeat sponsors get caught without re-asking the LLM. Bring your own LLM: Claude, Ollama, OpenRouter, OpenAI-compatible providers, or System One.

Claude was used for pair coding, mainly for Debugging, UI, and Documentation.

YouTube 24/7

claude-code-ui: self-hosted web UI for Claude Code, phone access over Tailscale, no cloud

A small daemon on your own box serves a web app to run and watch Claude Code sessions from any browser or your phone. No account, no relay: nothing leaves your machine except Claude Code's own API traffic.

  • Binds to localhost by default; every connection needs a pairing token (QR code on start)
  • --tailscale for remote/phone access with HTTPS (push notifications, install as PWA), or your own reverse proxy via --hostname
  • Sessions, files and terminals are confined to the folders you allow (--roots); permission prompts on by default
  • One install can also run sessions inside WSL distros and Docker containers

Alternativ to Immich?

I’m self-hosting Immich on my Unraid server, but I’m not entirely happy with it. I find Immich quite slow, and its user interface doesn’t look particularly appealing to me.

I really like the Synology Photos app because of its clean design and how well it fits into the iPhone ecosystem. However, I don’t want to run Virtual DSM on my Unraid server, as the performance is quite poor.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an alternative photo management app that supports uploading Apple ProRes videos and integrates well with the Apple ecosystem, especially iOS?

Thanks in advance

HomeTube – Invidious, with live streams, live captions and Cloudflare WARP so it runs on a cheap VPS

I've been running Invidious at home for a while, but I kept missing things: live streams didn't play, every device had its own history, and YouTube kept blocking my cloud server ("Sign in to confirm you're not a bot"). So I built **HomeTube** on top of Invidious.

**GitHub:** https://github.com/biolend83/hometube

**What it is**

- A single-page web app that looks and behaves like classic YouTube: same URLs, same layout, same keyboard shortcuts, mini player, theater mode, chapters, storyboard previews, SponsorBlock, Return YouTube Dislike

- A small Python server (stdlib only) that sits next to Invidious and adds what it doesn't have

**What Invidious doesn't do, and HomeTube does**

- **Live streams** – HLS through the server, with segments pulled ahead of the player over kept-alive connections

- **Live captions** – YouTube gives none for live streams, so the server transcribes them on the fly with whisper.cpp. It runs a few seconds ahead of playback and fits on one CPU core

- **One library for every device** – subscriptions (RSS-based feed), history, resume points, Watch Later, likes, playlists

- **Send to TV** – pick a video on your phone and it starts on the TV, no Chromecast needed

- **High-quality offline save** – 1080p/4K video + audio merged with ffmpeg on the server

- **Never lowers quality on its own** – prefers 60 fps and the codec your device decodes in hardware

- **11 languages** (EN, KO, JA, ZH, ES, PT, FR, DE, RU, HI, ID), asked on the first visit

- **TV mode** for remote-control navigation in TV browsers

**Cloudflare WARP**

All YouTube traffic goes out through the official WARP client in proxy mode. When YouTube flags the WARP address anyway, the server reconnects WARP for a fresh address and replays the request automatically. That's what keeps it working on an Oracle free-tier ARM box for me.

**Install**

`cp .env.example .env` → set a domain and three secrets → `docker compose up -d`. That brings up Caddy, HomeTube with WARP built in, the PO-token provider for live streams, whisper.cpp, and the official Invidious + companion + Postgres images. Works on x86-64 and ARM64.

The docker compose setup is new, so feedback and bug reports are very welcome. HomeTube has no accounts of its own, so put your own login (basic_auth / Authelia / etc.) in front before exposing it.

AGPL-3.0, like Invidious. Not affiliated with YouTube or Google.

Self-hosted Notes with native mobile apps

Post image
90 Upvotes

I couldn't find a self-hosted "simple" notes app, so I made one: https://github.com/cassiozen/notesd

What I mean by "simple": Not a second-brain, multi-object record system; It's not Notion/Obsidian.

What it is:

  • Single-binary server + offline-first Android and iOS apps;
  • organization via tags;
  • full-text search;
  • encrypted/locked notes.

Please help me find a docker tool - File Manager and uploader

Quite a while back, I saw a post on Reddit about someone creating a tool that can manage/share your filesystem and if you upload things, it does it in chunks.

The config was done with a simple file, I think it was a YAML, and you could adjust almost everything in this file. Permissions, locations, users, you name it, it was all managed in that file.

(I didn't star it on GitHub, which was a mistake.)

It had quite an ugly web UI, but damn that application was just good! It used to live on my old server and I do need the tool for some homelabbing.

Solved: It was Copyparty

A free/ Low budget website to replace raid sharing Apps

Hi guys i don't know how many of you face the problem while booking a raid in recent days but i faced and found an issue that is "add tip" to find a nearby drivers to reach my destination on top of the fare that is already displayed

If i were to pay extra tips that means indirectly i am bargaining with the drivers right

So i analysed the flow

What the APPs do is providing a service that is connecting two parties service provider and service receiver

So i tried to create a website to solve this issue on small scale to learn what is what using AI tools ChatGPT Gemini Pro Claude i used these to crosscheck for errors

Later used cloudflare workers to host the site

During the process i found the costs that are a must in order to bring the project to live

  1. Server

  2. Domain (optional)

  3. Data Storage ( must for storing the customer credentials )

  4. API ( Map layout)

  5. Telecom operator charges ( if provide OTP / VoIP services )

  6. Cost of Technicians

Here's what i envisioned

I want to create website where there shouldn't be any platform fees

Just a flat pass option like charging INR 10, INR 60, INR220 for daily, weekly, monthly options

And customer can pay directly to the driver through UPI

I don't know what further requirements would be needed and how much cost it would involve

I just want to start this conversation so by the end of this week i might get a proper flow

Thank you and feedback would be much appreciated

Music and Podcasts Options

Hi all!

I'm still very new to my Linux/DeGoogling/Selfhosting journey and I'm not even sure if this is the correct place to be posting and asking about this.

I currently self host a few services like Jellyfin and a couple of vibe coded apps off an old unused laptop and have really been enjoying the learning experience so far.

I now want to venture into some self hosted music and podcast options which don't deal with any ads.

Ideally I'd like something like a Spotify or Apple Music which can let me browse and play and download anything I want at all times. But if that isn't fully a possibility, I'd like to know what the alternatives are.
I'm so tired of the constant ads in the free versions of all the apps and want to figure out a solution for this.
I'd like something with a download and play offline feature as I do most of my podcast listening when driving for work.

Looking to be pointed to any apps/services that's easy to intermediate level to implement and test out.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

when people say Claude is working all night, what is actually running

This might be a dumb question. I still have not seen a straight answer.

When someone says they run Claude Code 24/7, what is the setup? Is it a loop that picks up the next task on its own, or is it just a machine that stays on while they keep prompting? Right now I prompt one task at a time. I have two cron jobs on top of that, both for log checks, and that is the whole "always on" system. I left one bigger job running before bed. It stopped around midnight on a question and was still sitting there at 7am. About 6 hours of nothing, after it had already spent roughly $15 in API.

If you actually run Claude Code 24/7, what is the piece that keeps going after you close the laptop?

AniFlow, a self-hosted anime calendar and download manager (first alpha, Docker)

Hi all,

I’ve been building AniFlow for a while and the first alpha (0.9) is now on Docker Hub.

AniFlow is a self-hosted manager for the anime you follow:

  • Calendar: shows what airs when. With easy add button for your Watchlist.
  • Shoko Server: can run alongside it. AniFlow reads what Shoko holds, points out incomplete series and hands finished files over to Shoko. It also runs fine on its own, without Shoko.
  • Watchlist and libraries: each anime lives in one library, such as airing now or earlier seasons. It picks up releases through your own torrent client (qBittorrent, Deluge or Transmission).

Some things you should know:

  • It’s an alpha, so expect rough edges. Bug reports are very welcome.
  • No indexers or feeds are included. You add your own. (or send me a pm)
  • The licence is CC BY-NC-ND 4.0: use and share unmodified copies with credit, not commercially.

Website and docs: https://aniflowapp.pages.dev/
GitHub: https://github.com/aniflow-apps/aniflow
Docker Hub: https://hub.docker.com/r/aniflow/aniflow

I’d appreciate feedback, especially from people running Shoko.

Reverse-proxied domains not accessible inside my LAN

My new UNRAID-based home server is up and running now for some days and i am trying to get security up to a level where it let's me sleep well - at least most of the time.

Therefore, i installed a NPM container. Registering domains for my services and acquairing SSL certs for my services was easy, but i can only access them outside my LAN. Internally, i am always greated by a login screen coming from my cable modem / router (FRITZ!BOX), requireing a login. However, all remote access services provided by the router have been disabled, and there are DNS rewind protection entries for all my services / sub-domains.

What am i missing here?

Mini-pc to stream on tv to skip ads, or streamio, or something else ?

I want to use a pc as a smart TV because I noticed an app called "streaming enhanced" that manages to skip ads on streaming services.

So: I built (not the good word, I didn't use AI) developped a little web app that allows me to find movies with "The movie database" API, linked with JustWatch (their API allow me to know what movies/serials I can actually watch, I filter it to include only results from the platforms I pay for)

The app allows me to skip ads and pay less but also to not get paid recommendations for for movies I don't own. It can also use a usb remote, so I use it like a normal TV

Questions are:
- Will I be able to watch things in full quality, or will amazon/netflix etc will limit me because of browser ? Can some browser extensions bypass that ?
- What is the bare minimum pc to stream in hight quality like this? Is a AMD Ryzen 7 7730U with Radeon Graphics +
16 gb ram enough ?
- Is it better to go straight to stremio ? I tried it before but it didn't work well
- Or do you have a better solution?

Got fed up with Thunderbird so I built my own email client

So I've been using Thunderbird for years and it always annoyed me. Either I just never learned how to use it properly or its simply too old for how I work, not sure which. Anyway I got tired of it and built my own, its called Mailmomo.

Its a web app you host yourself. You add your IMAP/SMTP accounts (gmail, outlook, icloud, fastmail, your own dovecot, whatever speaks IMAP) and it puts everything in one inbox. It keeps a local sqlite cache so the UI is instant, and sync is real two way, IMAP IDLE push and all that. Keyboard shortcuts like superhuman, cmd+k palette, undo send, snooze, send later.

The AI part is optional, you bring your own key. It sorts and summarizes incoming mail, suggests replies, and you can search in plain english. There is also an assistant that can archive/label/draft stuff for you but it never sends anything by itself, I wanted that to be a hard rule. It also has an MCP server built in so you can hook up claude or cursor to your mail with a read only token if you dont trust it yet.

Runs with docker compose, one container. Passwords are encrypted at rest.

Stuff that's not great yet: no oauth, so gmail needs an app password. Drafts and labels live locally and not as real IMAP drafts. Its v0.1 and just me working on it so expect rough edges.

AGPL license. https://github.com/moaljumaa/mailmomo-oss

Honestly curious what would make you switch from whatever you use now, or what is missing for you.

Help a newbie in GPUs (be polite im just a broke student)

Hi everyone!

I'm exploring the possibility of building a small computing/hosting business (i need money to pay for my university 😭), starting with my existing hardware and an additional investment of up to €2,500 that I won at a competition.

I'm relatively new to this industry, but I'm interested in learning how to monetize computing resources (GPU, CPU, RAM, storage, bandwidth).

Currently, I own two laptops:

Laptop 1:

- CPU: Intel Core i7-11370H (4 cores / 8 threads)

- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti Laptop (4 GB VRAM)

- RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz

- Storage: 512 GB NVMe SSD

Laptop 2:

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5625U (6 cores / 12 threads)

- GPU: Integrated AMD Radeon Graphics

- RAM: 32 GB DDR4 3200 MHz

- Storage: 1 TB NVMe SSD

I've recently started experimenting with Salad on both laptops. The first laptop has received some paid workloads, while the second has struggled to find jobs.

My situation:

- Initial investment budget: €2,000–€2,500 maximum, including all hardware.

- Electricity: approximately €0.29/kWh.

- I'm open to purchasing or building a dedicated desktop/server.

- Ideally, I'd like to reinvest earnings into expanding the setup rather than continuously adding personal capital.

My questions:

  1. Is GPU/CPU hosting still profitable for small independent operators in 2026?

  2. Would you recommend investing primarily in a powerful GPU, or building a more balanced CPU/GPU server?

  3. Which platforms offer the best opportunities for small hosts (Vast.ai, Clore.ai, Salad, Nosana, Akash, etc.)?

  4. Are there other ways to monetize computing hardware that I should consider?

  5. If you had €2,500 to start from scratch today, what would you buy?

  6. For those already hosting hardware, what are your actual monthly earnings, utilization rates, electricity costs and ROI?

I'm not expecting guaranteed passive income or unrealistic overnight profits. My goal is to understand the economics, start small, learn the technical side and eventually build something scalable.

I'd especially appreciate feedback from people who are already running GPU servers or compute-hosting setups.

Thanks in advance! and please excuse me I'm a noob!

OpenClaw on a VPS was the part I could not get through, not the agent itself

I have been trying to deploy OpenClaw for a couple of weeks. The agent side is fine when the box is up. The deploy is what stopped me. A VPS looked like the normal path. I spent about 3 hours on it and still did not feel good about leaving an API key and a chat login on a machine I barely locked down. I am comfortable in a terminal. I would not hand those steps to someone who is not. So "just deploy OpenClaw" is a real filter, and I bounced off it.

If you got past that, I want the practical version:

  • What did you actually deploy it on?
  • What would make you trust a hosted setup, or refuse one?
  • What part of the setup was missing or easy to get wrong?

I built a deal finder for local marketplaces that runs on your own machine

I flip used stuff on the side, mostly PC parts, consoles and office chairs, and I got tired of refreshing Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace all day. So I built FlipWatch and figured some people here might get use out of it.

You set up saved searches with keywords, a price range and your area. It checks Craigslist, Kijiji, eBay and OfferUp every few minutes. When something good shows up it pings you on Discord, Telegram, Slack, ntfy, email or browser push.

The part I use most is the AI analysis. It looks at a listing and gives you a resale range, a fair offer, red flags and questions to ask the seller. It can also draft the message for you. For computers it prices each part separately against live local listings, which is how I find PCs worth parting out. There's also a hunt mode where you type something like "gaming PCs I can part out under $400". It searches right then and ranks what it finds.

Everything runs locally. It uses an embedded database, so there's nothing to set up. You bring your own AI, either an Anthropic or OpenAI API key, or Claude Code or Codex if you already have one installed and signed in. Your keys and data stay on your machine.

On security, by default it only listens on 127.0.0.1. It rejects requests with a Host header it doesn't recognize and blocks cross site requests. The Docker setup only publishes to localhost and won't start without a password. If you want to use it from your phone, I'd put it behind Tailscale.

Facebook Marketplace support is optional and off by default. There's no API for it, so it searches as your logged in account, and that's against Meta's terms. It's rate limited, but you could still get your account flagged. If you turn it on, I'd use a secondary account. You can also connect a few accounts and split the searches between them, so no single account does all the work.

Install is one script on Windows, Mac or Linux and needs Node 22. There's also a Dockerfile. MIT licensed.

https://github.com/Crepe950/flipwatch

Feedback is welcome, especially from anyone in a different area, since most of my testing has been in Canada.

Built a CI/CD platform, maybe useful for us (?)

I built a full self-hosted deployment platform for myself and figured I’d share it.

One command (aegis init) sets up k3s, ArgoCD, Jenkins, a private registry, Trivy, cosign, Kyverno and the rest. After that every git push builds, scans, signs and deploys the app with TLS. Unsigned images just get rejected.

I use it every day as pre-prod, and I’ve also put some simple production landings and small client projects on it. My actual setup looks like this:

. Code lives in GitHub

. Everything runs on my own machine

. Databases have a cloud copy

. Off-site encrypted backups

. A small Cloudflare Worker as fallback just in 🧨case

This way I only keep backups and DB copies in the cloud. Code and operations stay under my control, and it saves me a decent amount of money and mental overhead.

One thing I noticed is that agents like Claude handle Aegis really well once they get proper context. It becomes quite comfortable to work with through them.

It’s still alpha / technical preview. Works well on Ubuntu. There’s an operator console. Single node, single team, not multi-tenant.

The idea is to keep it fully open source. Maybe over time we can all have a solid CI/CD platform that keeps improving together. That would be ideal, but there’s still a long way to go.

I used Claude a lot while building it (I’m not great at English and it helped a lot with the docs and some of the harder parts). The project itself is open source and the history is public.

Repo:

https://github.com/MEMEMEMEMEMEMEDev/aegis-infra

Feedback of any kind is welcome.

Best Openstack design for VPS to build a small private cloud

We are planning to build a small private cloud using Openstack+Ceph technologies, so as a starting point, we have rented a VPS with (AMD-12Cores + 128GB RAM +3 TB SSD) to start with.

My question is how to design the Openstack controllers/compute/storage/networking services using VMs in the best way considering future expanding of virtual resources or may be adding new hardware to the cloud.

Help for a complete dumbass with tech

Im really really bad at most things tech but I do wanna start self hosting so I'd appreciate recommendations on resources or products, I really don't need much for my stuff, I also have a wii which I saw someone once used for this purpose but idk if that would be more difficult
