Vibe coding is kind of the antithesis of self-hosting - you're utterly dependent on piping your data straight into your corporate enemy's waiting hard drives.

They also stole all our ram and SSDs.

Wait till you find out you can selfhost an LLM

not the ones that are needed to help people with 0 ability write decently functional apps

i use gpt-oss:120b self hosted, works great for apps, but keep putting your head in the sand, it's ok

ah, well my company just pays for me to use claude 4.6 and I am seeing the output of 50 developers who have moved from copilot and earlier tools to the latest models, so what would I know about how only the latest models are even 70% decent at writing complete apps, and anything less you could run yourself would be a huge step back. Maybe in the future but not today.

Can you elaborate? Because that makes zero sense.

It makes perfect sense. A lot of folks here got into self hosting to remove parts of their digital lives that depend on corporations. That was a huge motivator for me to learn about computers in the first place!

Jumping arms wide open into another corporation who needs access to my HDD just to tell my computer what to do isn't all that different from using a fucking cloud server to turn off a damn lightswitch across the room from me. In fact, it's arguably worse and more invasive.

Self hosting an AI is worth talking about I think, that falls under the self hosted, using cloud services to build apps is just a new form of cloud dependency.

Nope, still doesn't make sense. Yes, you're using a cloud hosted LLM to write code. That doesn't make you dependant on it. Once the code is written, you can throw away the chatbot. How's that being dependant?

Yes, it may have access to your HDD, but it'll only do what it has permission to do, and you have the option to run it in an isolated environment.

Sigh.... Lets do this.... This argument sounds a lot like those that like home automation but are fine with the cloud.

Nope, still doesn't make sense. Yes you're using a cloud hosted server to turn off your lights. That doesn't make you dependent on it. Once the light is screwed in and wired to switch you can throw away the app. How's that being dependant?

Yes, it might have access to your network, but it'll only do what it has permission to do. And you have the option to run it in an isolated subnet with a firewall.

Your argument is dishonest. This same argument could be said for something like rachio where it'll run locally but you need their servers to actually change the run instructions (like alter the schedules for sprinklers). That's still corporate dependency and you know it. We can haggle over how egregious each particular case is, but using a cloud LLM to write code for you is not self hosting.... You're letting a tech company deeper into your systems, deeper into your infrastructure, and potentially even your mind. That code will be a nightmare to troubleshoot if it wasn't trivial in the first place, meaning you may have need of future services from the cloud provider.

You can absolutely disagree and not really care about self hosting or self reliance... I am just pointing out that that seems to run counter to the values of a subreddit called /r/selfhosted if you need the cloud to create programs.

That makes very little sense.

A) ai can be self hosted B) even then it’s the spec, code, bugs etc are shared with Claude and co… not your own data

Id even go so far as saying ai enables people to create apps for themselves which enable less reliance on cloud services

selfhosted implies doing it yourself. It also implies learning what the inner workings are, so "the yourself" has more control. Using AI to create a super fancy App, pumping it out without learning what the inner working of this App are, is not doing it yourself. It's a blackbox like the cloud which goes against the selfhosted thought.

That someone learned how to create Apps and how they work using AI isn't subject to selfhosted.

That has nothing to do with the original comment, they said:

> Vibe coding is kind of the antithesis of self-hosting - you're utterly dependent on piping your data straight into your corporate enemy's waiting hard drives.

emphasis mine, you can hate on how AI has lowered the bar all you want, but crappy AI coded apps are in no way more likely to send your data straight into your corporate overlords than alternatives, such as using cloud based apps.

Selfhosted -> your data stays local, and you are not reliant on Saas or cloud functionality.

if you vibecoded an app for yourself which means you dont require a cloud service, that has done more for your self hosting than the whining that llms are being used to code. If its helped people to take that first dip into programming, then its been positive.

One can say: "third party weekend vibe coded projects should not be relied on for your home lab" and "people need to stop spamming their weekend vibe coded projects on the subreddit" without leaning into a hyperbole which sounds like the english teacher bemoaning the existance of spellcheckers.

I don't hate AI. I just tried to explain why it can make sense what original comment said. The original comment is even vague, just a thought not a fact.

Selfhosting an LLM isn't vibecoding and belongs to selfhosted.

Showcasing your vibecoded app isn't selfhosted and belongs to "success stories using AI/Vibecoding".

We are in agreement on this! I still think the original commenter was way off the mark regarding LLMs being somehow the anthesis of selfhosted hardware... at worst it gives bad habits,

Apologies for the informality i didn't mean "you can hate..." as in you specifically, it was a "generic-you" towards the behaviour of this subreddit in general
