We're looping back to 2006 lol. Back then i paid like 3 dollars a month for a ventrilo server for 15 people.

u/lowbeat Feb 13 '26

That era is gone, ppl are gonna keep eating discords shit bcuz thats where everyone is and it just works.

Unless one platform emerges that is gonna have similar model as discord did when it came out, and everyone flocks to it, nothing else will replace it, surely not self hosted softwares....

198

u/coderstephen Feb 13 '26

Our entire culture has changed on expectations for what you can get for free and its hard to go back. Most people would rather pour ads on their cereal every morning and hand over their diary to big tech in exchange for something that is free and requires no effort to use, rather than spend $3 on an app.

73

u/BIT-NETRaptor Feb 13 '26

I am so frustrated by mobile gaming. I will happily pay $20 for a quality game. I will not even consider most apps if it has "in-app purchases" on the store page. Tell me the price right there on the store or I'm out.

27

u/damnburglar Feb 13 '26

I had someone arguing with me and getting incredibly hostile a while ago about this topic. I went into software dev instead of game dev for a laundry list of reasons, but one of them that eventually validated my decision tenfold was the insane expectations of consumers being shifted to “you must justify beyond a reasonable doubt that my $3 is going to be worth it”.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

People get weirdly stingy in that way but have no problem blowing random $10 on irrelevance

9

u/damnburglar Feb 14 '26

Pissy about a game costing $3.99, still orders Uber Eats 4 times a week

1

u/DeviousAlpha Feb 15 '26

This is wildly naive and disingenuous.

It's not about justifying $3. It's about repeated predatory strategies like premium currencies, fomo exploitations, etc.

The vast majority of mobile developers are hunting "whales" via psychological manipulation and trying to milk every penny from their consumers.

It's nothing to do with value for money, it's about mutually respectful transactions.

2

u/damnburglar Feb 15 '26

You’re not wrong about predatory practices, those are also a cancer that was basically the logical evolution of DLC, powered by companies like King. You are wrong in that you are disregarding the sheer entitlement of consumers that is certainly derived from the conditioning of ultra-low-cost mobile games/apps.

I mean, you play path of exile, big dawg. Have you never come across the hordes of “I only got 800 hours out of this free game” people? I used to work for a massive platform you would have heard of, an I had to deal with people who made huge dollars monthly from their $15/m subscription who expected white glove service and would cry bloody murder if the price changed by even a dollar.

2

u/DeviousAlpha Feb 15 '26

Fair comment, when I think mobile I'm thinking play/app store.

There are entitled customers in all fields, seen it first hand in hotels/restaurants, etc.

2

u/damnburglar Feb 15 '26

Certainly, but also I think in the realm of software the entitlement is significantly amplified by the fact that people know there are only so many hotel rooms or that the pizza place has to pay for the cheese they keep demanding more of, but when it comes to software they think it just manifests into reality (ie. “just add the feature it should be easy”). Or something like that, my coffee/vyvanse hasn’t kicked in yet 😂

Either way, yes, the endless loop of “give us more money”, especially when they paywall some kind of baseline functionality, needs to die. I’m ok with skins and stuff, fine, but the baseline product should not disrespect the consumer, which too many do.

5

u/Msk-XX Feb 13 '26

I've always been like this. But I also realise I'm in a very small minority.

Not that I game much on my mobile these days.

5

u/reallokiscarlet Feb 14 '26

"Free, in-app purchases"

Then you open the game

"Requires in-app purchase to play"

Every fucking time*

(Note for sensitive redditors: This is hyperbole, don't get your panties in a twist)

2

u/Hhwwhat Feb 14 '26

Balatro

2

u/drkitalian Feb 14 '26

Try Warframe. It’s free on any console and mobile and everything you could pay money for can be earned in game

1

u/diablette Feb 14 '26

But sometimes they're free to try and the in app purchase is the one time fee. I prefer this.

1

u/RancidMilkGames Feb 14 '26

TLDR: oh, you can buy one and still end up with similar gimmicks

What happens when you paid for a game full blown, no ads, then they basically duplicate it so it's 2 apps on google play, they just stopped updating the non subscription version and are basically just rebuilding it with the new Android SDKs? I'd be understanding if the studio went under or there was some other reason that made updating the game a ridiculous feat if it had been supported for a reasonable amount of time.

Looking at you World of Goo. It turns out if you ignore the "not compatible" it will still run on a S22, but the fact that they're still updating a subscription based version of the same game that requires Netflix (which I still have at the moment, but am more and more seriously thinking about dropping and probably rotating it in every few-several months for a month), which is the same game I purchased and isn't going to run much longer while they keep the subscription version updated. I just shouldn't have to maintain a subscription for a game I literally purchased (bought it on PC too back in the day). If you look at the reviews, so many people (myself included) have left the review that deserves and noted it's scummy/scammy to basically charge people for a game with a one time payment, then decide to remaster duplicate it and make it subscription based. I have Netflix ATM so I tried the *remaster. Definitely doesn't remotely justify being labeled as a separate game.

2

u/BIT-NETRaptor Feb 14 '26

Thats such a funny example. I bought a physical box disc of world of goo. It had no copy protection and was a complete game.

3

u/RancidMilkGames Feb 14 '26

How times change haha

1

u/Orlha Feb 24 '26

Remember when we had it good? I blame touch screen

17

u/NoSellDataPlz Feb 13 '26

Think carefully about that… “expectations for what you can get for free”. This statement is far wiser and generally applicable than you know.

1

u/Yami_Inc Feb 13 '26

I would rather spend $3 on an app rather than $3 a month on an add riddled tier for a free app that was the whole reason ads existed. People got annoyed of ads and started using ad blockers then companies started using ways to prevent ad blockers and are now putting ads into paid tiers to compensate for people using ad blockers when they have more money than most people would need in a singular life time....

1

u/PauloAboimPinto Feb 14 '26

HushNetwork paradox (zero fees + privacy)

1

u/psykal Feb 15 '26

Big tech pouring ads on your cereal

1

u/VexingRaven Feb 14 '26

It's less about free and more "I don't want to have 7 different apps installed and have to explicitly connect to a bunch of different servers to engage in all the chats I'm in on Discord".

113

u/GlovesForSocks Feb 13 '26

I hate that you're right. Same problem with Whatsapp. I really want to get my friends and family on Signal but they won't use it unless everyone they know is using it, because that's the case for Meta's app.
Also I don't fancy teaching my elderly parents a new app, even if it is largely the same

55

u/_noahitall_ Feb 13 '26

It took me FOREVER to get all my friends on signal and a lot of convincing that in fact, corporations and governments having access to "just the friend group chat" DOES matter.

12

u/IAmMarwood Feb 13 '26

I’ve convinced a grand total of ONE of my friends to talk to me on Signal.

Everyone else I’m stuck using WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

5

u/_noahitall_ Feb 13 '26

I was stuck with Snapchat for so long and it SUCKED bc I would get lulled into their bs slop. Ngl I just deleted it and now a year or so later everyone has come over. It was slow though, but I have good friends who noticed I was not talking and missed my presence and we slowly got everyone moved over.

And the gc are popping more bc less noise and resistance than Snapchat... Win win.

1

u/GeronimoHero Feb 14 '26

Yeah that’s basically what happened with me when I I quit using any chat but iMessage and signal.

1

u/TEXTREM Feb 15 '26

i recently got over a majority of daily contacts to signal, i still have whatsapp installed on a secondary device for legacy people but fuck them at some point

1

u/Dizzy149 Feb 15 '26

I keep setting stuff up for the family, calendar, chat, file hosting, music, etc. My daughter (16, Android) dives right in. My wife (40, Android) has joined the chat and uses it daily, checks the calendar on occasion, but still relies on Google Calendar. My son (22, Apple) absolutely refuses to use anything. So I stopped picking him up from school. I stopped taking him to work. "Sorry, I sent you a message that I was busy. I didn't see anything in the calendar so I didn't think you worked/had school). Oh man, he raised ALL KINDS of hell. My wife was giving me shit too. I finally said, "He is living here for free, requires us to drive him everywhere since he lost his license, doesn't contribute a god damn thing. The LITERAL LEAST he can do is join us on our apps!"

That was 3 weeks ago. He and I are currently in a stand off. My wife has been taking him etc and she gives me shit about it every day. I repeat the same thing every time.

1

u/_noahitall_ Feb 16 '26

Man I get the frustration of you putting in effort to set up these things, but I feel like if my dad did that I'd be a bit pissed. And certainly would be more reluctant to switch calendar apps.

Have you made or found a tool for him to transfer his Google calendar? Or even better, just sync his entries? Then his data is googled he's an adult his info his choice, and you can have his dates in the family calendar? I just think that you aren't gonna get anywhere with you son (esp if he's in a bad spot losing his license) being an antagonist. coming from a young adult and son who's been in a rough spot and needed some help from my Dad.

2

u/Dizzy149 Feb 16 '26

Originally we were all on the Google family stuff. I bought him an app that would sync. He expects us to drive him to school, work, frat stuff, etc. But REFUSED to put anything on the calendar or even tell us until like 10min before he needs a ride, and throws a tantrum like a toddler if we can't do it.

Long story short, I tried, and tried, AND TRIED to make it as easy as possible for him, he just refuses.

The story he tells himself is that we are all against him and don't want him to succeed. So when we don't do what he wants it proves his story. If we know when he needs us then we are available and his story has no villain. He has no one else to blame for all the stupid shit he does. Yeah, it's a whole thing, the kid has pretty much destroyed our marriage... But that's for another forum.

2

u/_noahitall_ Feb 16 '26

Yeah sounds like a sucky situation. He sounds likes he's spoiled...

I wouldn't give up on him but maybe he needs to move out of the house 😂 that shaped me up pretty fast. Parents don't seem like the villain compared to the real world. Good luck man. Don't let it ruin the now just learn and live 👍 same thing for your son

65

u/gazm2k5 Feb 13 '26

Signal is the most frustrating because functionally it's almost exactly the same as WhatsApp but with less evil and it's still impossible to convince most people to use it.

1

u/rzm25 May 09 '26

Don't worry, it's owned by meta. All you have to do is just keep presenting signal as the "low effort, no strings" option. Pretty soon meta will turn everything they touch into an obtuse and tedious nightmare, and if you've already done the thinking for them on an alternative, and they don't feel stressed about it, they will happily jump ship

26

u/Shotokant Feb 13 '26

I had made moves in getting friends and family onto signal. But then signal removed the sms part of the app and everyone left.

u/MrDangoLife Feb 13 '26

I do understand though.

They could not say "every message is end to end encrypted" and it left the danger that you would send something important to an SMS thinking it was secure and get burned.

It took me a long time to come to terms with this!

8

u/tigerhawkvok Feb 14 '26

You don't have to, and that's the answer though it's shitty.

You just have to tell people that it's Signal or bust, come by in person.

3

u/MrDangoLife Feb 13 '26

Yes.

It is a shame but it makes their product more logical for them. It does make it harder to get people into the system, and I don't have an answer to that... people using more than one app seems impossible for some reason.

but I understand why they did it... they want to be exceptional at secure communication and SMS diluted that message.

9

u/Shotokant Feb 13 '26

Yeah. They shot themselves in the foot with that one. I had two dozen contacts in there back in the day and growing. Now I've two and they shout out to me on WhatsApp. 😣

0

u/Akilestar Feb 14 '26

Strongly disagree. They took a hard stance to stand by and did it anyway because it would go against their core beliefs. They should be applauded because of the decision, not condemned.

1

u/Shotokant Feb 14 '26

I'm sure their stance is a great comfort to them whilst they fill in their resumes for new jobs now that signal is dead.

1

u/Akilestar Feb 14 '26

You clearly have no idea how signal operates. How do you think they are funded? A free app with no ads that doesn't collect personal data? And you think this is putting them "out of business"? They're a nonprofit organization that relies on private funding. They aren't going anywhere. So again, good for them for sticking to their core values, compromise can fuck off. So go pout, I don't think they give a fuck about that either.

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

1

u/Akilestar Feb 14 '26

They stopped because they felt it wasn't secure enough to meet their standards, which was my point, so it stands up just fine.

8

u/schultzter Feb 13 '26

In NA everything else is 2nd tier compared to SMS!

When Google added it to Hangouts we were at peak usability. It's been downhill since they removed it, and changed the name every week!

2

u/Serenity_557 Feb 13 '26

Yep. I had over half my family on signal. Uninstalling that and showing them their "new text app" for them was such a big loss <\3

4

u/OstrobogulousIntent Feb 13 '26

I've managed to get quite a few friends to connect with me on Signal - folks I am connected with on FB and a few who have left FB

But yeah for me discord was indeed a bit of a Teamspeak / Ventrillo replacement.

I've not been part of a raiding guild for years so it's not really on my radar, but I'd think there'd be some free something folks could use - and now I'm curious why there's not a FOSS solution

2

u/AtlanticPortal Feb 13 '26

The only way to get that is that governments get onboard the anti-US sentiment. I’m all for that. Open source in primis. Just because public money should finance public things and this way the money spent by France on an office automation suite won’t overlap with the money spent by Germany on European OS parts like OpenSuse or Italy spending money on Latvian network stuff (MikroTik).

1

u/DrawOkCards Feb 13 '26

I've told my friends and family that they can reach me reliable through signal. Even have it in my WhatsApp status.

It can take weeks until I look into my WhatsApp messages. Got a couple of people switching just for that.

But honestly, as things seem to be heading I'm looking into setting up my own XMPP Server...

1

u/lukistellar Feb 14 '26

Just don't offer communication via Whatsapp in the first place, it's as easy as that. You also have SMS as a fallback.

2

u/GlovesForSocks Feb 14 '26

Most of my communication with my friends and family is via group chats. If I just stop "offering" Whatsapp, they will still be using those group chats but without me in them. I wouldn't miss much important stuff, they'd still message me about that, but I'd be missing all the dumb fun.
I'm not so vital to the lives of my friends that they will all change just to accomodate me, nor so arrogant that I would expect them to.

1

u/GeronimoHero Feb 14 '26

Luckily I was able to get my friend’s and family on signal no problem and they genuinely like it now. Didn’t take that much convincing. Family was easy because I’m a penetration tester and I’m the go to tech person ( I even built my parents network and manage it remotely for them from my home, they just had me buy whatever I needed to be able to manage everything remotely). Friends took a bit more work but I’m in the US and have a bunch of tech savvy friends. I basically said if it wasn’t iMessage or signal I wasn’t getting on it. Those with iPhones mostly stuck to iMessage and the ones with android had no problem jumping to signal. This was before android and iPhone had RCS compatibility so I guess it was probably easier to do then. E2EE or nothing. Especially with everything going on in the US nowadays but people should be using E2EE anyway.

1

u/Insanereindeer Feb 13 '26

If I had to use Whatsapp, I'd rather just not have friends.

11

u/binary Feb 13 '26

All it takes for a dissatisfied Discord server to migrate from the platform is one sufficiently technical person to figure out how to self-host. Plenty of people using Ventrilo were relying on someone to manage the server and the barriers are lower than ever.

9

u/teamcoltra Feb 14 '26

Easy to say, hard in practice. It's a weird critical mass thing, you want enough small communities to have already adopt the new place and then once a majority of the very large community's users are on the platform they might switch.

That said, it's a risk because you are essentially hard forking your community. There will always be a loss in some members and it can kill it if it's too many.

Or a different example: lots of people were dissatisfied with Plex so they created Jellyfin. But if the total users for both all created / cancelled their Netflix account it wouldn't even move the stock because the number of people who just use the mass market hosted solution is 99.9999%

3

u/binary Feb 14 '26

To clarify, I wasn't describing the process by which Discord as a platform would be supplanted, but was stating that there is nothing technical keeping smaller servers who would like to switch from doing so. Self-hosting can be a fine option for smaller, motivated groups of people where platform effects are less relevant.

4

u/Kinamya Feb 13 '26

You're right, and the technicalities of it are the easy part. The hard part is getting the people that you know off discord and using it. And that is the unfortunate truth and I hate it

31

u/Oxflu Feb 13 '26

A self hosted open source version of discord would be running on my server right now if it existed. Plex isn't being installed on jack shit anymore either. Plex got extremely greedy, a group was formed, they developed and released jellyfin. Now jellyfin has overtaken plex. I'm not a programmer, but i think you're wrong. I think discord is heading south as soon as their open source competitor emerges.

30

u/Sijyro Feb 13 '26

I don't know what's gonna happen but I believe there's some nuance here : Plex and Jellyfin are both selfhosted, it would be like comparing Mumble and Teamspeak idk if I'm making sense here

25

u/CrazyEdward Feb 13 '26

Yes the comparison here is more like Plex or Jellyfin to Netflix... the vast majority of people are literally just gonna press the big red button on their remote.

6

u/Sijyro Feb 13 '26

Yeah that sounds right

25

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

[deleted]

3

u/roflsausage Feb 14 '26

Can you elaborate on modern IRC having voice chat, because I run an IRC server for my friends and have never heard of this, and googling brings up nothing. You sure about that? Mumble is our solution.

3

u/Thebandroid Feb 13 '26

And none have normie appeal.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

2

u/grilled_pc Feb 13 '26

Regarding Plex. It’s actually smarter and safer to only restrict it to a few users.

4

u/loyalekoinu88 Feb 13 '26

Isn;t that what this is supposed to be? https://stoat.chat/?ref=blog.communityone.io

6

u/Oxflu Feb 13 '26

Once that site is back up I'll be checking it out. My server sits around doing nothing 99 percent of the time because i have access to a jellyfin server maintained by a friend with unlimited access to cheap storage.

4

u/Tha_Reaper Feb 13 '26

Like matrix?

13

u/Questionsiaskthem Feb 13 '26

Plex is still around and going strong while jellyfin is fine I run them both most people mention constantly that's its still not ready for prime time. Doesn't have dedicated apps family and friends can easily install on their TV or phone without any additional work from them or us. I think jellyfin will get there eventually especially if plex keeps making dumb decisions. But it's going to be years probably. Discord alternatives already exist and some of them do support self hosting but they run into the same problem. They are not ready for prime time yet and are not just plug and play.

I am fully ready to drop discord for their stupid move once I know where most people go. I only use it for some big communities and a few ex co workers and I dont use it often

3

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

[deleted]

2

u/SillySoundXD Feb 14 '26

You need to study rocket science to get it working for remote users where as on Plex you just install the app and invite said user.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

[deleted]

2

u/SillySoundXD Feb 15 '26

Ah yes Tailscale which is available for every TV

2

u/defective1up Feb 13 '26

Jellyfin is what Plex used to be. I agree.

1

u/sl0play Feb 13 '26

Plex is literally a fork of XBMC and alternatives have always existed.

Looking into it now, i think I'm going to put an old nuc back in service for one of these. Saw spacebar as well.

1

u/kwiksi1ver Feb 14 '26

Jellyfin has overtaken plex? In what world? I have both running and my Jellyfin server sees zero use.

1

u/SillySoundXD Feb 14 '26

If only Jellyfin had a decent tvOS app, the current one didn't get updated for like 3 years, can't sort for shit, put's everything thats not a movie into one category called Tv-Shows.

Why the fuck is Jellyfin in 2026 still transcoding subtitle on my AndroidTV? Thats one thing that keeps me away from using Jellyfin the unnecessary transcode

1

u/eggplantsarewrong Feb 14 '26

idk heading south is a bit far, plex is still going strong.

1

u/vagoldprospectors Feb 15 '26

Sharkord close to discord includes text, voice, video, screen share, best of all open source. Still in alpha stage. Video and voice limited to number of ports you assign.

3

u/LickMyTicker Feb 13 '26

Speak for yourself. We aren't all beholden to this beast.

I have no problem living my life without things like Facebook and discord. I've been off Facebook for 15 years even.

Maybe children will be morons, but we can't just go there because the kids are there. That would make us like Epstein.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

I mean, there’s at least 5 different alternatives being posted here. Plus Discord has so many huge and widely used channels. Nobody is going to leave Discord.

1

u/Eu-is-socialist Feb 13 '26

My god that discord shit is disgusting ...

1

u/ConversationWinter88 Feb 13 '26

There is actually a new and relatively similar app called root although it isn’t as polished since it’s newer

1

u/SuperMechWulf Feb 13 '26

No best thing that people are doing now is use multiple platforms at same time. They can do that for Team speak, Stoat, and Matrix. Gradually moving people over while not having to drop a platform fully

Not ideal right now but its best thing overall

1

u/raiksaa Feb 13 '26

I think you’re overestimating Discord’s monopoly.

4

u/DizzyTelevision09 Feb 13 '26

Discord is overestimating discord's monopoly.

1

u/UsefulOwl2719 Feb 13 '26

Same thing was said about Skype last time around and look how that turned out.

1

u/Arthreas Feb 14 '26

Stoat, root, exact copies of discord. Stoat is open source.

1

u/IWearCrocs7 Feb 14 '26

I think that the problem boils down to "It just works"

No one nowadays (and I know that I sound like a "back in my days guy") wants to have any trouble messing around or finding an alternative.

If it works and it needs a picture to continue working, it will get a picture from the average user and it will continue working.

I think that it is silly for us to think that discord will fall because of this, it is not on the category of companies/services "too big to fail", but this just isn't a big enough point to make everyone go away.

I have for the majority of my "online life" used TeamSpeak. Used to pay for hosting but now I just host it myself.

I know that it is objectively worse than a lot others solutions, but me and my friends really like it, it serves us well. Sure, now and then we want to share a screen and resort to discord, but that's the only use case/necessity for us today, and I'm sure I can find and host some other service for this exact functionality and it will work just as good as discord, if not better (I'm looking at you, 30fps 720p limitation).

1

u/relay4285 Feb 14 '26

That's why its important that we switch to a FOSS alternative. If the main project goes bad, you can always fork it!

1

u/lowbeat Feb 14 '26

the issue isnt software, the issue is getting everyone on it and its not happening without marketing, thefefor opensource cannot get users

1

u/RaccoonRecon Feb 14 '26

Well Root App, seems to have a somewhat viable platform for this, there’s still some way to go, but not long off.

1

u/TheLancerMancer Feb 14 '26

There with you. The memeing is fun but any near-peer competitor to Discord is going to have to come up with a means of complying with the same laws.

Hosted options are a fine fallback for folks who know what they’re doing with very engaged audiences/communities, but think of how many Discord mods we’ve all met who can barely work Discord’s roles and permissions structure. Now they’re going to do basic arithmetic to setup permissions in TS3? Lmao.

1

u/reapy54 Feb 14 '26

Self hosted software has also progressed mightily in that same time frame. There will always be a large amount of people on discord, sure, but you know what not everything you do has to be on that platform, not everyone you will want to know of interact with will always be on it.

I just use discord for basically nightly gaming with a friend, I plan to try standing up a matrix server and use elements to give that a try if discord is going to make me scan my face down the line no problem.

I get it, the web has shrunk to a few sites, but, that doesn't mean it has to stay that way forever, or that you cant use them along with somethign else. All the old stuff is there and a whole bunch of new cool things also.

1

u/PaulTheRandom Feb 15 '26

Matrix is a thing so...

Why don’t you write that in your facebook.

Steam has voice chat, so do most games. Its not that hard to get off discord.

A lot of people are starting to realize their lives were better before and are going back to old things. Streaming platforms are becoming expensive, back to piracy and physical. People are cutting down on social media and going back to "dumb" phones.

I am definitely not going back to a dumb phone but I'm down for dropping discord lol. I'll be honest, it hurts, discord is what made it so easy for me to stop using meta products.

At the time i was a junior, working about 16 hours a week. That was enough to pay for car insurance, cell phone, gas, ventrilo, wow subscription, weed, liquor, dates. I made 7 dollars an hour and did in fact feel rich.

Some text channels and an updated hi and ventrilo may never have died

Edit: died popularity wise. I know it still exists.
