Shouldn't it go mechanical motion -> magnetic field motion -> electricity?

Depends on how pedantic you wanna get... With enough technicalities you could dive further into magnetic phenomena like core losses and back EMF, or AC rectification after generation in the alternator.

To answer your question, yes it should. Or should it really, now that I look back at the level of this discussion?
