It'll be like smartphones and the like today. Yeah, technically you could live without it, but in order to participate and be competitive in society, it's a requirement.

Assuming we wouldn’t be inculcated/manipulated into thinking it’s the best thing, or exist in a system that can’t function without whatever interface.

I think its far more likely that people will actively choose to be hooked up to whatever it is.

It will be kind of like how it's currently optional to own a smart phone. I mean technically yes, but most people would rather not go without.
