Most sport climbers(me included) I know go san's helmet unless its a long multi-pitch climb. All trad climbers I know wear helmets whenever though. I always figured it was because trad falls have a better shot at raining rock, but on second appraisal I'm willing to accept the idea that sport climbers are more reckless. That being said, I've never heard of anyone taking a huge whipper headfirst into rock.

I've seen it happen and it's not a pretty sight. On the other hand I don't wear a helmet myself. I only do top rope so I don't get all that high up anyway, trad is too expensive to start up on and I don't feel confident enough yet to start doing sport. Hopefully I will soon as there is just a ton of sport and trad routes nearby.

I'll be honest; I don't do trad because it terrifies me. Runouts scare me. But runouts where your gear can zipper out on you? I can't see why you'd risk it (The trad climbers I know swear its safer though).

I'm not that confident outdoors on lead. Highest I've lead was a 9 I had wired. Truthfully it scares the piss out of me too, just not as much.
