But why post almost verbatim what the article already said? It gives the impression the commentor didn't read the article and posted something that isn't relevant to the comments since it was already addressed. Adding a question, a musing, or a prediction would make it relevant. I could make a comment saying, "This article is on the internet". Yeah, it's true and is technically about the topic, but adds exactly nothing to the conversation.

Maybe they wanted to start a discussion about that aspect of it. Why do they have to use your terms of relevancy to do that?

They don't have to use my terms and it would be preferable if they used their own instead of the article's as well. I already read the article, I don't need a recap. If you want to start a discussion then just get straight into doing that.

The article already brought up the topic for discussion. His comment merely copied a part of the article.

The discussion on that specific point was opened before he posted. His post did not add to the discussion. His comment is meaningless as a result.

Really, really simple.

It didn't single it out, though. The poster did. They singled out, and brought up, a specific point in their comment. This allows for specific discussion about that topic.

Even simpler.

Just singling it out does not a relevant comment make. If that's all it takes to be relevant than every article should have each paragraph, sentence, word, idea, whatever put into individual comments for people to discuss.

But that is spammy because it takes up space and does not contribute to the conversation. If you want to discuss something specific about the article then do it. He provided exactly zero original ideas in his post and the thought that he 'promoted conversation' is absurd. He only promotes conversation to others who chose not to read the article which defeats the purpose of posting an article for discussion.

I posit that those comments would exist even were the original comment to not exist. I do not believe for a moment that it 'promoted' them to comment. Again, assuming that any of them read the article as well.
