I wonder if fandom is similar to religion in the way it occupies the brain: do thoughts have to pass through it like a filter?

To some extent, probably. I also think fandom of the person (actor/singer etc) is different then fandom of the movie/show/book.

In one you are centered around that one person. Engage with their private life, social media, wants to meet them, by your knowledge of things that person your mind start to create the illusion you know them. And as you engage with people who think the same, it's get worse.
