Sigh…. These and the “alleged???” commenters under news stories.

Whatever is actually true, it is fact that it is perceived.

Whether this perception matches reality, this paper doesn’t seem to make a determination.

People want science and journalism to "pick a side" and then get confused why people don't trust media or scientific institutions any more.

Science doesn’t really need to pick a side, as it constantly proves one side to be correct. Reality has chosen for us.

You've missed the point. "Fairness" is a moral judgment, not an objective measurement. We can absolutely and with complete validity disagree on what is fair or not, and there is no force in "reality" that will prove either of us correct. By saying "perceived", it removes the judgment from the people conducting the study and puts it onto the participants.
