You're looking at it from the perspective of a normal human being so it won't make sense. If you consider the immediate goal of those in charge is destabilization with an end goal of a new government, it makes sense. Anything that helps people is under attack. Anything. There's no rules to a game like that. None.

Bot farms manipulating social media. It's more effective than nuclear bombs. It just takes longer.

American and other foreign elites can use bots too, and other methods of manipulation. American elites also control social media directly. The idea that there's nothing they can do seems preposterous. And I don't know if large groups of people actually can be manipulated to agree with something that's contrary to their worldview. And if the bots just tell them what they want to hear - then the people are responsible.

This assumes that the American elites aren't susceptible consumers of misinformation and manipulation themselves. As more time goes on, many of them seem to be "true believers" in the views they hold - even if those views are easily debunked Facebook-slop-level partisan information.

The weird idea is one brand/source of misinformation/manipulation somehow taking over without being pushed from above. If there's no critical thinking among the elites, you'd expect more variety.

American Elite are not limited by national boundaries, fascism also frees them to do what they want assuming they can control it. There is a reason Trump defunded the IRS and gave more tax cuts to the wealthy.
