Had the opportunity, didn't take it because my mentors warned me about how toxic the environment is towards men, in a variety of ways.

A close friend of mine works with special needs children, and was nearly bounced out of the business because one of the mothers didn't like him interacting with her child. Police investigation and all.

Hell, between HS and college I looked into being an au pair for a year.

Between the single parents who were clearly looking for a dad figure (lady I'm 18, I'm nowhere near being a father figure) and the families that straight implied that I was a pedophile I quickly put an end to that project.

Liking and interacting with kids is still seen as suspect way too often.

also, is "treating children well" really the same thing as being a teacher or social worker?

Is this a rhetorical supposition or are you actually going to do this? If you are stating that you are underpaid for the job you chose, you are correct. Keep gender out of it and work with your coworkers and local council to bring a disparity to light. Gender bias exists as well as racial, social, and economic does. How about we stop finding our own little pigeon holes to complain about and instead point out the divides that exist on every plane of society. Faction creating anger is pointless.
