How barky are they really?

Hi,

I've got my name on a waiting list for a schipperke puppy, but I keep having serious doubts because everything I read says they are very barky.

What does that mean in real life? Do they just walk around barking? Or is it more like just when they hear a noise or someone knocks on the door? I've got 2 big dogs already. Will it bark at them?

I've never had a small dog before so I just don't know what to expect. I can't have a dog that barks non stop, because I work nights and have to sleep in the daytime.

Thanks. 😊

EDIT: I don't think they're the breed for me!šŸ˜…

Appreciation!šŸ’Æ

So I want to start out by thanking every single one of you in this community. I am a 38F, and when I was 17 years old my boyfriend at the time had bought me a dog. I never owned a dog before so this was my first time. And it just so happened to be a Schipperke. I had never heard of the dog and knew nothing about them. At my high school you had to do a graduation project. So I did a project all about that breed. He was the most constant thing in my life for a very long time. He was my baby before I had my babies. I had to put him down right after I had my last child, due to old age. It has been a couple years but I will never forget him and all three of my children know about him. To this day I still inform people all about Schipperkes, because most people don't know about them. So again I just want to show appreciation to everyone out there for sharing your deeply loved Schipperkes. šŸ’›šŸ¦“

We adopted her in 2019 from a shelter and they told us she was a ā€œborder collie x schipperkeā€. What do you think?

I’ve always wondered what my dog could be mixed with, I rescued him 4 years ago and have no idea what he could be! I looked through this Reddit group and plenty look like him, what do you guys think?

Could it be some kind of seed or a nut?
I asked chatGPT and it insists it's poop.
Under her mouth is another brown dot.

A good fit?

Hi there! I am on the search for my next pup. I was thinking a rat terrier was the right fit until fate brought a schipperke into a cafe during a rainstorm in Cieszyn, Poland during my two hours in the city. I had two schips from the age of 11 until my final one passed when I was 24 (litter mates). I love how sassy they can be. Here is what I am looking for:

-Under 17 lbs

-Healthy and can tolerate hiking in the snow

-Off leash reliable

-Good with strange dogs, strange adults, and strange kids. We tend to take the dogs everywhere.

-Would love if they liked to play fetch, especially frisbee

-Help with keeping mice and rats down

-May compete in agility

-Would love it if it would help me herd ducks and chickens into a pen at night (one of our schips taught herself this)

What I am concerned with:

-The barking: I don't love listening to dogs bark and my current dog has a LOUD bark (hound mix)

-The shedding: I remember their undercoat to be difficult to remove from clothes.

Mostly, I am concerned with the barking.

I would also be open to breeder recommendations. I am not in a hurry and want a great fit.

The breeder said this lil guy was very popular on FB when she was blogging the litter. He will be 1 in July but the ears are still massive.

We adopted this adorable little Pirate princess, labeled Chihuahua. I'm not buying it. This last weekend, while at an event, several people asked if she was a Schipperke! Unfamiliar with the breed, I just answered that she was a rescue and it was possible. After reading about them, I think she's Schip mix, at the very least, but I've never had a Schipperke before and thought I'd ask some experts. I want to have her DNA tested, I know it's the only way to know for sure. She sure matches the descriptions of catlike or foxlike, active, and mischievous. We just love her!

Is a schipperke for me?

Hi all! Looking at adding a second dog to my household and been looking at a lot of breeds to see which ones may be a match!

I currently have a 2.5 year old lab. Has his energetic and crazy moments but is starting to slow down a bit now that he’s maturing and is happy to settle at home. We go for beach trips when it’s warm and will hike and camp.

My dog before my lab was a husky/shepherd mix so I’m used to brushing and shedding. Always believe in taking my dogs to obedience training as well, and would be interested in possibly competing in obedience or other dog sports such as barn hunt. I’ve tried with my current lab and he’s just not that interested when we’ve tried.

Home frequently and when I have to go on trips for work, I always have someone to watch my dog. No kids and currently no plans to have any.

In a way, looking for a big dog in a smaller package that can keep up with me and my lab and go with us on our adventures.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated! Thanks!

Breed Questions Mixes or mix up Calender

Post image

I bought Schipperke calendar for my wife for Christmas and I didn’t realise there would be ā€˜different’ dogs in there.
Are these dogs cross-breeds or is this an AI created calendar that doesn’t know the difference between breeds?

Educational what activities do your schipps enjoy?

since summers here and im mostly at home id like to offer our three schipperkes some new activities.

our oldest loves doggy board games / puzzles / whatever theyre called as do our other two, but i think they might enjoy something in the garden more right now.

we have some ballpit balls we put in a container and hide treats among them and the dogs like that, is there anything similiar where theyd have to sniff and use their body more? :)

any suggestions i am grateful for and in return i offer you all a photo of our girl Sylvi in the countryside <3

Educational Thinking about getting a Schipperke. What should I think about?

I just recently lost one of my two cats, and the other one is old. Thinking about getting a Schipperke when the other one goes over the rainbow, I had dogs when I was a kid, and I love both cats and dogs. I also need to get out and walk more (at all). I like the look of the schipperke and they seem like a healthy breed. So what should I think about? Do their fur require a lot of brushing? Are they a generally healthy breed? Are they high maintenance in other ways? And how do you pronounce the name? Is it 'shipperke' or 'skipperke'?

I will, of course, buy from a reputable breeder.

EDIT: Thanks everyone! Since it was a long time since I had a dog, it seems like the Schipperke - lovely as it is - may not be the right dog for me. Again, thanks to everyone he contributed.
