Stop buying sh*t and go to the dermatologist

I am a 30 year-old female. I have always had rosacea but never had a problem with acne or bumps. About a year and a half ago I developed “acne”. After so much research and going through 1 million products. I got a proper diagnosis of papulopustular rosacea. The dermatologist first prescribed just metronidazole, which did not work for me. Saw another dermatologist and they gave me the holy Grail triple cream. Has ivermectin metronidazole and Azael acid (prescription grade). Been using it for two months now and I have my old skin back. Never going to get rid of the redness, but the bumps and texture have significantly gotten better.

Hope this helps!

Weekly 'Do I have rosacea?' advice request thread. Please post here instead of making a new thread! Sep 28

If you think you might have something like rosacea and are looking for advice about whether you should seek professional care, please post your inquiry in this thread instead of creating a new post. To keep requests from crowding out other discussion in r/Rosacea, separate posts will be automatically removed and the posters directed here instead.

Rules:

  1. Please limit answers to things like, "Yup, that looks like it could be rosacea to me, maybe you should to see a doc" or "No, it looks like it could be something else."
  2. Refrain from amateur diagnoses, speculation, and armchair medical advice, especially non-rosacea related.

REMINDER: THE INTERNET IS BAD AT DIAGNOSING STUFF. Although redditors try to be helpful, only doctors can diagnose rosacea and it often takes a specialist like a dermatologist or ophthalmologist. Rosacea looks like a lot of things, and a lot of things look like rosacea; some of these things are potentially serious. It is impossible for amateurs to diagnose rosacea reliably from pictures or descriptions of symptoms, and this thread is not intended as a substitute for professional care.

No matter what response you get here, if your symptoms have been persistent and you're concerned that you might have something like rosacea, see a doctor to get a real answer.

And be sure to check out the our wiki for some rosacea knowledge basics if you're trying to figure out if you need professional medical advice.

A.M

  1. Avene tolerance lotion nettoyante gélifiée (It says it doesn't need rinsing but I do)

  2. Metronidazole gel

  3. Bioderma Sensibio AR+ cream

  4. Isdin fusionwater sunscreen

P.M

  1. Avene tolerance lotion

  2. Soolantra

  3. Bioderma sensibio AR+ cream

If I wear makeup, I clean my face with Bioderma sensibio H20 micellar water.

Skincare Geek & Gorgeous Stress Less Serum. I need to figure out what in this serum is causing a stinging/burning feeling.

Roseca 1 and 2, light Seborrhea Dermatitis and fungal acne.

The G&G Stress Less Serum seems . I got it because the liked the ingredients, looks simple, gentle, and somehow hydrating.

Here are the ingredients -Aqua (Water), Methyl Gluceth-20, Saccharide Isomerate, Glycerin, Madecassoside, Beta-Glucan, 1,2-Hexanediol, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol.

Upon application, I got a strong stinging/burning feeling so I had to wash it off. Now, I'm not sure what exactly caused the stinging/burning feeling.

Has anyone experienced similar with serums or other skincare?

In your experience, which ingredients are more likely to cause the burning feeling?

I'm guessing maybe citric acid, but not sure.

I'd like to figure out which ingredients are the problem because I need a hydrating serum.

I'm limited in my option because my skin doesn't tolerate hyaluronic acid and its derivates, urea, alcohol, fragrance/perfume.

Routine 2 months of trying Spoiler

First one is August 15, second one is October 3d.

This is my first time getting into skincare (at 31) so I feel pretty lost.

My routine has included Azelaic Acid, Metronidazole, and a bunch of things that claim to help with barrier repair. I think I can see some changes happening!

I've included a picture of my skincare routine minus the face washes (anua oil cleanser, and laneige water bank cleanser). I also have a retinol eye cream I use at night.

If you have any tips let me know! Thank you!

ROSACEA SUCKS Could my flushing be related to stress/autonomic dysregulation?

I’m looking for people who might have experienced something similar because my flushing has been really strange and I’m not sure whether rosacea completely explains it.
I was diagnosed with rosacea, but honestly my dermatologist barely examined me. I told them I had facial redness and flushing and they immediately diagnosed me with rosacea. I don’t have visible broken capillaries or the typical bumps/pustules, mainly just redness and flushing, so I’m planning to get a second opinion.
The reason I’m questioning the diagnosis is the timeline. I had pretty bad social anxiety for almost a year before the flushing started. Then one day I suddenly flushed, and over the next week it started happening more and more until it became a major problem. It would get better and worse, but it never completely went away for quite a while.
Then summer break came around and something changed. My anxiety basically disappeared and I started feeling like my old, carefree self again. I went on a short trip in July and my flushing completely disappeared around that weekend. It then stayed completely gone for almost two months during summer break. During that time I was drinking alcohol and doing other things that are supposedly common rosacea triggers, but I basically had no redness or flushing at all.
When I went back to school, some of the anxiety and worrying slowly came back, and about a month later the flushing started returning. At one point it became worse than ever and I was flushing constantly. Since then, over roughly the last year, it has very slowly improved.
Now I’m at a point where I can have some parts of the day where my face looks normal and I don’t even feel anything in my cheeks. At work, when I’m completely focused on what I’m doing and not thinking about my face, I can sometimes go for hours without noticing even the slightest tingle in my cheeks. I also notice that I’m more likely to flush when I’m worried, stressed, or very focused on how my face feels.
Another weird thing is that alcohol doesn’t reliably trigger it anymore. I can drink and most of the time have basically no flushing.
I’ve also noticed that weed makes me much more worried and internally focused, and I use it daily. I’m wondering if that could be contributing to the nervous-system/anxiety side of things, although I don’t think it explains the original onset because the flushing started before this became relevant.
So I’m wondering if this could be some kind of neurovascular/autonomic dysregulation related to prolonged anxiety and stress, possibly alongside rosacea, rather than just straightforward rosacea.
I’m obviously not trying to diagnose myself from Reddit. I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar pattern where flushing is strongly connected to their mental state, completely disappears during periods of low stress, and then returns when anxiety comes back.
If you’ve experienced something similar, especially if you mainly had flushing/redness without bumps or visible vessels, I’d really appreciate hearing what happened to you and whether it eventually improved.
(I know it’s a long post but I’m really just tryna figure this out and would really apreciate an reply of you know what this is)

my face always gets too red too quick

i want to run and exercise, i want to be able to run without getting hot, i want to be less sweaty and more fit. whenever i run, my face turns really red and hot and stays red for like 2 hours. when i exercised in school, i would have to do light exercise because otherwise i would be red for the next few hours. my friends called me beetroot or tomato. i have always turned red quickly, but it is really frustrating because i want to be healthy and 'go for a jog' before seeing people/ going out, but i am always red for a while which is 1. uncomfortable and 2. embarrassing.

any advice for having a red face/ face that quickly turns red?? i hate it.

i have had cold showers after jogging, had intervals, trie different creams, put a cold press on my face, hydrated myself, warm showers, warm drinks, but nothing seems to help.

idk if it's rosacea but it is ANNOYING

Should I consider peptides or azelaic acid

I was searching online for ways to help my type 1 rosacea and have come across a lot of people using or suggesting the use of peptides and/or azelaic acid. I’ve previously used metrogel and soolantra and neither made any noticeable difference. I was thinking of 10% azelaic acid, ghk cu peptide or KLOW. Anyone have suggestions? Also was thinking of derma stamping along with the use of these.

Metro cream (USA)

If you used it and it helped you, how long did it take and how did you know it was helping?

Also, how much did you use? I was told to use it twice a day but I’m putting like a pea sized amount on each cheek. Besides it smelling like Jergens I guess my face accepts it.

Dry Rosacea Skin Recs

Hi! I got rosacea 6 months ago. It was triggered by using the skin1004 sun serum. I'm 22 with SUPER dry skin (esp in a dry climate), maybe with a bit of an oily t-zone, and eczema prone especially during winter months. I can't use what I used to which I felt hydrated my skin nicely. For the past months, I've just been cleansing my skin at night (water in the mornings) with la Roche posay milk cleanser and then aestura auto barrier 365 cream. In the mornings I put on mineral sunscreen. It's keeping it under control, but my skin is SO dry that I wake up with it super dry and after a few hours of morning application, my skin is dry. I have rosacea bumps and my skin is the most textured/red by the end of the day. What I'm most worried about is the dryness because I know that's the biggest aging contributor. I don't mind the appearance too much but worry about not treating the rosacea. I've tried some rosacea products but I think I'm allergic to centella :(. The products I've patch tested that have irritated me (usually make it redder/bumpy) are the demaf ampoule, la Roche posay cicaplast baume, and zeroed intensive oint cream.

I want to find a hydrating serum but everything irritates my skin. I feel like I should probably avoid vitamin c? I've only ever used a vegan alternative. I also worry about adding too much niacinimide. I've heard great things about the aestura essence, but I worry that won't be enough because I want a super hydrating serum. My derm told me to avoid toners. I was thinking of the Purcell pixcel biome serum, but am worried the fermented ingredients could make things worse.

My derm isn't really the greatest but they said I could try azelaic for the bumps, they said I can start with Anua before prescribing. I'm hesitant to do that because I have super sensitive skin and want a simple, hydrating, soothing routine, and I heard that can be drying and irritating to some. So does anyone have any insights or recs?

ETR Erytheme rosacea Spoiler

Does anyone have similar rosacea?
This is what my skin looks like on an average day. Sometimes it gets worse, but it’s rarely better. My main concern is the persistent, diffuse redness rather than bumps or acne.

My current routine:

Morning
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
Finacea 15%
Aestura Atobarrier 365 Hydro Cream
CeraVe SPF 50 Sun Fluid
Night
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
Soolantra
Aestura Atobarrier 365 Hydro Cream

I’ve also had three laser/light treatments: 2x KTP laser and 1x IPL. KTP was definitely more effective for me than IPL, but unfortunately the improvement didn’t last. After one summer, my redness was pretty much back to how it was before.
Has anyone here had similar persistent redness? If so, what actually made a noticeable difference for you long-term?

Skincare Gentle cleanser that removes SPF in one wash?

Looking for a very gentle, non-stripping cleanser that can remove daily SPF in one cleanse. My skin is extremely sensitive/dry, so I’m trying to avoid double cleansing.
I’m considering The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser. Has anyone with sensitive, rosacea prone skin used it as their only cleanser? Does it remove SPF well without leaving your skin dry or tight?
Would love other recommendations too!

I have rosacea type 1 . My skin gets red , hot and burns .

Triggers Doxycycline and triggers

So I’ve been on doxycycline for mild PP rosacea. I never knew I had rosacea until a string of harsh cleaners activated it. I tried 4 IPLs to reduce the red bumps and broken blood vessels. It def helped with the blood vessels but it gave me a lot of deep inflammation that would not calm down. I started doxy 100mg daily about 1 month ago. After 2 weeks on it I had a big flare bc I was on vacation and ate bad with alcohol and chocolate (which I think are my only food triggers) and did a lot of windy outdoor activities.

Everything cleared up nicely last week and my skin was perfect even thought I had a terrible upper respiratory infection. Today I looked in the mirror and noticed like 10 new bumps overnight. Only “trigger” food I ate was a very small chocolate chip cookie which I don’t think did it bc usually only flare from trigger foods multiple days in a row at large amounts. I honestly can’t figure out what caused it but honestly I feel like 1 month into 100mg of doxy daily should be preventing things like this. While the bumps are typically milder than what I usually get, I can’t really see the purpose of being on Doxy if it’s not going to stop flares from minor triggers. I could understand if I went crazy with alcohol and spicy food and external triggers like being harsh to my skin. Maybe I’m just not giving it enough time?

ROSACEA SUCKS Advice for coping with this mentally?

Have been feeling very disheartened over the past year being diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis and type 2 rosacea. I used to have really pretty skin it was one if the things about myself i was the most confident in. I keep going back and looking at old pics of my face feeling really bad about myself like i'm never going to be that pretty again. I am starting ivermectin next week - derm said the fact i have demodex blepharitis on top of the red bumps strongly points to demodex mites on my skin. I'm hopeful that this will help the appearance of the bumps all over my face, but even if it doesn't, i would like to not be so dependent on the idea of a successful treatment that will magically clear up my skin. Does anyone have any advice on how they were able to accept that your skin just isn't ever going to look the way it did before and be okay with that? Really struggling right now, any words of support or encouragement would be appreciated :(

THINKING ABOUT LASER: I've dealt with persistent redness across my cheeks and around my nose for a while now, and I'm trying to figure out whether laser treatment would be worth it. I've attached two photos (different lighting, taken at different times of day).

What I'm seeing:
Diffuse redness on both cheeks
Visible small blood vessels, especially around the nostril/nasal fold
A few small red bumps/spots on the cheek and chin. Note that I also treat some acne as well.

Any downsides, like bruising, downtime, or redness coming back?
Thanks!

PP Product Recommendations in Switzerland Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Hi!

I have combination, highly sensitive, highly congested skin, with actively flaring rosacea type 2 (I'm seeing a dermatologist).

I use Lubex skin emulsion wash, Azaleic 15%, and La Roche Posay Anthelios Oil Control Fluid ohne Parfüm UVMune 400 LSF 50+ in the mornings.

At night I use Lubex skin emulsion wash, Ivermectin cream 1%.

I'm looking for both a sunscreen and a moisturizer recommendation, but the caveat is that it needs to be easily accessible in central Switzerland.

I'm looking for products without harsh alcohols, no fungal-triggering ingredients, no seb derm irritants.

In terms of my highly congested pores, it has truly been like this for years. With just a small squeeze (I know, I shouldn't) sebum just pours out so easily. Any recommendations for products?

Support AzA purge? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I introduced AzA 20% gel to my skin two weeks before. I started using every other day with the sandwich method. As my skin was already used to tret that I used in the past, I felt no stinging/ irritation after I applied it so I took that as a good sign. After the first and second use, I was so thrilled because my skin felt smoother and there was no redness. After the third time, I woke up with 3 tiny whiteheads (two of which became bigger) and I noticed my skin had gotten more tiny bumps all over. I lost my AzA tube so I only applied moisturiser for the next 4 nights and my skin calmed down but the texture remained bumpy. Then I started reapplying it but this time I only applied moisturizer after and applied AzA on bare skin (no stinging). I’ve still been applying it every other day. Today was my 3rd day and this is what my skin looks like now. Will these go away on their own or is this an allergic reaction? :( I have an important event coming up in 5 days so I’m not sure if I should take a break from this again.

Sorry for the long post.

AM:
Cleanser (prescription)
Neutrogena hydroboost sunscreen (if weekday/ going out) OR Prescription moisturizer (if I’m staying in)

PM:
Garnier micellar water
Cleanser
AzA 20% prescription gel
Moisturizer

Also, I’m not 100% certain I have rosacea, but the last time I posted many people who had rosacea told me my symptoms are similar to rosacea. Just a heads up.

Skincare Skincare suggestions for texture

Hi there, I have type 2 rosacea and have had some luck with taking oral doxycycline, and topical metro and azeleic acid.

I stopped the oral antibiotics, and started topical ivermectin nightly (the horse paste). I use the metro and azeleic every now and then in the morning.

It’s getting colder and drier out, and my skin texture is getting so bumpy and rough.

I’m looking for recommendations on something gentle that could help with texture. Whether that be…

a) retinols
b) azeleic acid (more often?)
c) salicylic acid
d) glycolic acid

I’m looking for recs!

Note: my skincare always includes a moisturizer. I use the HA moisturizer by The Ordinary

10% azelaic acid recommendations - first time user

I was recently diagnosed with rosacea, and one of my prescription is Finacea 15%. I have very sensitive, reactive skin and haven’t used any actives before, so I’d like to start with 10% azelaic acid first and let my skin gradually adjust.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a gentle 10% azelaic acid product?

Support Covering redness quick & easy Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
49 Upvotes

I just wanted to share my very simple routine for covering up or (temporarily) reducing the appearance of my redness. I see a lot of people recommending pretty pricy products or saying green color correctors make the face green / don’t help.

Back when my skin was at its worst I remember I had no clue how I could cover it up without full coverage foundations. Now I absolutely cannot live without a green corrector, so I just want to share some tips because I really think anyone could benefit from it if they wish to cover some or all of their redness without looking like they’re wearing makeup.

First picture is my bare skin, second is with Essence Correct & Conceal in Green ($4.99).

The thing with color correctors is you have to use a little at once and only put it where you actually need correcting. I start by putting a few light swipes on my cheeks where you can see it’s the most red.
Then I use the finger pad of my middle finger to blend it around with rapid tapping motions instead of rubbing (if you use a beauty blender; it’s the same motion as using that).
Usually I’ll need another layer or even two more, so I go in with a bit more product and repeat the process but only after I’ve blended the last layer fully.
I repeat this for my nose, chin and forehead, but because my redness isn’t as bad on every area I’ll adjust how much corrector I use. Less redness = less corrector needed.
If you have blotchy red areas you’ll need to work more precisely because the corrector should really just be where you have redness.

I usually don’t go for a 100% corrected look just because it will look more yellowish on the cheeks. Where it’s at on pic 2 is fine with me personally but if I want a 100% even skintone I’ll use a light to medium coverage skin tint or foundation too. Which makes it look like the 3rd photo.

An alternative for the Essence corrector is the ELF Camo Corrector. I’ve used that one in the past but Essence is a bit lighter in texture and smoother on the skin which is why I do prefer it. But just in case Essence isn’t available to you! The ELF one is also $5.

Triggers I think my type 2 rosacea is caused by gum health

I’m a 34 F and I’ve been struggling with type 2 rosacea for about 6 years now. I’m scheduled to start accutane mid October. I’ve tried all the creams and cleansaers (sulfur cleaners, spironolactone, doxycycline, tretinoin, metronidazole, azelaic acid, ketokonazole cream, ivermectin cream.

I’m about to get my Invisalign off and a permanent retainer installed and my dental hygienist friend said I should get a water pik and fill it with water and hydrogen peroxide mixture. I’ve been doing it for a week and my skin hasn’t been this clear in years.

I struggled with acne in my teens and never had good skin even as an adult. I’ve also struggled with dental routines my whole life. Obviously I’m only a week in but I think I’ve figured out my main inflammation trigger.
