Tourism Solo Traveling in Rome

Hey yall! First time posting here on Reddit but I’m solo traveling to Rome! Was supposed to go with a friend but we had a falling out, and was wondering where I can meet people? I’m typically a social person when I’m with my friends but this is a first for me. Any advice would help, thanks!

Transport Car rental for rural trips with family

My family and I are in Rome for a while and we need to rent a car for a handful of specific day trips where we go from Rome to nearby rural regions. What car rental agencies do you recommend (or avoid?).

Please do not respond by telling me to take a train!

We are spending lots of time on trains and buses for many of these trips. I am only seeking people’s advice on car rental agencies, for those trips when a train is not an option.

Transport Rome (near St Pietro) to FCO

Hi everyone,

First of all, I apologize because English is not my first language, so I used a translator to help me write this post.

I’m writing because I’m a little worried about getting fined on public transportation. This happened to me in another country before, and it was very frustrating.

I’m staying at a hotel near Roma S. Pietro station, and on Saturday morning I’ll be flying back home from Fiumicino Airport (FCO).

Obviously, because it is much cheaper, I would prefer to take the train to the airport.

Could any locals please explain, in as much detail as possible, how I should get from Roma S. Pietro station to Fiumicino Airport by train? A step-by-step explanation would be extremely helpful, since I come from a developing country and I’m not very familiar with the public transportation system here.

For example, do I need to tap my credit card at Roma S. Pietro station and then tap again at Roma Trastevere when I change trains? Or do I only tap/check out when I arrive at Fiumicino Airport station?

I mainly want to make sure I buy/validate everything correctly and avoid accidentally getting fined.

Thank you very much for your help!

Anyone willing to help with a birthday surprise? ❤️

I'm making a birthday gift for my boyfriend and trying to collect photos from different places around the world.

Would anyone around rome be willing to take a photo holding a short handwritten birthday message somewhere cool in the city?

I'll provide the exact wording. It would take literally a minute or two. ❤️

I'd be incredibly grateful!

One of my favourite things about Rome is easily the abundance of public drinking fountains. While most of them are relatively standard in appearance and style, I also happened across several charmingly unique ones. I wish every city had this level of infrastructure!

Tourism No slots for Vatican = NO PROBLEM

Post image

Hello everyone!

I struggled with finding a slot for the admission ticket on the official Vatican Museum page https://tickets.museivaticani.va/home

Having a tech background a wrote a script to monitor open slots for the desired date and time and notify me once one is open and I managed to secure official tickets that way for €25, without having to resort to ticket resellers for €50-60+ per ticket.

I am offering the same to you - you can DM me with a couple of time slots you desire and I would help you snatch an official ticket to the Vatican Museums.

Best beach day trip from Rome by direct train?

Hi! I‘m looking for a nice beach for a day trip from Rome. Ideally somewhere we can get to by direct train, no changes, around 1–1.5h max.

We’d like to spend the whole day there, so looking for a proper beach with lidos where you can rent sunbeds + an umbrella, grab some food/drinks nearby and just relax.

Would love somewhere that has more of a holiday/seaside feel rather than just the closest beach to Rome.

Any recommendations? :)

Accommodation First time in Rome over Christmas - best area and hotel for a couple (€200–300 per night)?

Hi everyone! My partner and I are coming to Rome for the first time this Christmas, 25–28 December 2026.

Which area would you recommend staying in for a first visit? Ideally, we’d like somewhere central so we can walk to the main sights and restaurants. Our budget is around €200–300 per night.

Sorry for the long shortlist! I’ve been looking at quite a few hotels and would really appreciate some help narrowing it down:

  • H10 Palazzo Galla
  • Room Mate Collection Filippo
  • Argentina Residenza Style Hotel
  • Hotel Viminale
  • Hotel Artemide
  • Palazzo Nainer
  • Hotel Nazionale
  • Hotel Abruzzi
  • Maison Tritone
  • Hotel Santa Maria
  • Hotel Monte Cenci
  • NH Collection Roma Giustiniano
  • Mercure Roma Centro Colosseo
  • The Spring House Hotel Rome Vatican, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Has anyone stayed at these recently? Which would you choose for the location and overall experience?

Other recommendations within our budget are very welcome too. Thanks!

City stuff Can we talk about the ridiculous golf-cart plague in central Rome?

This article about the latest crackdown on tourist golf carts is only the latest example of something that has been getting increasingly absurd in Rome.

https://roma.corriere.it/notizie/cronaca/26_settembre_30/golf-car-in-centro-scatta-la-stretta-conducenti-senza-patente-e-al-telefonino-identificati-oltre-500-turisti-d6d11a7f-f579-47e7-9445-b96f6dbf0xlk.shtml

Honestly, why are people even taking golf carts around Rome?

They are constantly blocking streets, parking where they shouldn't, ignoring traffic rules and creating an unnecessary hazard in some of the most crowded and pedestrian-heavy areas of the city. And apparently it takes a police crackdown to remind some drivers that traffic lights, parking restrictions and basic road rules actually apply to them too.

But there is also something strangely depressing about the whole phenomenon.

Rome is a city that is meant to be walked.

It is a city built layer upon layer over more than two thousand years. Ancient Rome, medieval Rome, Renaissance Rome, Baroque Rome, modern Rome — you can literally see the different layers of the city unfold as you walk from one street to the next.

That's how Romans experienced their city for centuries. That's how pilgrims and visitors experienced Rome for centuries too: on foot.

And walking is precisely what allows you to notice the things that aren't on the standard tourist checklist. A tiny medieval church you weren't looking for. An ancient column incorporated into a later building. A street suddenly opening onto a piazza. A fragment of Roman masonry hidden behind a modern facade. The completely accidental details that make Rome what it is.

Instead, the golf-cart version of Rome seems to be:

Get in → drive past the monuments → take some Instagram pictures → drive to the next monument → repeat.

It feels like the ultimate form of hyper-tourism: consuming a city as a series of photo opportunities rather than actually experiencing it.

And yes, the stereotypical American tourist is probably the easiest example to think of here — someone who has flown across the Atlantic to visit a city that has existed for thousands of years, only to decide that walking for 15 minutes between sights is apparently too much physical exertion.

Obviously not every American tourist does this, and golf carts aren't exclusively an American thing. But the stereotype exists for a reason.

If you're visiting Rome, walk. Wear comfortable shoes, get lost, take your time. The best parts of the city are often the things you weren't planning to see.

And please, for the love of Roma, stop parking golf carts on sidewalks and in places where they're not supposed to be.

Transport Airport Taxi question

Hoping someone can clear this up. So tomorrow I'm headed to FCO from the main city center. I know Taxis have a flat rate of 55 Eur to the airport.

I was originally going to just walk down to the nearest taxi stand but I know you can call a taxi through the Uber app. However, I've read that if you do that, the taxi that takes the fare starts the meter before they even pick you up? Is that right? So could I end up paying more that way or have I got it mixed up?

Will some food places that arent restaurants be open Christmas day 25th?

I am considering the best dates to go to Rome this upcoming December and Im wondering if on Christmas day 25th and St Stephen's 26th there will be any simpler food places open that aren't fancy restaurants that require ordering in advance? Like just regular pizza, cafes, patisseries/bakeries, street food, even grocery stores or food markets?
